Are Social Norms Campaigns Really Magic Bullets? Assessing The Effects Of Students' Misperceptions On Drinking Behavior, Michelle Campo, Dominique Brossard, S. Frazer, Timothy Marchell

In an attempt to curb excessive drinking on college campuses, many universities have turned to "social norms" marketing campaigns. Despite widespread acceptance among health educators, empirical results are clouded by measurement problems. This study, based on a random sample of 550 students, examined the effects of misperceptions of friends' and typical college students' drinking on one's drinking behavior. Results indicate that drinking behavior is positively related to perceptions of friends' drinking as suggested by the theory of planned behavior, which emphasizes subjective as opposed to social norms.

Fixtures are designed to accurately locate and secure a part during machining operations such that the part can be manufactured to design specifications. To reduce the design costs associated with fixturing, various computer-aided fixture design (CAFD) methods have been developed through the years to assist the fixture designer. One approach is to use a case-based reasoning (CBR) approach where relevant design experience is retrieved from a design library, and adapted to provide a new fixture design solution. This practical guide focuses on identifying victims of sexual trafficking, meaning they have been trafficked for commercial sex acts, such as prostitution or other forms of sexual exploitation, such as stripping, lap dancing, or production of pornography. Although there are commonalities between victims of sexual and labor trafficking, there are sufficient differences to require separate focus. Therefore, this guide does not describe ways to identify victims who have been trafficked for forced labor, such as domestic servants and sweat shop or migrant farm workers.

Objective. To forecast growth in the US nursing home population, as a function of trends in disability and marriage.

Methods. Nursing home residence is modeled as a function of disability status, marital status, and other demographic covariates. Our predictions for nursing home residence are built upon joint forecasts of marriage and disability. We use data from the 1992 to 1996 Medicare Current Beneficiary Surveys, which are individual-level data sets designed to be representative of the US population older than the age of 65.

Results. Today's young cohorts will have higher rates and levels of institutionalization than their older counterparts. …

The Complexity Of Price Discovery In An Efficient Market: The Stock Market Reaction To The Challenger Crash, Michael Maloney, J Mulherin

We provide evidence on the speed and accuracy of price discovery by studying stock returns and trading volume surrounding the crash of the space shuttle Challenger. While the event was widely observed, it took several months for an esteemed panel to determine which of the mechanical components failed during the launch. By contrast, in the period immediately following the crash, securities trading in the four main shuttle contractors seemingly singled out the firm that manufactured the faulty component. Conference report presented at the NASIG 18th annual conference held in 2003. Portland State University Library's fund allocation committee presented information and practical advice on the process of developing a model to reallocate funding for library materials. After experimenting with funding ratios, they decided to use their model to reallocate 30 percent of the funds earmarked for discipline-specific materials while protecting 70 percent of each discipline's original allocation.

Feudal European political-economic institutions included a self-sufficient manor with very little market exchange, barter rather than money, and production motivated only by the need of the manor rather than a profit. All of these institutions meant that a business cycle was impossible, though there were many other problems. Capitalist institutions include production only for market exchange, a monetary economy, and production motivated only by profit. All of these institutions make possible the business cycle--since a contraction may occur if there is insufficient monetary demand to buy the supply at a price including a profit.

This study examined the relationships of the Schedule for Nonadaptive and Adaptive Personality (SNAP) model of personality to 4 targeted personality disorders (PDs) in a large multisite sample of patients. Data were examined from 529 patients, who were assigned 1 of 5 primary diagnoses: borderline, schizotypal, avoidant, and obsessive–compulsive PDs and major depression without PD. Patients were administered the SNAP questionnaire and results were compared among diagnostic groups and between patient groups and nonclinical norms. Results indicated that the dimensions of the model appear to have considerable promise in differentiating normal from abnormal personality, particularly in the propensity of individuals …
