Warning! This Program Contains Graphic Content: Facilitating Understanding Of Library Terms Through Visual Rhetoric, Gayle Schaub, Vinicius Lima

Gayle Schaub

Building on recently published research, an academic librarian and art professor facilitate the design and creation of visual and text pieces that illustrate information literacy terms’ meanings. This informational campaign uses data from a large-scale assessment of student comprehension of terms used in library instruction and syllabi. It offers an innovative way to teach students the language they need to be effective researchers, while detailing a library-art department collaboration that gives students a real-world learning experience.

Partners In Teaching & Learning: Peer Research Tutors In The Library And Across Campus, Lisa A. Forrest

Lisa Forrest

Students can play a unique role in the development of information literacy skills among their peers. Hamilton College's Peer Research Tutor Program, established in the fall of 2014, provides peer-to-peer information literacy support reaching far beuond the walls of the library. Serving as "first-tier" support at the desk, Research Tutors also develop and deliver information literacy workshops, create new bridges between their fellow peers and liaison librarians, and serve as information literacy ambassadors across campus.

Organizational mergers between libraries and information technology services have become more common in recent years. From curbing administrative costs to improving communication to supporting student and faculty success, merged institutions cite a variety of reasons for joining forces. How do successfully merged library and IT services work? What are the challenges and opportunities for those leading within these organizations? What lessons can stand alone organizations glean from these unions? Presenters from four liberal arts institutions--Hamilton, Kenyon, Trinity, and Wellesley Colleges--will share a variety of perspectives and advice for those contemplating a merger or just looking to improve Library-IT relationships. Who Us?: A Government Documents Librarian And A Projects Specialist Collaborate On Establishing An Institutional Repository, Karen Ramsden, Darren Sweeper

Karen Ramsden

This talk focuses on how a government documents librarian, with professional experience in social sciences and information literacy and a projects specialist with experience in fundraising and research were thrust into leadership roles for establishing an Institutional Repository at Montclair State University with no prior experience. Our seemingly unrelated backgrounds served us well to bring an essential and much needed service to our university. As “Agents of Change,” we will discuss the process involved for promoting the value of the Repository to administration, faculty and library staff through our own antidotes for success based on our extensive research and collaboration. …

Intersectionality And Development: Exploring Equity In All Dimensions, Renee Hatcher Dec 2016

Intersectionality And Development: Exploring Equity In All Dimensions, Renee Hatcher

Renee Hatcher

Equity is a word that gets thrown around often in economic development. Terms such as equitable development, regional equity, and equitable growth all too often become little more than rhetorical intent concerning development initiatives, as opposed to a principle of practice. Historically, women, the disabled, indigenous peoples, Blacks, and other people of color have meaningfully been left out of the development process. All the while, normative pro-growth economic development strategies have affected minority and marginalized communities differently, largely producing inequitable outcomes that shape the experiences and hardships of those outside of the towers of power. These burdens and hardships range …

Forget Gate Counts: Assessing Transformative Programming, John M. Jackson Nov 2016

Forget Gate Counts: Assessing Transformative Programming, John M. Jackson

John M. Jackson

One of the five strategic goals of the William H. Hannon Library is to contribute to “formative and transformative
education of the whole person through outreach and programming.” Through events such as the annual Haunting
of Hannon, the Hannon Human Library, and the Spring Women’s Voices series, the library outreach team at
Loyola Marymount University seeks to create experiences that reach beyond connecting students to information
resources and highlight the library as a transformative force in student life. Measuring the success of these
experiences requires targeted evaluation methods similar to those used for library instruction. This presentation
will outline the …

The Librarian's Survival Guide To The 'Big Deal': Tools For Unbundling, Leanne Olson, Alie Visser, Samuel Cassady, Doug Lynch

Leanne Olson

In 2016, the Canadian loonie fell to 77% of the U.S. dollar, creating unexpected financial challenges for collections management. Examining usage statistics was the clear first place to start when evaluating resources for cancellation - but would data-driven decisions based purely on cost per use be adequate?

In this joint presentation by Western University and EBSCO Information Services, we will look beyond cost per use, and focus on how Western built on the "big deal" analysis work initiated by the University de Montreal, adding a journal overlap analysis and home-grown method of performing citation analysis using Web of Science and …

Addressing Microaggressions: Transgressing The Line Between Professional And Social Activism, Karla Scott, Victoria Defrancisco, Maureen Ebben

Maureen Ebben

The focus of this workshop is the often overlooked day-to-day wearing down of people in oppressed groups as recipients of microaggressions. While most who are sympathetic to this problem know what a microaggression is, faculty, staff and students tend to fear addressing such aggressions. They simply may not know how to do so effectively. In this hands-on workshop participants will grapple with specific scenarios and be invited to try out different communicative responses and other tools to work toward creating a more inclusive climate for all. The workshop comes from an intersectional feminist perspective, shinning a light on oppressive behaviors …

Informed Learning, Information Literacy, And Scholarly Communication: Library Pedagogy As A Bridge To The Disciplines, Kim L. Ranger Oct 2016

Informed Learning, Information Literacy, And Scholarly Communication: Library Pedagogy As A Bridge To The Disciplines, Kim L. Ranger

Kim L. Ranger

This paper explores collaboration between librarians and faculty in higher education to construct connections between informed learning theory, information literacy practice, and disciplinary scholarly products to foster reflective and deep engagement with information.

Increasing digital innovations in communication and pedagogy, the need for various literacy capabilities, and the potential wisdom gained from considering diverse methodological perspectives have driven the need for interdisciplinary collaboration (Witt, 2012). There have also been several calls for a relational approach to teaching and learning, changing the roles of librarians (Farrell and Badke, 2015; Gunton et al, 2014; Jaguszewski and Williams, 2013), and scholarship which examines …

Managing Library Projects By Trello, Li Chen

The growth of projects in libraries is pervasive. No matter in public, academic, school and special libraries, librarians all have projects to manage. The complex library service and new technologies make the roles of librarian are leaning towards project management based work. How to keep track projects and complete them within the timeline?
