The following presentation offer best practices and guidelines on how to prepare your Digital Commons’ descriptive metadata to be harvested and displayed into the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH).

Attendants will learn how to: 1) customize a metadata upload form in Digital Commons to display specific metadata fields, 2) choose the most appropriate schema to display metadata for particular collections, and 3) map the metadata to the appropriate BePress proprietary schema elements that can display correctly into the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) for harvesting purposes.

Kevin Tanner addresses the importance of professional identity in librarianship. In the Summer 2015 semester, he completed an independent study on the construction of professional identity of librarians on Twitter through professional development and networking. During this session, he shares the results of that study and give suggestions on how you can begin to find your own professional identity while still retaining your individuality. While there are many stereotypes about librarians, they are not “one-size-fits-all” professionals, and a new modern image of the professional has begun to emerge in the digital age through a thoughtful reflection on identity.

The School of Nursing was planning to take ownership of the OA journal,Online Journal of Rural Nursing and Health Care, and the new editor asked if the Libraries would assist with the editorial and managerial process. Erin Rushton, Web Services and Nursing Librarian, was named Managing Editor. She helps support the publishing system and prepares the pdfs for publication. She also ensures the journal is indexed and preserved in the Libraries’ preservation system. Course Management Systems (CMS), such as Blackboard, Sakai, Canvas Instructure, and Moodle are ubiquitous in the classroom environment. These systems are bridging the gap between traditional, hybrid, and fully online classes, as most academic institutions have adopted the use of a CMS across a wide spectrum: from serving to keep track of administrative processes, such as grading and attendance, to being the main tool for organizing and communicating course information for both faculty and students. Students in those fields are expected to achieve certain competencies that demonstrate their ability to conduct research. However, students at the undergraduate and graduate levels are often at a loss as to how to optimize their search strategies across multiple, online databases. This is particularly true when researching minority or ‘hidden’ populations.
