As the landscape of e-book publishers, platforms, and acquisition models continues to shift and expand, librarians and staff working in collection development and acquisitions do their best to stay on top of ever-changing decision-points and workflows.

Collection assessments are conducted at the Houston Cole Library to ensure that current programs are supported adequately and to find out if materials are needed for newly added programs. They are conducted approximately every 5 years or sooner if needed for program reaccreditations.

Subject librarians prepare collection assessment reports using either a detailed long method with conspectus worksheets, or a short method with more numbers and less narrative. Ingredients are mixed together with the help of the technical services and acquisition departments to prepare needed data.

For libraries who embrace patron-driven acquisitions, the workflows of ILL, Acquisitions, and Collection Development are becoming more interdependent. Workflows that are traditionally siloed in different systems impede the efficient provision of library materials. The Getting It System Toolkit for ILLiad (http://www.gistlibrary.org/) provides an elegant solution to this problem.

Copyright Clearance Center's "Get it Now" service gives libraries the ability to provide immediate fulfillment of full-text articles from unsubscribed journals from over a dozen publishers. Eastern Kentucky University Libraries implemented "Get it Now" as a mediated ILL service starting in July of 2011. In this session, presenters discussed lessons learned during the implementation of the service, gave an overview of the fulfillment workflow, and outlined its successes and limitations.

With flat or declining budgets and rising prices, most libraries need to find new ways to provide access to the significant amount of content that our users need. Following a user-centered philosophy, Eastern Kentucky University Libraries have implemented several new approaches for acquiring print and electronic resources. Initiatives have included: Patron-driven eBook collections - both broad and subject-specific; article-level purchasing using Copyright Clearance Center’s Get it Now service; and ILL initiated collection development for print resources. Open Access resources (OA) are becoming more important in all types of libraries. Recent discussions on OA have focused on ILS access and availability of MARC records with little attention to a selection process for deciding whether or not to provide access to OA.

The presenters will outline some of the concerns with by-passing conscious selection, show how some services and systems are providing bibliographic access, offer information collected on the availability of finding aids for a group of OA titles, present selection criteria used by some database aggregators that include OA resources, and suggest possible selection process models.
