Students love doing hands-on work with multimedia – images, audio, video and Web sites. Unfortunately, software to do such work so can be costly and difficult to install. This hands-on presentation will show participants free tools for editing images, audio, video and Web site creation as well as how to incorporate them into their computer literacy courses. Most of the tools that will be shown are Web-based; students only need an Internet connection to use them. Since the session is short, hyperlinks to tutorial videos, sample assignments and grading rubrics will be made available to participants.

Recent lawsuits have focused attention on the importance of accessible online courses. Although often perceived as the role of the disability office, the responsibility for accessible online courses also falls on the shoulders of faculty and instructional designers. The creation of the course-embedded Critical Thinking & information Evaluation Module series resulted from the need for undergraduate students to start their academic careers with a framework for evaluating information. Pulling from the Paul-Elder Critical Thinking Framework and focusing abstract information literacy concepts on the commonly-used resources of Wikipedia, Google, and scholarly journal articles, the presenters will delve into module creation to implementation of these modules and discuss the logistics of this process to guide other faculty-librarian-instruction designer collaborations.

Institutionally licensed eBooks have not quite lived up to users’ needs and libraries’ expectations. Patrons accustomed to the ease of accessing eBooks purchased via commercial sites such as Amazon and Google Play are sometimes thrown for a loop when they encounter eBooks via the library’s site and the myriad restrictions that seem designed to turn users away. The search for alternatives to high priced textbooks endures. The librarians at the MGH Institute of Health Professions, with the help of an IMLS Sparks! Ignition grant, decided to jump into the fray by creating the Open Access Course Reserves. It is a publicly available, curated repository that provides ready-made reading lists of free, copyright compliant (open access when possible), educational materials. This poster will attempt to apply the techniques used in Queer Theory to explore library and information science’s use and misuse of library classification systems; and to examine how “queering” these philosophical categories can not only improve libraries, but also help change social constructs.

For millennia, philosophers, such as Plato and Aristotle, have used and expounded upon categories and systems of classification. Their purpose is to make research and the retrieval of information easier. Unfortunately, the rules used to categorize and catalog make information retrieval more challenging for some, due to social constructs such as heteronormality.

Over the past century, sociocultural and technological developments have fostered the emergence of what Peterson and Kern (1996) call “omnivorous” music listeners, as well as non-hierarchical forms of categorization like tagging. Despite such trends, genre remains the primary basis for ascertaining similarity in systems with musical content, metadata, or both. Furthermore, techniques employed within many recommender systems indirectly continue to reflect genre-based categorization and taste. This paper will provide an overview of the contexts in which such trends and tensions have emerged. Utah Valley University's George Sutherland Archives participated in a state-wide digitization project called Pioneers In Your Attic: Preserving the Legacy of the Overland Migration. Developed by Scott Eldredge of Brigham Young University, several university digitization centers, or hubs, collaborated with regional public libraries, museums, and historical societies to host "scanning events," inviting members of the public to bring unique, historic family photographs and documents, such as diaries, journals, letters, and business papers, to be scanned for free, and added to an openly accessible online digital collection called Pioneers In Your Attic.
