Information Literacy In The New Curriculum, Michiel Moll

South Africa has undergone major changes in the school curriculum. At the same time, international emphasis on the importance of Information Literacy has found reflections locally in many calls for the development of school libraries (e.g. Arnold, 2002: 178), but has remained a problem in the actual implementation. This is also reflected in initial teacher training which has moved Information Literacy to a skill of the teacher, rather than an essential part of the curriculum that they have to teach.
This paper first looks briefly at the changes in national curricula in South Africa, and then at the current curriculum, …

Google Earth Meets Higher Ed: Reflections On Neogeography, Cathy Moulder
Google Earth Meets Higher Ed: Reflections On Neogeography, Cathy Moulder
Cathy Moulder
Educators in many disciplines are embracing the wonders of Google Earth to engage their students. This session explains the context of change in education (Web 2.0 and the NetGen students) and how these two trends merge in a new area called Neogeography. The session presents preliminary findings of a research project to identify the early adoption of one Neogeography (Google Earth). Results show a developing use of Google Earth in course assignments at the college and university level, with several resources identified that will become available in summer 2008.

The Honourable Robert Edward Clifford (1767-1817): Maps And Mysteries, Cathy Moulder
Cathy Moulder
Robert Clifford was an Englishman, a renowned map collector – and probably a spy. He lived a quiet scholarly life in Paris during the French Revolution and early years of the Napoleonic era. But his correspondence with John Graves Simcoe reveals an exciting escape from France in 1803 with a trunk of secret maps and plans. Could the maps in McMaster University Library's collection have been part of that daring escape?

“‘Why Does Google Scholar Sometimes Ask For Money?’ Leveraging The Economics Of Information And Scholarly Communication Processes To Enrich Instruction.”, Scott A. Warren, Kim Duckett
Libraries' and Librarians' Publications
Librarians at North Carolina State University have developed useful techniques for enhancing information literacy instruction through the systematic incorporation of concepts pertaining to scholarly communication and the economics surrounding information. This presentation describes ways to leveraging such concepts as the Deep Web, Google Scholar, the nature of scholarly communication, and the inflated costs of journal subscriptions to contextualize hands-on instruction in the use of library resources. Assessment data from open-ended quizzes and surveys positively reflects students’ attitudes towards this instruction and exposes the impact of such instruction on student understanding about how research is made available on the Web.

The Effects Of Gender On Small Businesses: A Case Study Of Kasigau, Kenya, Leslie Abell, Jerry Daday
The Effects Of Gender On Small Businesses: A Case Study Of Kasigau, Kenya, Leslie Abell, Jerry Daday
Sociology Faculty Presentations
Small businesses are seen as an agent of economic growth in developing countries. Recently, the idea of micro-lending has received increased attention due to its promising effects on employment and personal economic growth in rural developing areas. However, we lack an in depth understanding of how male and female business owners differ.
In the summer of 2007, our research group from Western Kentucky University spent three and a half weeks in a small rural area of Kenya, Africa. This area called Kasigau was situated at the base of Mount Kasigau in eastern Kenya. During our time there, we surveyed the …

Phopshorylase kinase (PhK) is a hexadecameric holoenzyme made up of four different subunits in the arrangement (αβγδ)4 and has total molecular mass of 1.3MDa. Alpha and β are regulatory subunits, γ is catalytic, and δ is an intrinsic molecule of calmodulin. PhK is a serine threonine kinase with glycogenolytic regulatory functions. Our lab has recently discovered that the γ subunit can be alternatively processed to produce a truncated form of 181 residues (γ-181). This variant of γ contains a phosphorylation site for PK-C, and its activity is influenced by this phosphorylation. We are using a LexA based yeast two hybrid …

Admit it, we've all had students nod off during instruction sessions! The material we need to cover is essential to student learning, but difficult to present in an engaging manner. Effective use of multimedia means utilizing technology to supplement (but not replace!) good teaching practices. This presentation will look at how to incorporate some freely available multimedia sources into your instruction sessions and library web tutorials.
