Data suggests that mental health disorders in college students are increasing. University personnel seek to help students better manage their mental health through access to campus counseling centers. Slow enrollment growth has placed pressure on university budgets making it difficult to fully fund counseling centers. Photo-voice is rapidly becoming a popular and accepted research method in the social sciences (Holm, 2008). Developed by Wang and Burris (1994), Photo-voice is a participatory method through which research participants identify and represent their lived experiences and contexts through the use of photo imagery. Reavey and Johnson (2013) claim that visual methods “hand over agency to the participants (p. 302).
