Advertising And The Mortgage Crisis: A Content Analysis, Pamela Morris

School of Communication: Faculty Publications and Other Works

How do advertising messages differ in 2006 when the economy was on its way up, as compared to in 2009, just after a recession had been declared? This research focuses on the differences in newspaper advertising sponsored by financial institutions, from banks to investment companies. A content analysis of over 550 financial ads finds differences, in the number of ads and the content of ads. Findings should be of interest to academics, practitioners, and policymakers.

Where Justice Meets Compassion: A Christian Assessment Of Illegal Immigration, Kevin Twain Lowery, Courtney Fuqua

This presentation examines the multifaceted problems created by illegal immigration, both those impacting United States citizens and those encountered by the immigrants themselves. Two main areas of focus are the economic and sociological effects of illegal immigration. Although there are many injustices surrounding illegal immigration that need to be rectified, Christian ethics demands that compassion be given precedence. In the end, we identify key issues that need to be addressed for a holistic solution to be reached.

Land Use As It Relates To Land Slope, James D. Plourde, Bryan C. Pijanowski

The goal of this project is to analyze the relationship between the slope of land and agricultural land use. The output was analyzed to determine a threshold point at which agriculture practices drop off in relation to higher slope values. Slope of the land is important to agricultural practices because it impacts drainage and net crop primary production. Agricultural land was extracted from the 2001 National Land Cover Dataset using reclassification tools in ArcGIS 9.3. The slope of the contiguous United States was derived from the United States Geological Survey National Elevation Dataset by using the slope tool in the …

The purpose of the presentation was to demonstrate the importance and effectiveness of coaching leaders in today's global economy. Leadership coaching has the potential to co-create innovation in organizations of all sizes. Three case studies were shared. In each example, Dr. Connie presented the effectiveness of her coaching program. Each case study demonstrated the power of leadership and innovation on the economy, society and individual.

The Continuing Resources Team at Eastern Kentucky University Libraries has used a structured, collaborative process mapping approach to identify workflow problems and make improvements. We also identified better tools for sharing information that is needed by multiple staff members. Hong Kong Happiness Index 香港快樂指數調查

Lingnan University’s Centre for Public Policy Studies (CPPS) today announced survey findings of the “Hong Kong Happiness Index 2010”. According to the survey, Hong Kong people in 2010 continue to enjoy high levels of happiness similar to what they enjoyed in the previous year, with the overall happiness index at 70.1, not much different from the 2009 level of 70.6 and well above the trough of 67.2 seen in 2007.

The survey was conducted by CPPS from Oct 18 to Oct 22 2010 via randomized phone calls. The research team successfully interviewed 834 Hong Kong residents aged 21 or above. …

With a unique perspective from both professional and academic experiences, Dr. Morris’ research explores international advertising and how visuals can be read which highlight values found in different countries. Underlying social dimensions, that may otherwise go unnoticed because of their ”naturalness,” can be exposed.

Copyright law does not change often; the technology that allows us to use copyrighted works changes all the time. Faculty often assume fair use covers all use of copyrighted material in their classes (both face to face and online) and they become confused and frustrated when they learn of limitations in the electronic environment. Students rarely think about copyright; they are generally unaware of how their actions might infringe the rights of copyright holders or that they themselves might hold these rights in their own works. This workshop looks at two technologies that can be used to energize traditional poster and writing assignments to bring them beyond text: Glogster and Blogger. Both are free, easy to use websites with which students can create web pages with images, text, and audio to share with their classmates and the world. The acquisitions and continuing resources teams at EKU Libraries used the occasion of several library staff retirements as an opportunity to reevaluate departmental processes. In doing so, we solved two major problems: • We completely overhauled our Voyager ILS ledger structure to allow for more granular reporting, specifically in relation to electronic resources and online periodicals. • We developed a better understanding of the relationship between the acquisitions, serials check-in, and cataloging functions in Voyager, allowing us to develop more seamless workflows between the acquisitions and continuing resources teams and to do a large order record clean-up project.
