Strauss Library at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus was part of the regional group of repositories called Mountain Scholar using DSpace when the lead for Mountain Scholar, Colorado State University (CSU), announced that they could no longer afford to support the Mountain Scholar instance. All the libraries currently part of Mountain Scholar had to decide whether to migrate to ContentDM with CSU or strike out on their own. Strauss Library considered our options, and with University of Colorado Boulder using Samvera, decided to pursue migrating to Samvera. This presentation examines the process of building a conference collection on Digital Commons with a discussion on stakeholder collaboration, collection architecture, and promotion, and reciprocal benefit to both scholars and repository managers.

Conference collections enhance attendees' experiences by creating a live archive of conference materials, viewable both during and after the event. Collections provide meaningful metrics for interactions with conference materials, which exist as grey literature that may otherwise go unseen by wider audiences. Building conference collections vary in time and complexity, based on stakeholder needs and overall vision for the conference and its attendees. Creating conference collections that are …

In 2017 the Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library partnered with The George Washington University School of Nursing to create a permanent digital archive for their Doctor of Nursing Practice project collection in our instance of Digital Commons. DNP projects are a unique type of content because they provide important research about nursing practices, but often go unpublished elsewhere. The GW DNP collection now contains over 120 items that have been downloaded over 95,000 times and therefore we were eager to explore additional avenues for disseminating this content beyond our IR and its subsequent indexing platforms. Both institutional repositories and cultural heritage institutions have broadly defined collection development policies. As such, many collections could appropriately reside in both. However, at many institutions digital libraries that support cultural heritage collections are often supported by CONTENTdm, while institutional repository initiatives are supported by another platform--in Clemson's case, DigitalCommons. Librarians at Clemson University identified several key collections that fit both the scope of its institutional repository and digital library. A great deal of the professional literature is devoted to developing content and faculty buy-in for institutional repositories. However, little is known about the end users of these repositories. This is unfortunate since great content is of little value if no one uses it and knowing more about users and their needs leads to more relevant content. So, we need to ask ourselves: "Who exactly is using this stuff, anyway?" Since 2010, Utah State University has begun surveying its IR users to answer this question. DigitalCommons@USU houses more than 26,000 documents with full-text downloads of over 800,000. With this much …

Presentation given at the 2009 LITA National Forum in Salt Lake City, Utah on archiving OpenCourseWare in the Institutional Repository.

The main function of OpenCourseWare is to provide open access to collections of educational materials used in formal courses. The main function of an Institutional Repository is to collect, preserve, and disseminate intellectual output of an institution. Since OCW is a significant portion of the intellectual output of a university, archiving OCW in an institutions repository seems a perfect marriage of means and opportunity.
