A Cohort-Based Program To Help Students Prepare A Conference Research Presentation, Alanna Lecher
Florida Statewide Symposium: Best Practices in Undergraduate Research
Students move through many first time experiences when navigating their undergraduate and graduate education. Such experiences include the first time students submit an article to a peer-reviewed scientific journal, attend a conference, and conduct fieldwork. The cohort model has been shown to be effective in increasing success in undergraduate education, and it can be adapted to helping students succeed in these novel experiences as well. This presentation will explore one program where the cohort model was implemented to aid undergraduate students preparing their first conference presentation on a scientific research project. Program structure and implementation will be described.

Serial Murder Mysteries: Revisiting Definitional Issues, Data Challenges, Archaic Theories, And Myths Using Empirical Evidence, Jolene Vincent
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
While serial killings have been the focus of much scholarly research, the definition of what it means to be a serial killer has been debated by law enforcement agencies and academics for decades. This overall lack of understanding about serial killers and the murders they commit has contributed to the numerous limitations concerning the general knowledge about this unique form of homicide. Furthermore, serial killers have typically been examined using psychological models, psychiatric approaches, or the external drives/motives of the offenders, while the development of a sociological perspective has received less attention. This current research uses arguably the most complete …

Media Literacy: How the Era of Fake News Affects Public Service
In the U.S., the media plays a pivotal role in the spreading of information. However, the nonprofit sector appears to have a complicated relationship with the media. The media is a strong source of marketing and spreading the message, mission, and vision of the nonprofit, and is a way to keep connected with stakeholders. However, the nonprofit sector use of the media seems more susceptible to the effects of “fake news”. In this section, the history of nonprofit organizations along with its relationship with the media and fake news will be discussed. In addition, strategies to combat the problem or …

Click, Clack, Moo Marxism: Recognizing Theoretical Frameworks, Lana Williams
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
The challenge of engaging students in disciplinary theory has always been somewhat daunting for most professors. The introduction of theoretical concepts from primary readings is fundamental in this endeavor, but how do we get students to engage with the materials in a more critical and, in some instances, timely fashion? Critical literacy should go beyond primary literature and also be about questioning practices that keep particular structures of knowing, believing, and being in place. In practice, this can be accomplished through building critical literacy skills by recognizing theoretical frameworks in non-traditional contexts. The assignment provided here outlines one way in …
