This presentation provides insight into a new hybrid, service-learning course introduced at Austin Peay State University entitled “Foundations of Minority Leadership”. With respect to leadership, individuals who are minorities often face difficulties that the majority does not have to consider. As a result, minority individuals often do not have the opportunity to address issues that would be beneficial for their mentoring/leadership needs. This presentation will highlight the structure of a course specifically for minority individuals. It will also provide some examples of how two instructors use contemporary readings such as, “Minority Leader: How to Lead From the Outside and Make …

Dyslexie is a font type that was created specifically to address the challenges that individuals with Dyslexia face. This font-type consists of distinctive characteristics in each letter that are suggested to be more easily distinguishable from one another, such as a bolded bottom portion of each letter, additional inter-letter spacing, a greater x-height, and capitalized letters that are slightly italicized and bolded. Although the author claims that it improves the reading performance of individuals with Dyslexia, the literature on its effectiveness is conflicting. The current study investigates the effectiveness of Dyslexie compared to two commonly used fonts on readers’ comprehension …

Three Facets Of Employee Wellness: The Potential Moderating Influences Of Physical Activities, Mindfulness, And Vacation, Brittany N. Meier, Shahnaz Aziz Phd
River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference
Current research notes a disconnect between well-being programs offered by organizations and those most valued by employees (Agarwal, Bersin, Lahiri, Schwartz, & Violini, 2018). Thus, the current study attempts to better understand the potential influence of health-driven, leisure activities on three worker characteristics, namely, workaholism, work stress, and work engagement. With a greater understanding, we hope to emphasize the importance of comprehensive well-being programs for both employers and employees who may experience any of the aforementioned characteristics. To best assess potential components of a well-being program, three leisure activities of interest (i.e., physical activities, mindfulness, and vacation) were selected. These …

Celebration of Community Engagement
Trauma is an epidemic everywhere in the world, cutting across all demographics. Trauma occurs when a person experiences something that is perceived as physically or emotionally threatening, such as war, a natural disaster, divorce, or abuse. These experiences produce feelings of exceeding stress, terror, or helplessness, and these overwhelming circumstances can produce lasting effects upon the individual's mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health.
At the International Center for Trauma Education & Care, the main goal is to help facilitate long-term healing from trauma. We offer trauma-informed awareness, education, and tools to support healing in organizations, churches, and communities locally and …

Personal Standards But Not Maladaptive Evaluative Concerns Perfectionism Predict Exercise Dependency Over Time, Sarah E. Ernst, Irina A. Vanzhula, Cheri A. Levinson
Posters-at-the-Capitol
Exercise is generally thought to be beneficial for physical and mental health; however, when done in excess, exercise can lead to damaging physical, psychological, and social health consequences. This type of exercise is known as exercise dependency and is frequently associated with eating disorder pathology. Perfectionism (high or personal standards and maladaptive evaluative concerns) is a risk factor for eating disorders and is also associated with exercise dependency. However, no studies have examined longitudinal relationships between perfectionism and exercise dependency. The current study used a sample of adolescent females (N = 444) from a Southeastern United States high school, …

How News Media Coverage Of Crises Promotes Conspiracy Beliefs, Richard Kornrumpf, Adam Enders Phd
Posters-at-the-Capitol
While scholars of conspiracy theories have recently made great strides in understanding the basic nature and correlates of conspiratorial thinking, we still know little about how conspiracy beliefs are disseminated and communicated, especially when it comes to traditional media. In this instance, we use a unique experiment to investigate whether media coverage of mass shootings – complete with the uncertainty, conflicting reports, and dubious official narratives that characterize such coverage – provides the raw material for conspiracy theories and promotes conspiracy beliefs among viewers. We find that implicit conspiratorial information – that which causes confusion and foments uncertainty – does …

Water has been a lifeline of Indian agrarian society. The thriving agrarian economy requires water for irrigation and the need for resources to the evolution of indigenous technology through generations of communities. Kuhl irrigation system of Kangra is a community managed traditional irrigation systems found in western Himalayan. These are a centuries-old network of interconnected drainage channels that drain water from nearby khads (rivers) into the fields. The irrigation systems have codified customary laws, systems of collective action for maintenance and preservation and various traditional livelihoods.
Kuhls of Kangra is a unique case where the community is owned and managed …

Water has become a vital element in studying heritages, since researchers has realized that heritages are not only about sites per se, but also include multiple elements that reflect human social and cultural development along historical evolution, and water is one of the most important sector to study. To study authenticity of water, it is necessary to take interactions between human and water into consideration, and notice different interactions would result in different discussion on further water management and preservation, for water systems have been changed and reformed by human to adapt to environment and sustain future generations.

Apia has repeatedly been hit by floods exacerbated by climate change. Apia is the capital of the small island nation of Samoa, in the Pacific. The floods from three watersheds start high in the steep rural areas through which the streams traverse. The streams become rushing torrents, destroying the subsistence farms, soils, homes, crops and properties upstream. Downstream flooding impacts buildings, businesses and tourism in the small city as well as the ecology of the harbour, through repeated silt deposits.
A flood management project, which binds Fa’a Samoa, (Samoan cultural practices) to technical landscape management practice, can also lead to …

Technical Standards Literacy In Management Education, Heather A. Howard, Margaret Phillips
Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)
Industry standards have a significant impact on business as a means to eliminate waste, reduce costs, market products (e.g., for quality, safety, interoperability) and lessen liability (Thompson, 2011). Consequently, an understanding of and ability to use standards, agreed upon practices among interested or vested parties, is a critical workplace competency for those engaged in business and industry. To have a workforce competent in the use of standards, higher education curricula must be developed to integrate standards education at appropriate points within the curriculum. Despite the importance of standards, they are not universally integrated into the college and university curricula. Given …
Business Librarians Confronting Predatory Publishing, Marydee Ojala
Business Librarians Confronting Predatory Publishing, Marydee Ojala
Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)
Predatory publishing is a scourge on the information/library landscape. They waste time, spread spurious information, diminish the power of scholarly research, and damage reputations. Cabell’s lists over 12,000 titles in its Blacklist, most of them in the sciences. Should business librarians be concerned about predatory journals? How can we help our faculty and grad students avoid publishing in fake titles, dissuade them from accepting invitations to be on editorial boards of shoddy journals, and warn them about deceptive conferences?

I'Ll Take Business Databases For 500, Christine Kickels
Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)
Has your library struggled with how to roll out or sunset a new database? Ours has. We use emails, blog posts and peer to peer training, but haven't really been happy with the results. In a culture of assessment and gaming, it was time to try something else. This year we incorporated Quizizz and Kahoot into our rollouts with much success. I'll share our assessments as well as things we learned about the process.
A Lightning Introduction To Wrds, Ash Faulkner
A Lightning Introduction To Wrds, Ash Faulkner
Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)
Wharton Research Data Services (commonly known as 'WRDS') is an essential data platform on many university campuses with a research-intensive business program. The platform can host a wide range of data subscriptions including BoardEx, Compustat, CRSP, IBES, Option Metrics, Thompson Reuters data and much more. Often a WRDS subscription is funded through the business program, rather than through the library, but it is essential that business librarians are familiar with this source and if at all possible are able to access and efficiently work through some of the more common data pull requests. As data literacy becomes an increasingly important …

Mapping Il Skills To The Departmental Curriculum, Naomi Schemm
Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)
Problem: some departments use your services heavily for IL instruction, to the point that content gets repetitive for some students. Others use your instruction not at all. Other class visits are hit or miss, based on whether or not you have a relationship with that particular instructor. Attempted solution: mapping specific information literacy skills and database usage onto certain critical classes in a given major. The presenter is piloting this curriculum & IL-skills mapping with the Marketing department in summer 2019, and will give an update on her progress thus far.

When Databases Are No Longer An Option: Teaching Students About Open Access Resources For Business Information, Teresa Williams
When Databases Are No Longer An Option: Teaching Students About Open Access Resources For Business Information, Teresa Williams
Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)
Academic librarians spend a great deal of time teaching students how to use research databases to find business information, but the unfortunate reality is that students typically lose access to university subscription databases upon commencement. Without adequate training on reliable alternatives, new graduates can find themselves struggling to resolve their information needs as they transition into the business workplace.
To address this issue, the Business Librarian at Butler University Libraries created a Business Research Workshop (BRW) to teach students about open and public access resources for business information. What began a few years ago as a trial offering for five …
