An Acoustic Study Of The American English Pronunciation Of Recently Arrived Korean Adult Immigrants, Ji Eun Kim, David J. Silva

David Silva

This research examines the production of English high and mid front vowels (/iɪ e ɛ/) by three groups of male Korean speakers whose length of residence in the United States has been relatively short: less than 1 year, 1-5 years, and 5-8 years. Acoustic analyses reveal several statistically significant differences among the three groups. For example, the high front vowels /i/ and /ɪI of the 'less than 1 year' group are significantly lower in front tongue constriction than the other groups. Furthermore, the 'less than 1 year' and '1-5 years' groups produce American English /i/ with a shorter duration than …

Review Of The Korean Alphabet Of 1446 By Sek Yen Kim-Cho And The Korean Alphabet By Young-Key Kim-Renaud, David Silva

Perhaps the most noteworthy product of Korean civilization, han'gŭl is a source of pride among Koreans: not only does it embody a sense of national uniqueness, but it is also a valuable tool against illiteracy. While this great cultural achievement has merited considerable attention in Korea, detailed English-language accounts of han'gŭl are scarce. Most prominent among this small body of work is Gari Ledyard's 1966 dissertation, "The Korean Language Reform of 1446," since republished (with modest revisions) in 1998. Two recent volumes about the Korean script are now looking to claim space alongside Ledyard's text: The Korean Alphabet of 1446 …

Linguistic Anthropology Of Education, Stanton Wortham, Betsy Rymes Dec 2002

Linguistic Anthropology Of Education, Stanton Wortham, Betsy Rymes

Betsy Rymes

Over the years, linguistic anthropological research has shown how classrooms are socializing institutions and how language functions as one medium through which this socialization is accomplished. Early work in the field has captured the immediacy of social practice and language use in educational contexts, and has created useful characterizations of variations in communicative competence. The present work builds on the strengths of prior work, showing how new theoretical concepts and empirical methods developed in linguistic anthropology over the last decade can further illuminate educational settings. The authors introduce an updated Linguistic Anthropology of Education which recognizes that, in the rapidly changing …

Developing Materials For The Teaching Of Grammar, Arshad Abd Samad Dec 2002

Developing Materials For The Teaching Of Grammar, Arshad Abd Samad

Arshad Abd Samad

Traditionally, materials used in the teaching of grammar have been for the specific purpose of providing grammar practice. Language drills used by the audiolingual method, for example, were structured in such a way so as to encourage automatic learning. Materials were used to pattern student language behaviour through carefully planned drill and practice. In the communicative approach, grammar activities tend to focus on interaction and reflect a social dimension. Materials used in this approach contain conversations and contextualised situations which focus on the message rather than the grammatical form. The kind of materials used in the teaching and learning of …

The Use Of Complimentary Closings In E-Mail: American English Examples, Elizabeth C. Scheyder Dec 2002

The Use Of Complimentary Closings In E-Mail: American English Examples, Elizabeth C. Scheyder

Elizabeth C Scheyder

This paper attempts to address the lack of clear stylistic guidelines for non-native speakers of English writing e-mails by focusing on the particular problem of closings. To assist teachers who are asked to guide students on this issue, the paper examines the complimentary closings that 175 native speakers of American English used in 532 unique e-mails to the author. Patterns are viewed in relation to the sender’s gender, age, and social distance to the recipient, as well as other factors. No closing at all was used in more than half of the e-mails studied, but closings did appear to depend …

Western Attitudes Toward The Korean Language: An Overview Of Late Nineteenth- And Early Twentieth-Century Mission Literature, David Silva Dec 2002

Western Attitudes Toward The Korean Language: An Overview Of Late Nineteenth- And Early Twentieth-Century Mission Literature, David Silva

David Silva

Descriptions of Korea's linguistic situation written by Westerners during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries not only reveal native and foreign attitudes toward the Korean language but also provide insight into language-focused evangelization tactics embraced by Christian missionaries. Upon their arrival in Korea during the 1800s, Westerners encountered a long-standing system of diglossia: socio-historical relations between China and Korea gave rise to the use of various Korean "lects" in which the degree of Chinese elements differed. Moreover, the nation's indigenous writing system, han'gul, was widely regarded by Koreans as culturally subordinate to Chinese script, an attitude that garnered much attention …

Toward A Theory Of Heritage Language Acquisition: Spanish In The United States, Andrew Lynch Dec 2002

Toward A Theory Of Heritage Language Acquisition: Spanish In The United States, Andrew Lynch

Andrew Lynch

The sociolinguistic realities of English and Spanish, at the national and world levels, have evolved in fundamental ways since the 1960s. Traditional theoretical models of language variation, bilingualism, and language shift in the US must be reconceptualized with the post-2000 context, and Spanish language educators must respond to the contemporary demands of their profession. In this essay, I give thought to the theoretical principles of Spanish heritage language acquisition in the US in the twenty-first century.
