Perceptual mapping is a modeling technique used in business to visually display relationships and perceptions of customers. In business, perceptual maps are often called product positioning maps. Conceptually, perceptual maps foster a better and deeper understanding of products and services in terms of public perception or actual outcomes. In short, marketers attempt to position products, product line, and brand or company type relative to their competition or competency. For counselors, this process facilitates open and honest discussion relative to personal expectations and goals. For the past few years, a federal grant sponsored by the Department of Justice has allowed teams consisting of faculty (from two-year and four-year colleges) and practitioners to assess the training curricula of various United States law enforcement and correctional agencies. Although traditional wisdom in academia is against viewing training academy courses as academically credible, the teams, after carefully assessing many training curricula, have agreed to give academic credit recommendation to those deserving curricula. This program and presentation addresses the use of factor analysis in program evaluation. Specific focus will highlight the development and selection of marker items. The goal is to label and interpret factors according to targeted questions of interest. Therefore, results are not only descriptive, but predictive - with practical application to student retention and satisfaction. Process is useful for benchmarking best practices; measuring student satisfaction and learning; tracking student participation; evaluating program results; determining future program or service needs; and, assessing effectiveness of delivered programs.

From Active Learning To Activity: Getting Beyond Busy Work And Into Deep Learning, Wendy Holliday

This session will report on an ethnographic study of an English composition class. The researcher observed the class for an entire semester and conducted focus groups and interviews with students and the instructor. The session will describe key activities from the class, including reflections on motivation and learning by both instructors and students. It will conclude with a discussion of how the research findings can help librarians design instruction that engages learners more deeply.

For counselors, the ecosystem is vast and encompassing; and professionals must understand the client in both context and time. This in and of itself is a daunting task; now, enter the New Millennium and on-line counseling. The Web is the poster child of interconnectivedness and interdependence of systems; however, is the Web bringing us closer or further apart? The Web is transforming society and potentially the ecological context of counseling. A review is necessary.

South Africa has undergone major changes in the school curriculum. At the same time, international emphasis on the importance of Information Literacy has found reflections locally in many calls for the development of school libraries (e.g. Arnold, 2002: 178), but has remained a problem in the actual implementation. This is also reflected in initial teacher training which has moved Information Literacy to a skill of the teacher, rather than an essential part of the curriculum that they have to teach.
