Symmetry has been shown to be an important principle that guides the grouping of scene information. Previously, we have described a method for measuring the local, ribbon symmetry content of line-drawings of real-world scenes (Rezanejad, et al., MODVIS 2017), and we demonstrated that this information has important behavioral consequences (Wilder, et al., MODIVS 2017). Humans can use local cues to distinguish image edges caused by a depth change from other types of edges (Vilankar et al., 2014). But which local cues? Here we use the SYNS database (Adams et al., 2016) to automatically label edges in images of natural scenes as depth or non-depth. We use this ground truth to identify the cues used by human observers and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for edge classification. The ability of human visual systems to estimate 3D surface orientation from 2D retinal images is critical. But the computation to calculate 3D orientation in real-world scenes is not fully understood. A Bayes optimal model grounded in natural statistics has explained 3D surface tilt estimation of human observers in natural scenes (Kim and Burge, 2018). The aftereffects of adaptation to faces have been studied widely, in part to characterize the coding schemes for representing different facial attributes. Bi-stable perception has been an important tool to investigate how visual input is interpreted and how it reaches consciousness. To explain the mechanisms of this phenomenon, it has been assumed that a mutual inhibition circuit plays a key role. The visual representation of shape reduces a high-dimensional input into a smaller set of more informative features. These features can span a range of abstractions from shallow features based on statistical summaries of images, to deep features related to the generative causes of the shapes. Chetverikov, Campana, and Kristjansson (2017) used visual search to demonstrate that human observers are able to extract statistical distributions of visual features. Observers searched for an odd-one-out target with distractors randomly drawn from the same distribution over the course of several “prime” trials. Then, on test trials parameters of the target and distractors changed and response times (RT) were analyzed as a function of the distance between the target position in feature space and the mean of distractor features during prime trials. A central goal in vision science is to identify features that are important for object and scene recognition. Reverse correlation methods have been used to uncover features important for recognizing faces and other stimuli with low intra-class variability. However, these methods are less successful when applied to natural scenes with variability in their appearance.

Contrast-dependent orientation illusions are phenomena in which the appearance of the illusion depends not only on geometrical arrangements of the constituents of illusory configurations, but also on their luminance levels. Whereas certain standard configurations may evoke strong illusory effects, their contrast-manipulated variants (configurations in which only the luminance contrast polarity of some of their elements is manipulated, while retaining the geometry of the standard versions) may show weakened or no illusory effects, or even reversed illusions.
