Promoting Discipline Specific Literacy For Law & Paralegal Studies Students: Libguides As Transitional & Professional Tools, Marissa Moran, Kimberly Abrams
Publications and Research
Developing LibGuides for Law and Paralegal Studies students at New York City College of Technology arose from the following question: how do we change the way legal studies students think of the Library as a resource to better assist them in their transition to college level-research and a future career as a paralegal. At the heart of this question is the importance of discipline-specific information literacy at the college and professional levels. Many students have difficulty with locating relevant information to complete course assignments partly because library resources are both fragmented and cohesive. Thus, while part of the transition to …

Reference Mode Preferences Of Community College And Four-Year College Students, John Carey, Ajatshatru Pathak
Publications and Research
Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the reference service mode preferences of community college (two-year) students and four-year college students.
Methods: The researchers administered a paper-based, face-to-face questionnaire at two institutions within the City University of New York system: Hunter College, a senior college, and Queensborough Community College, a two-year institution. During the summer of 2015, the researchers surveyed 79 participants, asking them to identify their most and least preferred medium for accessing library reference services.
Results: Nearly 75% of respondents expressed a preference for face-to-face reference, while only about 18% preferred remote reference services (online chat, …

Protecting Your Search Privacy: A Lesson Plan, Maria Bernhey
LACUNY Institute 2015
Each year search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo, complete trillions of search queries online. Students are especially dependent on these search tools because of their popularity, convenience and accessibility. However, what students are unaware of, by choice or naiveté is the amount of personal information that is collected during each search session, how that data is used and who is interested in their online behavior profile. Privacy policies are frequently updated in favor of the search companies but are lengthy and often are perused briefly or ignored entirely with little thought about how personal web habits are being exploited …

Problems With Authority, Meagan Lacy
Problems With Authority, Meagan Lacy
Open Educational Resources
These presentation materials were used to create an online tutorial for undergraduate students about how to evaluate the authority of an information source. It includes a PowerPoint presentation and lecture notes on an event-driven publication cycle and uses the death of pop star Michael Jackson as its primary example. This resource was designed with the Association of College & Research Libraries' Framework for Information Literacy (2015) in mind and addresses two of the threshold concepts that the Framework identifies: 1) "Authority is Constructed and Contextual," and 2) "Information Creation as a Process." These materials can be easily adapted for …
