Mapping International Chaos, Dylan Kissane
Mapping International Chaos, Dylan Kissane
Dylan Kissane
Mapping is inherently a subjective and exclusionary practice as the cartographer decides which elements of the world are included and which can safely be ignored. Similarly, when an international relations theorist describes a new theory it is necessary to define the elements which are essential to understanding the complexities of an international political system, explain why other elements have been excluded and justify why those decisions were made. The subjective nature of theorizing international affairs and the necessary exclusionary practices in which the theorist engages mean that the arguments supporting a new theory of international relations must be rather stronger …
Revolution In Political Affairs, Dylan Kissane
Revolution In Political Affairs, Dylan Kissane
Dylan Kissane
Extract:
"Recognising the marked impact of the internet on both practical politics and the practices of political scientists, it is not too large a step to paraphrase the US Department of Defence and decree the internet a Revolution in Political Affairs. Akin to its military phrase mate, the internet is effecting all areas of political discourse, exchange and public policy while, at the same time, forcing those who study and theorise politics to change their existing ways of thinking, working and imagining their chosen field..."
(Not So) Special Relationships: Explaining Alliance Behaviour In The English Speaking World [Relaţii (Nu Atât De) Speciale. Explicarea Comportamentului De Alianţă În Lumea Vorbitorilor De Limbă Engleză], Dylan Kissane
Dylan Kissane
ENGLISH: Throughout the 20th century the major powers in the global Anglosphere often found themselves allies in armed conflict. These war-time alliances – sometimes temporary, more often part of a longer term cooperation – are sometimes held to arise because of common histories, common values, similar national ideologies and similar notions of international right and wrong. Indeed, the political rhetoric surrounding declarations of war has often cited such factors as colonial history, international friendship and “special relationships” as motivators for joining armed coalitions against third party states. Yet while there stand stark examples of these major English speaking powers acting …

Pop Culture In The Classroom: American Idol, Karl Marx, And Alexis De Tocqueville, Miguel Centellas
Pop Culture In The Classroom: American Idol, Karl Marx, And Alexis De Tocqueville, Miguel Centellas
Miguel Centellas
This article discusses the use of pop culture in the classroom as a means to teach foundational political science authors and concepts. I focus on my experience using Amer- ican Idol as a point of reference to discuss Marx and Engel’s The Communist Manifesto and Tocqueville’s Democracy in America in undergraduate comparative politics courses. Stu- dents are asked to construct a written argument projecting Marx or Tocqueville’s percep- tions of American Idol, based on their readings. My experiences demonstrate that asking students to reflect on their own contemporary experience through the prism of these two works helps them in three …

A Tale Of Two Campaigns: A Comparative Assessment Of The Internet In French And Us Presidential Elections, Dylan Kissane
A Tale Of Two Campaigns: A Comparative Assessment Of The Internet In French And Us Presidential Elections, Dylan Kissane
Dylan Kissane
French politicians, like those in democracies around the world, were enthralled by the success of Democratic candidate Barack Obama in the 2008 US Presidential elections. Part of that thrall sprung from the candidate’s embrace of internet campaigning and his use of Web 2.0 tools to communicate his ideas, raise campaign funds and break through to voters that might otherwise not be reached through traditional and mainstream media campaigning. In the wake of Obama’s win, speculation emerged that internet and Web 2.0 campaigning would soon become a key tool in French politics, particularly at the personality-driven and high-profile Presidential level. In …

Opinion Polls And Presidential Campaign In Colombia, Fernando Estrada
Fernando Estrada
The polls, these surveys do not withstand any rigorous testing. And contrary to expand the formation of public opinion, impaired. To overcome this defect should propose means fewer surveys and more discussions. Presidential campaigns should seek democratic enlargement, and a less massive media exposure to foot the surveys. Reconstruction Of Concept Of Paradigm In Thomas S. Kuhn, Fernando Estrada
Reconstruction Of Concept Of Paradigm In Thomas S. Kuhn, Fernando Estrada
Fernando Estrada
This article aims to discuss an evaluation of the concept of paradigm of T. Kuhn in his representative work: The Structure of Scientific Revolutions ERC, [Ku96] and the complementary version by W. Stegmüller, Structure and dynamics of theories EDT, [Steg83]. This refined interpretation of the concept of paradigm allows for a more complete set of central Kuhnian concept.
Democracy In Dangerous Places: Colombia. Vote With Paramilitary Preferences, Fernando Estrada
Democracy In Dangerous Places: Colombia. Vote With Paramilitary Preferences, Fernando Estrada
Fernando Estrada
This paper discusses the problem of paramilitary violence in Colombia and its effects on democracy. The elections were part of the purpose of self defense and constituted a disguised form to retain its drug trafficking economy. The impacts on institutional technology have been negative: representative democracy, the electoral system and voting, they were not the same. With paramilitary violence changed the electoral map in areas contested by the traditional political parties. Voting with paramilitary preferences mean the biggest challenge is constitutional democracy in Colombia.

Carnap Model (Cm) Visual Field, Fernando Estrada
Carnap Model (Cm) Visual Field, Fernando Estrada
Fernando Estrada
The present paper proposes an interpretation theoretical model of the Aufbau of Rudolf Carnap, this interpretation contributes to upgrade the project original carnapiano, in the sense of conferring to the constitutional program of construction logical, less committed analytic equipment with an ontology or clearly defined epistemology. The setting in phenomenal logical reconstruction practice is elaborated for the visual field as a model whose potential user is a fellow ideal percipient, and, a subject epistemic that operates in the same way that a scheduled computer when he has been given basic phenomenal information and some algorithms logical
Facts And Nature Of Scientific Discovery. Ludwick Fleck And Thomas Kuhn, Fernando Estrada
Facts And Nature Of Scientific Discovery. Ludwick Fleck And Thomas Kuhn, Fernando Estrada
Fernando Estrada
Studies of L. Fleck, T. S. Kuhn, N. R. Hanson on the nature of scientific development and thus of a scientific fact, despite their differences, has raised new questions in fields as diverse as the history of science, sociology of science and philosophy of scientific language. At the same time, have pointed unfounded assumptions underlying the current ideas about what are 'facts', and have suggested alternative ways to focus the epistemology of scientific knowledge. Let us identify some detail the implications that flow from our study in this chapter for the proposed research as hypotheses
The Tragedy Of Forced Displacement, Fernando Estrada
The Tragedy Of Forced Displacement, Fernando Estrada
Fernando Estrada
o far in 2009, due to the intensification of armed conflict, approximately 15 thousand Colombians crossed some border areas of Colombia with Ecuador, Panama and Venezuela. The Lower Putumayo (Putumayo), area of application of Plan Colombia, was the region most affected by armed confrontation and thus it presented a greater number of Colombians uprooted. From this region generated the most significant exodus to Ecuador (about 7 million people).
Diagrams Of Argumentation, Fernando Estrada
Diagrams Of Argumentation, Fernando Estrada
Fernando Estrada
This article is aimed at viewing the evidence in the legal and political debate. A relatively little attention in the literature expert. Relying on the philosophy of science and a little less in legal theory, we note that the explanations under inductive legal and political knowledge, and the arguments about evidence and proof, connections are based on probabilistic and assumptions rebuttable and not on speculations embodied theoretical goal. The support base to represent the legal debate - now has strong political component of formal logic and empirical research.
Electoral System And Political Parties. Preliminary Notes To The Colombia Case, Fernando Estrada
Electoral System And Political Parties. Preliminary Notes To The Colombia Case, Fernando Estrada
Fernando Estrada
This brief survey of the origins of electoral system is intended to explain the nature center and get the changes of political system in Colombia. A historical evaluation is necessary. In a wider context the work of Josep Colomer are illustrative. Our goal is to synthesize and compare the evolution and changes in electoral systems, in order to project the electoral history in the Colombian political system. The election rules have not been the same all the time and votes depends on the evolution and transformations of democracies. In a story line that emerges from M. Duverger, shows that factions …
Moving Beyond Anarchy: A Complex Alternative To A Realist Assumption, Dylan Kissane
Moving Beyond Anarchy: A Complex Alternative To A Realist Assumption, Dylan Kissane
Dylan Kissane
Realist international relations theory is the most influential theoretical approach in the discipline of international relations. Within the realist paradigm there are several realist approaches. Various approaches, including classical realism, neorealism, offensive realism, neo-classical realism, and game theory, are part of the realist paradigm but some make different theoretically relevant assumptions, notably about international politics, international actors and actors’ motivations.
The first part of this thesis seeks to demonstrate how, despite their other differences, a fundamental assumption that anarchy determines the nature of international politics is characteristic of realist theorists as notable and different as classical realists Thucydides, Niccolò Machiavelli, …
Haiti Needs Socialism, David E. Clark
Haiti Needs Socialism, David E. Clark
David E Clark
Bill Clinton said that the Tsunami survivors six years ago deserved the chance to decide their own future. Haiti deserves the same hands-off approach as they rebuild after the 2010 earthquake. Aristide should be allowed to return and work with Venezuela and Cuba. If he decides to implement the same socialist reforms that have worked elsewhere in the Americas, so be it.
The Government Shareholder: Regulating Public Ownership Of Private Enterprise, Benjamin A. Templin
The Government Shareholder: Regulating Public Ownership Of Private Enterprise, Benjamin A. Templin
Benjamin A. Templin
During the subprime financial crisis of 2007-2009, the U.S. transformed its policies from a focus on privatization and deregulation to one where the government plays an active role as a market participant. By the end of the 2009 fiscal year, the U.S. government became one of the largest shareholders in the world owning a portfolio of investments valued at $959 billion. Some pundits condemned the investments as socialism. The sudden increase in the government portfolio is better understood as a Keynesian response to market failure rather than a change in the political economy. However, the dramatic increase in the government …
A Lockean Defense Of The Political Question Doctrine's Application In War Powers Cases, Matthew Jordan Cochran
A Lockean Defense Of The Political Question Doctrine's Application In War Powers Cases, Matthew Jordan Cochran
Matthew Jordan Cochran
This article provides a social contract explanation of and justification for the political question doctrine's application in war powers disputes. Natural legal principles demonstrate that even if the doctrine stands on unsure footing in some respects, it properly renders non-justiciable any supposed conflict between Congress and the President. As a detailed look into John Locke's work reveals, the intervening of a judiciary power into war decisions robs a government of the touchstone of its legitimacy.

“Post-Amnesty Niger Delta And The Promise Of Development: Issues, Prospects And Problems, Omololu Toluwanimi Omololu
Omololu Michael FAGBADEBO
The offer of amnesty to militants in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria was premised on the assumption that it would engender an enabling environment for meaningful development of the area. This paper seeks to project into the problems that may likely jeopardize this assumption. It identifies the windows of opportunity for a lasting peace in the region but expresses doubts about positive change in the character of the Nigerian State. As privatized state, political actors exploit the state to pursue personal and parochial interests rather than implementation of policies aimed at improving the development of the Niger Delta area.
