Gist: Joining Ill, Acquisitions, And Collection Development At Eku, Kelly Smith
Gist: Joining Ill, Acquisitions, And Collection Development At Eku, Kelly Smith

For libraries who embrace patron-driven acquisitions, the workflows of ILL, Acquisitions, and Collection Development are becoming more interdependent. Workflows that are traditionally siloed in different systems impede the efficient provision of library materials. The Getting It System Toolkit for ILLiad (http://www.gistlibrary.org/) provides an elegant solution to this problem.
Ccc’S Get It Now Service As A Collection Development Strategy, Kelly Smith, Pat New
Ccc’S Get It Now Service As A Collection Development Strategy, Kelly Smith, Pat New

Copyright Clearance Center's "Get it Now" service gives libraries the ability to provide immediate fulfillment of full-text articles from unsubscribed journals from over a dozen publishers. Eastern Kentucky University Libraries implemented "Get it Now" as a mediated ILL service starting in July of 2011. In this session, presenters discussed lessons learned during the implementation of the service, gave an overview of the fulfillment workflow, and outlined its successes and limitations.

User-Focused Acquisitions Strategies: Developing Collections For The 21st Century, Kelly Smith

With flat or declining budgets and rising prices, most libraries need to find new ways to provide access to the significant amount of content that our users need. Following a user-centered philosophy, Eastern Kentucky University Libraries have implemented several new approaches for acquiring print and electronic resources. Initiatives have included: Patron-driven eBook collections - both broad and subject-specific; article-level purchasing using Copyright Clearance Center’s Get it Now service; and ILL initiated collection development for print resources. The presenter described each initiative and discussed their effect on the budget, the usage of resources, and workflow processes. Future implications for organization and …
Using Process Mapping To Assess And Improve Eresource Workflow, Kelly Smith
Using Process Mapping To Assess And Improve Eresource Workflow, Kelly Smith

The Continuing Resources Team at Eastern Kentucky University Libraries has used a structured, collaborative process mapping approach to identify workflow problems and make improvements. We also identified better tools for sharing information that is needed by multiple staff members. Co-presented at the 2010 Charleston Confernece as part of the "Innovative Practices in Electronic Resources and Acquisition Management" preconference workshop.

The acquisitions and continuing resources teams at EKU Libraries used the occasion of several library staff retirements as an opportunity to reevaluate departmental processes. In doing so, we solved two major problems: • We completely overhauled our Voyager ILS ledger structure to allow for more granular reporting, specifically in relation to electronic resources and online periodicals. • We developed a better understanding of the relationship between the acquisitions, serials check-in, and cataloging functions in Voyager, allowing us to develop more seamless workflows between the acquisitions and continuing resources teams and to do a large order record clean-up project.
Creative Solutions For Managing Eresources Workflow, Kelly Smith, Laura Edwards
Creative Solutions For Managing Eresources Workflow, Kelly Smith, Laura Edwards

As the number of eResources we acquire continues to grow, Eastern Kentucky University Libraries have attempted to develop more effective ways to manage our online collections. Traditional methods for dealing with print resources do not apply to the entire eResources lifecycle, and we have been challenged to think creatively about possible solutions. Our strategies have included adjusting the staffing model of the eResources team, analyzing our workflow using process mapping to identify areas of improvement, and finding appropriate ways to incorporate support staff into the eResources workflow.

Nextgen Acquisitions: A Paradigm Shift For A New Era, Kelly Smith, Kathryn Harnish

Current integrated library systems traditionally combine both user discovery and inventory management applications, merging very different functional needs into a single environment. As libraries look to the future, our service platforms must evolve in a way that enables both more efficient management and more effective presentation of a wide array of library resources. For many libraries, the first step in the process has been to decouple the user discovery and delivery environment, separating the needs for patron presentation from the requirements for back-office management. In this way, libraries have attempted to improve the enduser experience.
This presentation examines how new …

The Inexorable March To Online-Only Journal Subscriptions, Kelly Smith, Patricia Thompson

There is not a “one size fits all” approach to shifting journal collections from print to online only, nor are there existing “best practices” for tackling this problem. This presentation addresses criteria used by different libraries, complications experienced, and strategies employed.

Representing Ejournals In The Library Catalog, Kelly Smith

Academic library catalogs as they currently exist are essentially static databases – they are searchable versions of card catalogs. Even the display in many systems resembles the old-fashioned card. By contrast, eJournals (and websites and eBooks, for that matter) contain dynamic information. URLs change, platforms change, vendors change, the same title is hosted on multiple changing platforms. Is it possible with today’s library catalog to effectively present metadata for online formats when each change must be input manually? Can the catalog truly represent a complete listing of our holdings in this dynamic and largely unstable electronic publishing model? This presentation …
