Making Decisions: Using Electronic Data Collection To Re-Envision Reference Services At The Usf Tampa Libraries, Lily Todorinova, Barbara Lewis, Andy Huse, Matt Torrence
Academic Services Faculty and Staff Publications
Declining reference statistics, diminishing human resources, and the desire to be more proactive and embedded in academic depart- ments, prompted the University of South Florida Library to create a taskforce for re-envisioning reference services. The taskforce was charged with examining the staffing patterns at the desk and developing recommendations to give librarians greater flexibility and to better respond to the information-seeking needs of users. These recommendations were based on statistics of desk usage, collected with the newly adapted online tool Desk Tracker, and structured interviews with library administrators. The taskforce was interested in how these stakeholders use quantitative data in …

Report Of The Nelson Poynter Memorial Library Collection Committee, University Of South Florida Saint Petersburg, Nelson Poynter Memorial Library., Patricia C. Pettijohn, Kaya Van Beynen, Allison Etzel, Gerald A. Notaro, Carissa Santana
Library Department and Committee Reports
This report began as a charge from the Dean of Library to investigate the anticipated costs of electronic resources required to support university teaching and research; including staffing, staff training, licensing and purchasing of data and resources, and the technology required to store, and remotely access resources. The committee also examined expenditures on electronic resources by other institutions, both within State of Florida public higher education, and in comparison to institutions similar in size and programmatic characteristics to USFSP. After considering the many factors that must influence the one-time and recurring expenses, the Committee concludes that to provide electronic resources …

A Comparative Study Of Methods To Explore Searchers' Affective Perceptions Of Images, Jungwon Yoon
A Comparative Study Of Methods To Explore Searchers' Affective Perceptions Of Images, Jungwon Yoon
School of Information Faculty Publications
Introduction. Previous search query analysis studies demonstrated that emotional perceptions and needs tend not to be sufficiently reflected in image queries. To provide a better understanding of the emotional attributes of an image, this study explored and compared such attributes obtained from related tasks.
Method. This study analysed attributes of an image through sorting, describing and searching. A data-set was obtained from Flickr images tagged with one of six basic emotions (love, joy, surprise, anger, sadness and fear); fifty-nine students participated.
Results. The sorting and describing tasks revealed two categories of emotions, joy and sadness, which people perceive from …
Coping With Hobgoblins: Rethinking Journals Processing In The E-Journals Environment At The University Of South Florida, Carol Ann Borchert
Coping With Hobgoblins: Rethinking Journals Processing In The E-Journals Environment At The University Of South Florida, Carol Ann Borchert
Academic Resources Faculty and Staff Publications
Many libraries grapple with how to develop new skills for processing electronic journals, while still handling the print format as well. Journals in a print format have always been complex, and adding the electronic component has made them more so. Few libraries are adding staff to handle this workload. The University of South Florida Tampa Library has tried a number of workflow changes--not always successfully--to handle this transition. This paper will explore these changes, explaining why some were not successful and why others have resulted in efficiencies, and concludes with lessons learned that could benefit others.

This study will assess various aspects of library services and resources from the user perspective, utilizing a number of methodologies, including surveys, usability testing, observation, and focus groups. In-depth examination of how students and faculty use the library will guide our efforts to improve library services and resources and facility that relate to student success.

Social Work Faculty Publications
This study examined Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) acceptability among female sex workers, male-to-female transgendered persons, and men who have sex with men in Lima, Peru. Focus groups explored social issues associated with PrEP acceptability and conjoint analysis assessed preferences among eight hypothetical PrEP scenarios with varying attribute profiles and their relative impact on acceptability. Conjoint analysis revealed that PrEP acceptability ranged from 19.8 to 82.5 out of a possible score of 100 across the eight hypothetical PrEP scenarios. Out-of-pocket cost had the greatest impact on PrEP acceptability (25.2, p < 0.001), followed by efficacy (21.4, p < 0.001) and potential side effects (14.7, p < 0.001). Focus group data supported these findings, and also revealed that potential sexual risk disinhibition, stigma and discrimination associated with PrEP use, and mistrust of health care professionals were also concerns. These issues will require careful attention when planning for PrEP roll-out if proven efficacious in ongoing clinical trials.

Development And Validation Of The Minnesota Borderline Personality Disorder Scale, Marina Bornovalova, Brian M Hicks, Christopher J. Patrick, William G Iacono, Matt Mcgue

Although large epidemiological data sets can inform research on the etiology and development of borderline personality disorder (BPD), they rarely include BPD measures. In some cases, however, proxy measures can be constructed using instruments already in these data sets. In this study, the authors developed and validated a self-report measure of BPD from the Multidimensional Personality Questionnaire (MPQ). Items for the new instrument—the Minnesota BPD scale (MBPD) —were identified and refined using three large samples: undergraduates, community adolescent twins, and urban substance users. The authors determined the construct validity of the MBPD scale by examining its association with (a) diagnosed …

Resistance Meets Spirituality In Academia: "I Prayed On It!", Vonzell Agosto, Zorka Karanxha

We describe the lived experiences of a Black Woman educational leader who has studied and worked in the academy and in the field of K-12 education. This partial life history, excavated through the tenets of Critical Race Theory (CRT), illuminates the social construction of race and the pervasiveness and permanence of racism. We determined through a series of interviews that the participant's resilient resistance is guided by critical spirituality so that circumstances and people who challenge her also confront this source of power. Her lived experience, from student to faculty member, conveys the challenges and opportunities she faces and adds …

This paper explores Resource Description and Access the new cataloging standard better known as RDA. While RDA has not been officially adopted yet by the Library of Congress, the new standards are available and many libraries have purchased a set of standards either online or in print. Some libraries have even started to implement small changes. The purpose of this paper is to provide basic information about RDA and look at the differences between RDA and AACR2 (Anglo-American Cataloging Rules) which is the current standard. The first section of the paper will explain the background RDA and discuss the foundations …
