HOWARD J SHERMAN
Interview with Howard Sherman on Democratic Socialism, based on his book Reinventing Marxism. Interviewer Solveig Wilder comments: "If you're like me, you read a great deal searching for theories that you can apply to your activism. I recently discovered a book called, Reinventing Marxism, which succinctly covers so many of the questions that I've grappled with about Democratic Socialism. Extract:
Indonesia is reconstructing itself. Democracy has taken hold, a free press is working and the rule of law is gaining popularity. What about selfdetermination, human rights and the environment? Can Australia play a role in assisting those people and groups in Indonesia that can’t help themselves? Can Australia’s leaders help? To date, unfortunately, it can be argued that Australia has no statesmen (or stateswomen) only politicians! The character of a ‘statesperson’ sees them looking at the world in a proactive and thus inventive way which allows them to create circumstances and also to take advantage of opportunities. The reactionary …

This article explores the contributions to Canadian policy development and policy thought of three royal commissions of political-economic inquiry: the 1940 Royal Commission on Dominion-Provincial Relations; the 1958 Royal Commission on Canada's Economic Prospects; and the 1985 Royal Commission on the Economic Union and Development Prospects for Canada. Each commission is examined through tree areas of concern: The context for its appointment, the content of its report and the nature of its subsequent influence.
The Netherlands: Explaining The Limited Success Of The Extreme Right, Cas Mudde, Joop Van Holsteyn
The Netherlands: Explaining The Limited Success Of The Extreme Right, Cas Mudde, Joop Van Holsteyn
Cas Mudde
The third wave of right-wing extremism in West Europe, which started in the early 1980s (Von Beyme, 1988), did not pass the Netherlands by. This chapter deals with Dutch manifestation of extreme right parties, most notably its main representative, the Centrumdemocraten (Centre Democrats, CD). It presents a portrait of this party, describing its history, organization and ideology, and electorate, as well as a discussion of the reasons for its limited success compared to equivalent parties in countries like Austria, Belgium and France.

Explaining Different Paths Of Democratization: The Czech And Slovak Republics, Cas Mudde
Explaining Different Paths Of Democratization: The Czech And Slovak Republics, Cas Mudde
Cas Mudde
Since the ‘velvet split’ in January 1993, the Czech and Slovak Republics seem to have developed into completely different directions: towards a role model and a problematic case of post-communist democracy respectively. This supposedly sharp difference in development provides in itself a very interesting topic for study, but also makes for a very useful set-up to evaluate the many theories that have been offered to explain (un)successful processes of democratization in Eastern Europe. In this article, we compare the two countries in light of their degree of ‘democratic consolidation’, to establish in more detail in which way they actually differ. …

Piac És Igazságosság? (Market And Justice?), Attila Tanyi
Piac És Igazságosság? (Market And Justice?), Attila Tanyi
Attila Tanyi
The aim of the book is to uncover the relation between market and justice through the critical examination of the work of Friedrich Hayek. The book argues for the following thesis: the institution of free market is not the only candidate social system; substantial, not merely formal distributive justice must become the central virtue of our social institutions. Notwithstanding its achievements and virtues, the Hayekian theory makes a simple mistake by equivocating possible social systems, dividing them into two groups. One is the world of liberty and free market where people follow the general and abstract rules of conduct, accepting …
