Innovation Und Intellektuelles Eigentum: Wer Nutzt Und Wem Nützen Softwarepatente?, Michael Friedewald, Knut Blind, Jakob Edler

Michael Friedewald

The Impact Of Information And Communication Technologies On The Electricity Consumption In Germany, Clemens Cremer, Barbara Schlomann, Michael Friedewald

Michael Friedewald

The importance of information and communication technologies in everyday life is increasing strongly. The growing penetration of PCs in households and offices and the almost ubiquitous use of mobile communication devices are vivid examples for this development.

The key drivers influencing the penetration, usage patterns and specific energy consumption of IC-equipment were examined and a bottom-up analysis of the direct energy consumption of ICT-equipment in households and offices was made for 2001 resulting an energy demand of 38 TWh. In addition, projections for the years 2005 and 2010 were developed based on the base year consumption and the key driving …

Information, Institutions And Governance: Advancing A Basic Social Science Research Program For Digital Government, Jane E. Fountain Jan 2003

Information, Institutions And Governance: Advancing A Basic Social Science Research Program For Digital Government, Jane E. Fountain

Jane E. Fountain

Throughout the globe, the sweep of information and communication technologies offers unprecedented opportunities for the advancement of governance and society. But information and communication technologies alone are inadequate to foster such benefits. An important, time-sensitive opportunity exists to make a major difference in the development of digital governance and society globally. An applied, rigorous research agenda would clarify for policymakers and the research community the costs and benefits of alternative future visions and paths. A solid research agenda, built through a global network of researchers, possesses the potential to forecast likely positive results and negative outcomes before government actions are …

Bohemian Faceted-Spheroidal Mold-Pressed Glass Bead Attributes: Hypothesized Terminus Post Quem Dates For The 19th Century, Lester A. Ross Jan 2003

Bohemian Faceted-Spheroidal Mold-Pressed Glass Bead Attributes: Hypothesized Terminus Post Quem Dates For The 19th Century, Lester A. Ross

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

Faceted-spheroidal mold-pressed beads have been manufactured in Bohemia since the 18th century. Evolution of manufacturing technology has resulted in the creation of bead attributes that can readily be observed on beads from archaeological contexts. Many North American archaeological sites contain examples of this bead type; but few reports have identified the attributes, much less recognized these beads as mold-pressed. Enough evidence now exists to suggest that some of these attributes have temporal significance for dating archaeological bead assemblages. Terminus post quem dates for faceted-spheroidal mold-pressed bead attributes are hypothesized, and a strategy for future research is suggested so that a …

Beads In The Straits Settlements: Trade And Domestic Demand, 1827-1937, Hwei-Fe'n Cheah Jan 2003

Beads In The Straits Settlements: Trade And Domestic Demand, 1827-1937, Hwei-Fe'n Cheah

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

Beads have long been a part of the exchange of goods in Southeast. Indo-Pacific beads were traded in Southeast Asia and colored beads from China were exchanged for spices and forest products from the Indonesian archipelago. The Straits Settlements, comprising the ports of Singapore, Malacca, and Penang, was formed in 1826, to consolidate the trading position of the British in Southeast Asia. Singapore, in particular, developed into a major entrepot of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Research by the late Peter Francis, Jr., drew attention to its role as a channel for a part of the Southeast Asian bead …

Early Upper Paleolithic Ornaments From Üçaǧizli Cave, Turkey, Mary C. Stiner, Steven L. Kuhn Jan 2003

Early Upper Paleolithic Ornaments From Üçaǧizli Cave, Turkey, Mary C. Stiner, Steven L. Kuhn

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

Beads and similar ornaments appear early in the archaeological record associated with modern humans (Homo sapiens), first in Africa and somewhat later in Eurasia. They are thought to be among the first indicators of human use of symbols. This paper discusses criteria used to distinguish early mollusk-shell beads from other kinds of shells in archaeological deposits, focusing on evidence from the site of Üçaǧizli Cave in Turkey. Upper Paleolithic beadmakers at this and other sites clearly preferred certain forms of shell for ornamental purposes, although the reasons for that selectivity remain obscure.

Birds, Beasts, And Botanicals: Organic Beads And Pendants From The Amazon Basin, Deborah G. Harding

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

The people of the Amazon Basin have an incredible array of organic materials available to them, which they use to make beads and pendants. The Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has extensive recent collections from the Amazon Basin, with hundreds of necklaces, belts, aprons, and ear and arm ornaments which contain beads made from organic materials. These collections are used to illustrate a variety of the beads and their materials.

Two Centuries Of Iroquois Beadwork, Dolores N. Elliott Jan 2003

Two Centuries Of Iroquois Beadwork, Dolores N. Elliott

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

To the 16th-century Iroquois living in what is now central New York state, European glass trade beads were something special; they were believed to have had magical and spiritual meaning. To this day, the Iroquois have a special relationship with glass beads. Iroquois artists began creating three-dimensional beaded items in the late 18th century. The first beaded pincushions and wall pockets were small, but they increased in size and quantity during the 19th century. Two centers of beadwork making arose: one around Niagara Falls in western New York and southern Ontario, and the other around Montreal in southern Quebec and …

Reducing Automobile Emissions In Southern California: The Dance Of Public Policies And Technological Fixes, Rudi Volti Jan 2003

Reducing Automobile Emissions In Southern California: The Dance Of Public Policies And Technological Fixes, Rudi Volti

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

For many years I have taught at a small liberal arts college in Southern California. When first-year students arrived at the college in the early 1970s, they settled into the usual things that occupy freshmen. A few weeks would go by, and then they would make a remarkable discovery: tall mountains would appear to the north as autumn weather dissipated the heavy blanket of smog that had obscured them. Today, the air is not perfectly clear in September, but students are aware of the mountains from the day they move into the dormitories. The region's partial victory over smog illustrates …

Generalized Metrics And Uniquely Determined Logic Programs, Pascal Hitzler, Anthony K. Seda Jan 2003

Generalized Metrics And Uniquely Determined Logic Programs, Pascal Hitzler, Anthony K. Seda

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

The introduction of negation into logic programming brings the benefit of enhanced syntax and expressibility, but creates some semantical problems. Specifically, certain operators which are monotonic in the absence of negation become non-monotonic when it is introduced, with the result that standard approaches to denotational semantics then become inapplicable. In this paper, we show how generalized metric spaces can be used to obtain fixed-point semantics for several classes of programs relative to the supported model semantics, and investigate relationships between the underlying spaces we employ. Our methods allow the analysis of classes of programs which include the acyclic, locally hierarchical, …

Formal Concept Analysis And Resolution On Algebraic Domains - Preliminary Report, Matthias Wendt, Pascal Hitzler Jan 2003

Formal Concept Analysis And Resolution On Algebraic Domains - Preliminary Report, Matthias Wendt, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

We relate two formerly independent areas: Formal concept analysis and logic of domains. We will establish a correspondence between contextual attribute logic on formal contexts resp. concept lattices and a clausal logic on coherent algebraic cpos. We show how to identify the notion of formal concept in the domain theoretic setting. In particular, we show that a special instance of the resolution rule from the domain logic coincides with the concept closure operator from formal concept analysis. The results shed light on the use of contexts and domains for knowledge representation and reasoning purposes.

Representations Of Cuntz-Pimsner Algebras, Neal J. Fowler, Paul S. Muhly, Iain Raeburn Jan 2003

Representations Of Cuntz-Pimsner Algebras, Neal J. Fowler, Paul S. Muhly, Iain Raeburn

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Let X be a Hilbert bimodule over a C * -algebra A. We analyse the structure of the associated Cuntz-Pimsner algebra X and related algebras using representation-theoretic methods. In particular, we study the ideals (I) in X induced by appropriately invariant ideals I in A, and identify the quotients X/(I) as relative Cuntz-Pimsner algebras of Muhly and Solel. We also prove a gauge-invariant uniqueness theorem for X, and investigate the relationship between X and an alternative model proposed by Doplicher, Pinzari and Zuccante.

Delta-Ferrite Recovery Structures In Low-Carbon Steels, Rian Dippenaar, Dominic Phelan Jan 2003

Delta-Ferrite Recovery Structures In Low-Carbon Steels, Rian Dippenaar, Dominic Phelan

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The development of delta-ferrite recovery substructures in low-carbon steels has been observed in-situ utilizing laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM). Well-developed sub-boundaries with interfacial energies much smaller than that of delta-ferrite grain boundaries formed following transformation from austenite to delta-ferrite on heating. It is proposed that transformation stresses associated with the austenite to delta-ferrite phase transformation generate dislocations that subsequently recover into sub-boundaries by a process of polygonization. Experimental evidence in support of this proposal was found in a ferritic stainless steel. Thermal cycling through the high-temperature delta-ferrite/austenite/delta-ferrite phase transformation leads to the development of a well-defined recovery substructure, which, in …

Chain Entanglements And Fracture Energy In Interfaces Between Immiscible Polymers, Leonardo Silvestri, Hugh Ralph Brown, Stefano Carra, Sergio Carra Jan 2003

Chain Entanglements And Fracture Energy In Interfaces Between Immiscible Polymers, Leonardo Silvestri, Hugh Ralph Brown, Stefano Carra, Sergio Carra

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

It is a very well-known experimental fact that the toughness of interfaces obtained by joining pairs of immiscible glassy polymers is strongly correlated to the interfacial width. Several models have been proposed in the literature to estimate the fracture energy of these interfaces, but the agreement displayed with the experimental data cannot be considered satisfactory. In this paper a new model is proposed for polymers with molecular weight higher than the critical value for the onset of entanglements. The model is based on a precise and realistic calculation of the areal density of entangled strands across the interface, that is …

Higher-Rank Graphs And Their C*-Algebras, Iain Raeburn, Aidan Sims, Trent Yeend Jan 2003

Higher-Rank Graphs And Their C*-Algebras, Iain Raeburn, Aidan Sims, Trent Yeend

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We consider the higher-rank graphs introduced by Kumjian and Pask as models for higher-rank Cuntz-Krieger algebras. We describe a variant of the Cuntz-Krieger relations which applies to graphs with sources, and describe a local convexity condition which characterises the higher-rank graphs that admit a nontrivial Cuntz-Krieger family. We then prove versions of the uniqueness theorems and classifications of ideals for the C*-algebras generated by Cuntz-Krieger families.

Detection Of Carbon Monoxide Within The Magellanic Bridge, E Muller, L Staveley-Smith, William Zealey Jan 2003

Detection Of Carbon Monoxide Within The Magellanic Bridge, E Muller, L Staveley-Smith, William Zealey

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The Mopra 22-m and SEST 15-m telescopes have been used to detect and partially map a region of 12CO(1-0) line emission within the Magellanic Bridge, a region lying between the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC, respectively). The emission appears to be embedded in a cloud of neutral hydrogen, and is in the vicinity of an IRAS source. The CO emission region is found to have a 60 μm/100 μm flux density ratio typical for 12CO(1-0) detections within the SMC, although it has a significantly lower 12CO brightness and velocity width. These suggest that the …

Countably Generated Hilbert Modules, The Kasparov Stabilisation Theorem, And Frames In Hilbert Modules, Iain Raeburn, Shaun J. Thompson

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We consider a class of countably generated Hilbert modules in which the generators are multipliers of the module, and prove a version of the Kasparov Stabilisation Theorem for these modules. We then extend recent work of Frank and Larson on frames in Hilbert modules.

Issues For Connection Of Distributed Generation In Rural/Remote Power Systems, Kashem M. Muttaqi, Gerard Ledwich, Michael Negnevitsky Jan 2003

Issues For Connection Of Distributed Generation In Rural/Remote Power Systems, Kashem M. Muttaqi, Gerard Ledwich, Michael Negnevitsky

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Connection of distributed generation (DG) into a distribution grid system affects the normal operation, control and protection of the distribution system. This paper addresses some of the technical issues arisen due to the addition of generation to a rural/remote distribution network. In this paper, a voltage controlled rotary DG is modelled to operate in the line of voltage sensitivity for maximum voltage improvement. A scenario-based study on DG operation and control has been conducted and recommendations for effective operation of DG presented. An investigation on barriers to inclusion of utility owned and customer owned DG has been carried out and …

Theoretical And Experimental Investigation Of Descending Salt Plumes From A Circular Source, Apichart Chaengbamrung, Paul Cooper, Peter W. Wypych, Ajit R. Godbole Jan 2003

Theoretical And Experimental Investigation Of Descending Salt Plumes From A Circular Source, Apichart Chaengbamrung, Paul Cooper, Peter W. Wypych, Ajit R. Godbole

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper describes work in the first part of an ongoing research programme on the generation and dispersion of fume from hot metal processes, a challenging industrial ventilation problem. This phase of the study involves research into a salt solution plume generated from an area source and descending into quiescent water. This is a 'cold flow' analogue of a thermal plume ascending in quiescent air. Experiments are described whereby the velocity and concentration profiles in the plume are determined using video footage and particle-tracking software, and a conductivity probe with digital traversing mechanism, respectively. Results from a transient numerical simulation …
