Socio-Philosophical Aspects Of The Senusite Movement In North Africa, Azam Mamurov
The Light of Islam
The great imam and reformer seyyid Muhammad bin ‘Ali al-Senusi was born in Algeria and is a direct descendant of the prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Received an excellent upbringing and education. He devoted all his knowledge and life experience to a noble cause: improving and reforming the hard and poor life of the simple Arab people. This is the period when European countries (France, Italy, etc.) began occupation actions against the underdeveloped Arab countries of North Africa. In 1830, the French captured Algeria - the homeland of Muhammad ‘Ali al-Senusi, and in 1881 the …

Formation Of A Class Of Local Owners At The End Of Xix – The Beginnings Of The Xx Centuries In The Bukhara Emirate, Feruza Amonova
The Light of Islam
In article it is about formation of a layer of the local bourgeoisie and about activity of large owners in the Bukhara emirate of the end of XIX – the beginnings of the XX century. This article has the special importance because of it is writing on the basis of the comparative analysis of archival documents and historical researches.
The formation of local ownership in the Bukhara Emirate in the late 19th and early 20th centuries was largely dependent on economic and political factors in the region at that time. As a result of the establishment of the Russian empire’s …

Problems Of Regulation Of Secularism And Religious Principles In Arab Countries, Mukhammadolim Mukhammadsidiqov
The Light of Islam
The purpose of this article is to demonstrate that the wave of socio-political transformations that began in December 2010 in Tunisia and Algeria, called the «Arab Spring», was a phenomenon caused by a difficult internal situation, as well as internal and external factors that triggered these events.
The article examines the degree of influence of political Islam on the processes of modernization, geopolitics, as well as sociopolitical development, including the need to create a scientific basis for regulating religious relations in Arab African countries, which have become a source of instability. In this context, political processes in North Africa and …

The Light of Islam
In history and nowadays, in a constantly globalizing world, Islamic religion and medicine have provoked numerous heated debates, especially at critical moments in life and death, transplantation of human organs, abortion and other issues.
All Islamic law schools consider a woman’s life threat as an acceptable cause of abortion, and some allow abortion to preserve a woman’s health. Islam favors abortion under strict conditions, such as a risk to the mother’s life, a birth defect, and fetal deformity, or if pregnancy is the result of sin. Some ulema do not allow abortion to maintain a woman’s health.

The Light of Islam
Movarounnahr is a place of scholars who have made a significant contribution to the development of Islamic sciences. The works of Islamic doctrines, rights and morals, written by scholars from this country, are popular not only in the Muslim world, but throughout the world. Examples include works stored in libraries around the world and recognized as rare manuscript sources.
One of such scholars is Abul Qasim Nasiruddin Samarkand. He lived in Samarkand in the 11th and 12th centuries, and studied Islamic sciences, in particular the Quranic sciences, doctrines, jurisprudence, ethics, history and lexicon, and contributed greatly to the development of …

A bibliography of resources available through the Holy Cross Libraries which provide additional information related to "A New Way of Being Church: The Latin American Roots of Pope Francis Reforms," a lecture by Rafael Luciani. Luciani, a leading Latin American theologian and associate professor of the practice at the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry, discussed Pope Francis's Latin American theological vision and reported on how the Church moves forward in an economically and environmentally fragile part of the world.
The lecture was sponsored by the Rev. Michael C. McFarland, S.J. Center for Religion, Ethics and Culture, and was …

A Power Man’S Theology: Marvel’S Luke Cage And Black Liberation Theology, Diarron B. Morrison
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Netflix released Marvel’s Luke Cage in 2016 to critical acclaim. Born from a 1970s comic book, the series features Luke Cage, an African-American superhero. Cage is a big, bald, bulletproof black man. Instead of tights and a cape, Cage wears a hoodie calling the audience to remember Trayvon Martin and other victims of white racism. Theologian James Cone created Black Liberation Theology in the 1970s. As a result of Cone’s work, Black Liberation Theology addresses the issue of white racism from a theological standpoint. In this thesis I present a close reading of Marvel’s Luke Cage using Black Liberation Theology …

"Contextualized Digital Library Evaluation: The Perseus Digital Library Within Theological Research", Paul Hartog
The Christian Librarian
As the development of digital libraries increases, the growth has been accompanied by a refinement of evaluation criteria and methods. Evaluators are increasingly aware that the context of digital library usage (the social, cultural, academic, and institutional environments of the users) is an essential consideration of effective assessment. This article evaluates the Perseus Digital Library through the needs and objectives of a specific learning community – those engaged in theological research. After a review of relevant literature, a rationale is given for ranking ten key facets of digital library evaluation by order of importance. These criteria are then applied to …

Covenant Language In Biblical Religions And The Book Of Mormon, Noel B. Reynolds
Covenant Language In Biblical Religions And The Book Of Mormon, Noel B. Reynolds
Faculty Publications
In this essay I have tried to provide a broad survey of the concept of covenant for Latter-day Saint students of the Bible and the Book of Mormon. I began with a sketch of the history of covenant theology in the Christian tradition showing how the early New Testament idea of a baptismal covenant was soon replaced by the Christian institution of sacraments. Although the covenant idea played little role in the historical developments of Christian theology, it did resurge in the Reformation, but without widespread theological impact.
In contrast, over the last century, the role of the covenant idea …
The Language Of Repentance In The Book Of Mormon, Noel B. Reynolds
The Language Of Repentance In The Book Of Mormon, Noel B. Reynolds
Faculty Publications
Efforts to understand the doctrine of repentance in the Book of Mormon have long been hampered by linguistic considerations—and especially the traditional translation provided in the King James Version of the Bible. Twentieth century studies provide a needed correction to this situation and open a wealth of potential new understandings of Book of Mormon discourse on repentance. Further, the discovery that the Book of Mormon uses the common biblical figure of speech of hendiadys repeatedly to expand and enrich the concept of repentance beyond biblical usage helps readers appreciate the ways in which repentance can be seen as the most …
Faith And Faithfulness In The Book Of Mormon, Noel B. Reynolds
Faith And Faithfulness In The Book Of Mormon, Noel B. Reynolds
Faculty Publications
The concept of covenantal faithfulness toward Yahweh that Old Testament scholars have recognized and defined over the last century turns out to be a far better account of the Book of Mormon understanding of faith in the Lord, in Jesus Christ, than are any of the competing concepts of faith that have grown out of the Christian tradition over the last two millennia. For the Nephite prophets, faith was an active concept, better understood as faithfulness—as diligent obedience to the commandments the Lord has given to those who have accepted the gospel covenant through repentance and baptism. The divine …

Data And Identity: Notes Toward A Theology Of The Digitally Enhanced Self, Michael Paulus
Data And Identity: Notes Toward A Theology Of The Digitally Enhanced Self, Michael Paulus
SPU Works
In the HBO-BBC miniseries "Years and Years," a teenager named Bethany (!) comes out as transhuman and tells her parents she wants to “live forever as information ... [to] be data!” As information about us increasingly takes the form of digital data, we are all of us becoming data. Indeed, so much of our attention and agency is engaged with digital information in digital environments that the philosopher Luciano Floridi describes us as “inforgs” living “onlife” in an “infosphere.” Through nearly constant and ubiquitous patterns of digital interactions with human and artificial agents, we are creating digitally extended and enhanced …

Healing For All Races: Oral Roberts’ Legacy Of Racial Reconciliation In A Divided City, Daniel D. Isgrigg
Healing For All Races: Oral Roberts’ Legacy Of Racial Reconciliation In A Divided City, Daniel D. Isgrigg
Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology
This article explores Oral Roberts’ legacy of racial reconciliation in the backdrop of the racial history of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Oral Roberts was a pioneer of racial integration of his meetings during the Healing Revival of the 1950s. But his racial vision came to maturity as Oral Roberts University became a center for social uplift for African Americans in the Spirit-empowered movement. Today, that legacy continues to shape Oral Roberts University as a shining example of racial diversity among Christian universities in America.

The Next Page Of Yoga Anatomy: An Anatomical Lens On Selected Yoga Asanas, Viana Chau
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Yoga has become a widely-recognized form of physical activity as well as an effective therapeutic intervention. It is a self-discipling way of life, taking advantage of the powerful effects from the combination of breathing exercises (pranayama), physical postures (asanas), and meditation on calming the nervous system and balancing the mind, body, and spirit. However, over time, the contemporary definition of yoga, especially in the United States, has decreased the emphasis on the religious spirituality component and increased the emphasis on physical activity. Although one may argue that this is not the traditional yoga, this change not only breaks down the …

The Promises And Perils Of Radio As A Medium Of Faith In A Q’Eqchi’-Maya Catholic Community, Eric Hoenes Del Pinal
The Promises And Perils Of Radio As A Medium Of Faith In A Q’Eqchi’-Maya Catholic Community, Eric Hoenes Del Pinal
Journal of Global Catholicism
Because their parish is large, dispersed, and overwhelmingly rural, FM radio is one of the few reliable means through which the Q’eqchi’-Maya Catholics of San Felipe in Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, can communicate with each other en masse. Yet, because it is a one-way medium, it is also impossible to gauge how its intended audience is responding, or if is even there to receive broadcasted messages. Drawing on ethnographic material collected in 2005 (on the use of radio broadcasting to call together ritual participants) and 2016 (on an ultimately failed attempt to launch a radio station to serve rural parishioners), …

Technologizing The Divine, Peter Mclaren
Technologizing The Divine, Peter Mclaren
Education Faculty Articles and Research
"Technology has helped us to define who we are as a species. But for all of its potential for good, it has wrought a malignant vengeance, calumniating the poor as disposable wastrels and inducing all but the owners of the means of production to endure many species of alienation. An intemperate obstacle arises when we attempt to technologize human spirituality."

Aimee Semple Mcpherson’S Pentecostalism, Darwinism, Eugenics, The Disenfranchised, And The Scopes Monkey Trial, Margaret English De Alminana
Selected Faculty Publications
This article posits that the cultural battle waged by Aimee Semple McPherson in concert with William Jennings Bryan over evolution and modernism was largely focused on a popular social theory linked to eugenics. On July 21, 1925, in the city of Dayton, Tennessee, a twentieth-century watershed event became a harbinger of the age: The State of Tennessee v. John Thomas Scopes, popularly known as the Scopes Monkey Trial. The public remembers the event as spotlighting the fundamentalist-modernist controversy with respect to the teaching of evolution in the public-school curriculum against the protests of fundamentalist Christians who advocated Creationism. The …

Review Of Essential Catholic Social Thought, William J. Collinge
Review Of Essential Catholic Social Thought, William J. Collinge
The Journal of Social Encounters
Bernard V. Brady titles his textbook Essential Catholic Social Thought to indicate that his focus extends beyond documents of the Church’s magisterium, usually designated “Catholic social teaching” (CST), but his emphasis is on those documents nonetheless. I will comment on this book from my perspective as a teacher for twenty years of a course called “Catholic Social Teaching.” My course is addressed to upper-level undergraduates in a Catholic university and specifically to those majoring in international studies (though it is open to others), but I hope these comments will be helpful to anyone who is considering Brady’s book for teaching …
