Developmental Implications Of Palmar Dermatoglyphics Among Highland And Lowland Peruvian Quechua, Kenneth R. Parham

This study presents a comparison of quantitative palmar dermatoglyphic characters among highland and lowland Peruvian Quechua. These data are interpreted in light of an environmental hypothesis suggesting that hypoxia at high altitude affects the development of the fetus during the first trimester of gestation when dermal ridges are formed.

The highland population is from the village of Ondores in the Province and Department of Junin, and the lowland population, the only known Quechua-speakers from the tropics east of the Andes, is from the village of Pamashto in the Province of Lamas and the Department of San Martin. Mississippian Architecture: Temporal, Technological, And Spatial Patterning Of Structures At The Toqua Site (40m R6), Richard R. Polhemus

The description and analysis of 130 Native American structures from the Toqua site (40MR6) provide an architectural typology for determining age, form, and function of Mississippian and historic Cherokee structural remains in East Tennessee. The Toqua structure, ranging in age from circa A.D. 1200 to circa A.D. 1780, are examined for temporal, technological, and spatial patterning and are compared with 469 structures from 58 Mississippian archaeological sites in the interior Southeastern United States.

Turner Syndrome Dermatoglyphics: A Principal Components Analysis, Maxine J. Miller

This thesis investigates the general hypothesis that developmental stress resulting from monosomy of the X chromosome will result in changes in the dermal ridge system of the fingers and palms. The specific hypotheses proposed are that when contrasting Turner syndrome females to controls of both sexes the results will be that Turners will exhibit increased total variance in ridge counts, increased directional asymmetry, changes in growth gradients, and deviations in lateralization.

The Archaeology Of Rockshelters On Fountain Creek, Maury County, Tennessee, Robert F. Entorf

The purpose of this study is to describe and compare 11 archaeological assemblages recovered from six rockshelters located along Fountain Creek, a major tributary of the Duck River in Middle Tennessee. A theoretical model of forager and hunter-gatherer subsistence-settlement organization provide a framework for the evaluation of the rockshelter assemblages. The analytical and comparative procedures indicate that (1) there are significant differences in the content of contemporaneous assemblages, and (2) there is a significant increase in assemblage variability and breadth of activities represented at the rockshelters through time. During the winter of 1983, archaeological testing took place at the John King and Cedar Bluff sites on the Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base, Camden County, Georgia. One by two meter units were placed evenly across the area which the site survey had identified as containing representative artifacts from the Late Archaic through early historic settlement. This thesis details the results of this investigation.

This publication is primarily the compiled results of surveys sent to the cities in Tennessee. Electric rate information was supplied by the Tennessee Valley Authority and population figures were taken from the 1985 Certified Population of Tennessee Incorporated Municipalities. Approximately, one-hundred and thirty cities responded in part or whole to the survey. If data from a city appears in one section but not another it indicates the city either does not provide that service or information was not included in the survey response for some other reason. A Search For Systematic Variability In Inter-Finger Ridge Count Variation Among European Groups, Kenneth Melvin Binkley

Inter-finger ridge count variability has been shown to discriminate among major racial groups. However, little has been accomplished in the way of demonstrating patterned dispersion of inter-finger ridge count variability among groups of a major population. Here, multivariate techniques are used in a series of discovery procedures to search for systematic variability of finger ridge count contrasts among 48 male and 47 female European groups. Among-group biological variability of each sex is defined by principal components analysis, using the finger ridge count means of each group and a pooled within-group, within-sex covariance matrix having 5,474 degrees of freedom. The Role Of Rockshelter Sites In Prehistoric Settlement Systems: An Example From Middle Tennessee, Charles L. Hall

It is commonly assumed by researchers that rockshelter sites functioned as limited activity sites in prehistoric settlement systems. A test of this assumption is presented which involves a rockshelter site in Middle Tennessee (Tom's Rockshelter, 40MU430). A dynamic model of settlement diversification grounded in population growth is used to derive the expectation that the character of rockshelter occupations in general became increasingly specialized through time. It is argued that an implication of this increasing specialization would be a decrease in the diversity of the material assemblages characterizing progressively later rockshelter occupations. The Allometry Of The Palate Of Archaic Homo Sapiens And Modern Homo Sapiens, Steven R. Leigh

This research examines several aspects of allometry in the palate of archaic Homo sapiens and modern Homo sapiens. The allometry of the modern human palate is described. Comparisons between quantitative methods and comparisons between different types of samples are undertaken. Additionally, the allometry of the archaic Homo sapiens palate is described and analyzed. Finally, allometric comparisons between these groups are made.

The samples employed in this study consist of 132 Amerindian (Arikara) crania and 21 archaic Homo sapiens (primarily Neandertal) crania. Quantitative methods used for analyzing these groups include least-squares regression, reduced major axis regression, and principal components analysis. …

The following investigation centers upon an attempt to examine the problem of anterior dental reduction during the bio-cultural transition from archaic (Neandertals) to fully modern human forms. By focusing on the nature of dental root variability in the permanent maxillary anterior teeth (I¹-C^-), an endeavor is made to explore the absolute and relative tooth size differences characterizing the comparative samples. The samples selected for study were a collection of individual anterior teeth from an Upper Pleistocene cave deposit (Krapina, Yugoslavia) and a Plains Indian Arikara population (Larson site, South Dakota).
