To date, the relationship between diplomacy and international sport has been relatively under-theorized. This paper seeks to redress the deficiency by proposing an analytical taxonomy of the multiple convergences between international sport and diplomacy. The principal analytical distinction to be drawn is between (1) international sport consciously employed by governments as an instrument of diplomacy and (2) international-sport-as-diplomacy, the diplomatic representation, communication and negotiation between non-state actors that take place as a result of ongoing international sporting competition.

Sports-diplomacy is a familiar but relatively under-explored area of theory and practice in diplomatic studies. Existing scholarship is akin to sports-diplomacy's practice: anecdotal, sporadic articles that are case specific. This analysis posits that in the modern, plural diplomatic environment, sports-diplomacy does have potential, but that will not be realised until further discussion and scholarship is undertaken. Specifically, the “gap” in the diplomatic studies literature needs filling, as well as addressing and discussing the question: “do the benefits outweigh the dangers of ‘mixing’ sport and diplomacy?” The article's purpose is rudimentary. The central aim of this thesis is to deconstruct and reconstruct the dominant theoretical perceptions of diplomacy, by reworking radically existing theories of diplomacy. This thesis achieves reconceptualisation of diplomatic theory by critiquing the thoughts and ideas of theorists postulating on modern diplomacy. Consequently, this thesis is concerned (largely) with the theoretical terrain of diplomacy studies.
