Introduction, Stephen G. Krueger, Keahi Adolpho, Krista Mccracken

Dartmouth Library Staff Publications

In the library profession, and in the world as a whole, the experiences of trans and gender diverse people often go unnoticed, hidden, and ignored. But we are here. Trans and Gender Diverse Voices in Libraries is entirely written and edited by trans and gender diverse people involved in the field: its fifty-seven authors include workers from academic and public libraries, special collections and archives, and more; LIS students; and a few people who have left the library profession completely.

This book is not intended to be the definitive guide to trans and gender diverse experiences in libraries, but instead …

Trans Inclusion Through Name Change Policies In Institutional Repositories, Stephen G. Krueger Dec 2021

Trans Inclusion Through Name Change Policies In Institutional Repositories, Stephen G. Krueger

Dartmouth Library Staff Publications

As awareness and acceptance of trans and gender diverse people grows, scholarly publishing has seen a movement to support trans authors through inclusive name change policies. This work mainly happens through trans scholars approaching publishers and requesting these changes. Sometimes this results in a new policy that supports the authors and protects them from being outed to co-authors and readers; other times, the policies are less than ideal or do not change at all. While most of the focus is on publishers and organizations, institutional repositories can and should take similar steps to respect and protect their trans authors. This …

Active Learning: Overcoming Barriers And Changing Culture, Laura Barrett, Katie Harding

Dartmouth Library Staff Publications

Active learning is a student-centered and effective pedagogical approach, but there are practical barriers that can make it difficult to employ. As instructors and facilitators in Dartmouth’s Librarians Active Learning Institute, we’ve experienced and heard about the challenges librarians face when trying to incorporate active learning in their teaching, including faculty expectations, time constraints, class sizes, space constraints, and virtual learning environments.

In this session, we will share strategies for helping librarians to overcome these challenges and incorporate active learning pedagogy into their teaching practice. We will present approaches for communicating with faculty about our roles as teachers and partnering …

Sorrow, Fury, Helplessness, And Cynicism: An Account Of The Library Of Congress Subject Heading "Illegal Aliens", Jill E. Baron, Tina Gross

Dartmouth Library Staff Publications

This book chapter reviews the various stages of response to the “Illegal aliens” subject heading change, including the initial advocacy within both the undocumented student community and the library community, the Library of Congress’s announcement that it would enact the change, the subsequent backlash among conservative politicians and media, and the resulting inaction on the part of the Library of Congress. Whereas the library profession seized the mantle of activism in reaction to the Patriot Act, the response to the Library of Congress’ inaction has been lukewarm at best. As two of the librarians involved in the initial and ongoing …

Zombies In The Library Stacks, Laura Braunstein, Michelle R. Warren Jan 2021

Zombies In The Library Stacks, Laura Braunstein, Michelle R. Warren

Dartmouth Library Staff Publications

This chapter examines "the stacks" as a "zombie category" that retains the power to shape understanding despite being outmoded. We analyze three ways of thinking about "the stacks" that sustain digital humanities: first, the physical library stacks that are part of the information architecture that arranges scholarship; second, the technology stack of globalized computing that distributes scholarship; and finally, the social stack of human relationships that make everything possible. Each stack reveals something different about the digital humanities and the patterns of labor embedded within it. Drawing on the sociological lessons of the zombie category, we aim to disaggregate the …

Transferring A Unique Collection To The Institutional Repository, Stephen G. Krueger

Dartmouth Library Staff Publications

Until fall 2020, the Computer Science department at Dartmouth College maintained an online collection of technical reports on their website. Faculty and librarians have worked together to transfer the collection to the school's institutional repository, Dartmouth Digital Commons. The project involved several major components: the creation of a space in the IR that met the specific needs of the collection, the transfer of existing materials so that the previous site could be deleted without losing any content, and the development of a workflow for adding future materials. In this presentation, the librarian responsible for the project will describe the process. …

Assessing Textbook Costs At A Small College, Stephen G. Krueger, Lewis Ward

Dartmouth Library Staff Publications

In recent years, the cost of textbooks has risen drastically, making it an important issue for everyone involved in higher education. Accurate and specific information on the cost of textbooks is needed to effectively address the situation. Over the summer of 2018, a librarian and an undergraduate student at a small liberal arts college assessed the textbook costs at their institution, using methodology developed by community colleges doing similar research. Based on course catalogs, bookstore records, and other resources, they calculated the costs for students in different disciplines over four years of study. These costs were impacted by major, courses …

What It Means To Be Out: Queer, Trans, And Gender Nonconforming Identities In Library Work, Zoe Fisher, Stephen G. Krueger, Robin Goodfellow Malamud, Ericka Patillo

Dartmouth Library Staff Publications

Queer library workers face the decision of how and when to express their gender identities and sexual orientations at work. In what ways does being “out” in the library workplace impact our work? This coauthored chapter brings together the perspectives of two academic librarians, a current LIS grad student, and an academic library administrator to provide multiple ways of seeing the complexities of expressing gender identity and sexual orientation in the library workplace. We discuss the intersection of library values, politics, change management, patron interactions, and work environments.

Remix The Medieval Manuscript: Experiments With Digital Infrastructure, Laura Braunstein, Michelle R. Warren, Baylauris Byrnesim Sep 2018

Remix The Medieval Manuscript: Experiments With Digital Infrastructure, Laura Braunstein, Michelle R. Warren, Baylauris Byrnesim

Dartmouth Library Staff Publications

Remix the Manuscript: A Chronicle of Digital Experiments is a collaborative research project that takes up this challenge. It brings together academics, librarians, technologists, conservators, and students to study the many permutations of a single manuscript—a fifteenth-century Middle English prose chronicle of Great Britain, commonly referred to as the “Prose Brut.” Our project raises fundamental questions about the digital research environment. How is today’s code configuring tomorrow’s historical knowledge? How do digital technologies affect our access to and understanding of material culture? By investigating these broad questions through the example of one manuscript, we define a limited yet infinitely …

Are We There Yet? Sustaining Enthusiasm And Powering The Repository Road Trip, Jen W. Green Jun 2018

Are We There Yet? Sustaining Enthusiasm And Powering The Repository Road Trip, Jen W. Green

Dartmouth Library Staff Publications

Like a road trip, building and sustaining an open repository is rich with anticipation, road maps, detours, persistence, perseverance, and finally, a deep sense of accomplishment for weathering the experiences and reaching a destination. Dartmouth’s repository road trip has been long and winding, but in 2017 the Library launched Open Dartmouth: Faculty Open Access on Digital Commons. After a long journey, this seemed like the primary destination, but like most road trips, the destination was the start of the next journey: sustaining growth and participation to continue to build this valuable open resource.

Road trips offer time to better understand …

New Perspectives On Congressional Collections: A Study Of Survey And Assessment, Maurita Baldock, J. Wendel Cox Jan 2018

New Perspectives On Congressional Collections: A Study Of Survey And Assessment, Maurita Baldock, J. Wendel Cox

Dartmouth Library Staff Publications

Archivists have grappled with the processing and management challenges of congressional collections, but have spent less time exploring the use of these collections or their utility for research outside traditional topics and disciplines. This case study examines how two department projects produced new insights into congressional collections at an institution examining the importance of its political materials within its collection development policy. A survey of Native American collection materials led to a new understanding of the vast scholarly potential of congressional collections. Likewise, a general assessment of special collections revealed the popularity of congressional collections and the nature of their …

Serving Transgender Patrons In Academic Libraries, Stephen G. Krueger

Dartmouth Library Staff Publications

The Future Voices in Public Services column is a forum for graduate students in library and information science programs to discuss key issues in academic library public services, to envision what they feel librarians in public service have to offer to academia, to tell us their visions for the profession, or to share research being conducted in library schools. We hope to provide fresh perspectives from those entering our field, in both the United States and other countries. Interested faculty of graduate library and information science programs, who would like their students’ ideas represented in these pages, are invited to …

Defining Dartmouth: Inclusion And Exclusion At Dartmouth College 1917-2017, Laura Barrett May 2017

Defining Dartmouth: Inclusion And Exclusion At Dartmouth College 1917-2017, Laura Barrett

Dartmouth Library Staff Publications

Dartmouth College’s demographics have shifted over the past one hundred years, from an almost entirely all male, white, and wealthy student body, to one with gender, racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic diversity. During this time, the College has endeavored to maintain its reputation as an academically exclusive institution for the intellectual elite while simultaneously opening its doors continually wider to a more diverse student population. These aspirations, for broad inclusivity within the bounds of narrow exclusivity, have frequently worked in opposition to one another, and Dartmouth’s administrators have led the College in a delicate balancing act amid shifting alumni demands, student …

Opportunities And Risks: Perceptions Of Student Publishing From Across Campus, Barbara Defelice, Laura Barrett Mar 2017

Opportunities And Risks: Perceptions Of Student Publishing From Across Campus, Barbara Defelice, Laura Barrett

Dartmouth Library Staff Publications

We are developing an experiential learning program, “Preparing Students to be Arbiters of New Scholarship,” funded by our campus teaching center. Through this work, we have found much enthusiasm for publishing student scholarship. However, we have also heard a wide range of concerns about sharing student work more widely. In this poster, we will describe how we are engaging both the enthusiasm and the concerns as rich opportunities in an experiential learning framework.

Student journal publishing is intrinsically a co-curricular experiential learning activity. Our campus’s framework for experiential learning includes: 1. Innovate and take risks 2. Solve complex problems 3. …

Shifting Frames: Creating Collaborations At The Intersections Of Scholarly Communication And Information Literacy, Laura Barrett, Barbara Defelice

Dartmouth Library Staff Publications

Through new frameworks, the librarians at Dartmouth have successfully forwarded connections among experiential learning and scholarly communication initiatives. We discuss creative collaborations across campus that deeply integrate the expertise of librarians into the core work of academic institutions.

Building on the philosophical framework presented in the ACRL Whitepaper “Intersections of Scholarly Communication and Information Literacy”, librarians in different roles at Dartmouth have forged connections among the experiential learning and scholarly communication conversations campus-wide. This is most evident in programs that include new ways of teaching copyright, outreach around the Dartmouth Faculty Open Access Policy, and an Experiential Learning Initiative grant, “Preparing …

Survey, Understanding, And Ethical Stewardship Of Indigenous Collections: A Case Study, Verónica Reyes-Escudero, J. Wendel Cox

Dartmouth Library Staff Publications

The Aboriginal and Torres Islander Protocols for Libraries, Archives, and Information Sources, the Protocols for Native American Archival Materials, and other directives provide invaluable direction for professionals concerned with ethical stewardship of collections with Indigenous content, however, a fundamental challenge remains: how do we establish sufficient understanding of Indigenous content in our collections to initiate the dialogue of shared stewardship? We describe a survey of a university manuscript collection for Indigenous content and its unanticipated challeges and changes to our understanding of the collection. We conclude that the process of surveying the collection for Indigenous content is itself integral to …

Librarians Are In The House! Unconventional Strategies For Outreach To Your Campus Community, Laura Barrett, Katie Harding

Dartmouth Library Staff Publications

In 2016, our private four-year institution launched a new undergraduate housing model with the goal of providing more opportunities for intellectual engagement through social encounters among students, faculty, and staff. During the day, the campus is an intellectually-engaged community with free exchange of ideas among community members. The housing communities aim to extend this dynamic more fully into the student experience, after hours and outside of the classroom.

The Library’s mission is to foster intellectual growth by supporting excellence and innovation in education and research. We were enthusiastic about the potential both for improved student experience and for opportunities to …

Information Literacy For Archives And Special Collections: Defining Outcomes, Peter Carini

Dartmouth Library Staff Publications

This article provides the framework for a set of standards and outcomes that would constitute information literacy with primary sources. Based on a working model used at Dartmouth College’s Rauner Special Collections Library in Hanover, New Hampshire, these concepts create a framework for teaching with primary source materials intended to produce expert users at the undergraduate level. At the same time, these concepts establish a structure for archivists and librarians to use in assessing their work with faculty and students.
