Adaptive Foresight In The Creative Content Industries: Anticipating Value Chain Transformations And Need For Policy Action, Fabienne Abadie, Michael Friedewald, Matthias Weber

Michael Friedewald

This paper discusses the approach adopted to carry out a techno-economic foresight on the creative content industries, within the European Perspectives on the Information Society project. The novelty of the methodology lies in the mix of tools used, the embedding in an adaptive foresight framework and the implementation of a real-time Delphi which lead to interesting methodological lessons. The project succeeded in defining scenarios for the creative content industries, offering distinct trajectories and raising different policy challenges. The impact of the foresight on policy was limited, as it did not lead to direct policy measures, nevertheless, it confirmed some issues …

The Brave New World Of Ambient Intelligence: An Analysis Of Scenarios Regarding Privacy, Identity And Security Issues, Michael Friedewald, Elena Vildjiounaite, Yves Punie, David Wright

Michael Friedewald

The success of Ambient Intelligence (AmI) will depend on how secure it can be made, how privacy and other rights of individuals can be protected and how individuals can come to trust the intelligent world that surrounds them and through which they move. This contribution presents an analysis of ambient intelligence scenarios, particularly in regard to AmI's impacts on and implications for individual privacy. The analysis draws on our review of more than 70 AmI projects, principally in Europe. It notes the visions as well as the specifics of typical AmI scenarios. Several conclusions can be drawn from the analysis, …

Intelligent devices embedded everywhere and inter-connected with always-on capability will enable new services and applications to emerge but also greatly magnify the risk of abuse of the exchanged data. This article will present the need to develop safeguards in order to protect valuable assets if society at large is to benefit from AmI. Since the challenge lies in identifying safeguards for threats and vulnerabilities that are yet to be defined, the dark scenarios developed by the SWAMI project (Safeguards in a World of Ambient Intelligence) , will be presented as a tool to help illustrate risks that need to be …

Perspectives Of Ambient Intelligence In The Home Environment, Michael Friedewald, Olivier Da Costa, Yves Punie, Petteri Alahuhta, Sirkka Heinonen Jan 2005

Perspectives Of Ambient Intelligence In The Home Environment, Michael Friedewald, Olivier Da Costa, Yves Punie, Petteri Alahuhta, Sirkka Heinonen

Michael Friedewald

Ambient Intelligence is a vision of the future information society stemming from the convergence of ubiquitous computing, ubiquitous communication and intelligent user-friendly interfaces. It offers an op- portunity to realise an old dream, i.e. the smart or intelligent home. Will it fulfil the promises or is it just an illusion – offering apparently easy living while actually increasing the complexity of life? This article touches upon this question by discussing the technologies, applications and social implications of ambient intelligence in the home environment. It explores how Ambient Intelligence may change our way of life. It concludes that there are great …

Nutzeranforderungen Und Zukünftige Endgeräte Für Online-Dienste, Michael Friedewald, Castulus Kolo

Michael Friedewald

What Users Expect From Future Terminal Devices:Empirical Results From An Expert Survey, Castulus Kolo, Michael Friedewald

Michael Friedewald

For the acceptance of future network-based media services the technical advancement of the man-machine interface is of great importance. The Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and In- novation Research (ISI) in Karlsruhe has conducted an expert survey on different acceptance factors, on the future development of media usage behavior, on network infrastructure and terminal devices as well as on the expected market development. Drawing on the results we point out perspectives in the light of today’s user needs and the technical possibilities.
