Background: Physical inactivity and obesity are major public health issues. Recent studies have provided evidence that attributes of the built environment influence physical activity among adults and that factors such as greater urban sprawl are related to overweight and obesity. Few studies have developed objective individual-level measures of the built environment, a geographic scale that may be more relevant to certain types of physical activity, such as walking. In addition, further research is needed to assess the associations of both objective and perceived environmental factors with physical activity. In this 2-year exploratory study funded by the National Cancer Institute, we …

Librarians In The Hall, Catherine Fraser Riehle, Michael Witt

There is an old proverb, "If the mountain will not come to Mohammed, then Mohammed must go to the mountain." Without a university mandate for information literacy instruction, it is a challenge to engage our incoming undergraduate freshmen who are often overwhelmed by the higher expectations of scholarship at the college level and the complexities of the information environment. Unique and creative approaches are needed to reach millennial learners where they are, both physically in terms of where they reside on campus and pedagogically by employing new teaching methods that they can appreciate and understand. This poster presents a highly …

Enhancing Information Resources And Instruction With Computational And Chemical Software, Jeremy R. Garritano Jan 2008

Enhancing Information Resources And Instruction With Computational And Chemical Software, Jeremy R. Garritano

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

As the Chemistry Library begins to move journal subscriptions to electronic only access and experiments with e-books, physical space in the Library has been reallocated. One such transformation has allowed for installation of ten new computers within the Library. Not only do these workstations mirror current workstations throughout the rest of the University Libraries system, but they also have been enhanced with additional software for visualization, statistical anal., and data manipulation. As our users deal with more and more data compared to text based resources, adding these computational workstations appeared to be the next logical step. Besides being an open …

A Bioarchaeological Perspective On Egyptian Colonialism In Nubia During The New Kingdom, Michele Buzon Jan 2008

A Bioarchaeological Perspective On Egyptian Colonialism In Nubia During The New Kingdom, Michele Buzon

Department of Anthropology Faculty Publications

During the New Kingdom, Egypt began a military campaign to regain command over Nubia. Extremely successful, their control extended to the fourth cataract by the time of Thutmose III. The circumstances of this power, however, are not well known. It is unclear whether Egyptian colonists or locals administered Nubia during this time. Using a bioarchaeological approach via the study of human skeletal remains and archaeological data from the New Kingdom site of Tombos in Nubia and comparative Egyptian and Nubian skeletal samples, this paper addresses these long-standing questions. Analysesuggest that the Tombos individuals were an ethnically and biologically mixed group. …

Strategies For Institutional Repository Development: A Case Study Of Three Evolving Initiatives, Carole L. Palmer, Lauren C. Teffeau, Mark P. Newton Jan 2008

Strategies For Institutional Repository Development: A Case Study Of Three Evolving Initiatives, Carole L. Palmer, Lauren C. Teffeau, Mark P. Newton

Libraries Research Publications

As an evolving part of the profession of librarianship, institutional repository development is still in the process of establishing guiding principles and best practices. There is no one path to follow and few established cases from which to learn about development options and risks. This case study presents a close examination of the approaches taken at three university libraries, comparing choices, strategies, and conditions driving development activities. The most pronounced differences stem from how the initiatives are balancing content acquisition and service provision. Across cases, intellectual property concerns are prevalent, and repository goals and policies are often implicit, with the …

Curating Chemistry Data Through Its Lifecycle: A Collaboration Between Library And Laboratory In Scientific Data Preservation, Jeremy R. Garritano, Jake R. Carlson Jan 2008

Curating Chemistry Data Through Its Lifecycle: A Collaboration Between Library And Laboratory In Scientific Data Preservation, Jeremy R. Garritano, Jake R. Carlson

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

Collaborating with the Center for Authentic Science Practice in Education (CASPiE), the Purdue University Libraries have created a model for the capture and preservation of data as part of the experimental workflow. In the CASPiE program, students work closely with a faculty researcher on a real world research problem and generate data using a networked system of scientific instrumentation. The data may pass through three stages in its lifecycle. First, the data is the student's record within the course and therefore has educational value. Second, the data also supports the scientist's work and therefore has research value. Finally, the data …

Teaching Students To Use Company And Industry Information During Their Job Search, Jeremy R. Garritano Jan 2008

Teaching Students To Use Company And Industry Information During Their Job Search, Jeremy R. Garritano

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

Libraries and educational institutions provide access to a wide variety of resources that are useful in investigating potential employers, preparing for interviews, and predicting trends in industry. However, often this information is not found in traditional scientific and tech. resources that many chem. and chem. engineering students are familiar with using. This paper will present a no. of strategies for using company and industry resources to look at financial information, industry developments, and opinions of current employees, among other attributes, to better help student prep. themselves for the job market.
