The data shown in this fact sheet are drawn mainly from the 1993, 1998, 2003 and 2008/09 Kenya Demographic and Health Surveys (KDHS) as well as other secondary sources.

Kenya’s mothers are dying at an alarming rate: a woman giving birth in Kenya has a 1 in 38 chance of dying due to inadequate reproductive health services. In response, in 2014 Kenya’s First Lady Margaret Kenyatta launched the Beyond Zero campaign to create awareness and raise funds to tackle maternal mortality and morbidity and improve child health. This brief offers six policy and programmatic recommendations to address significant sexual and reproductive health challenges highlighted throughout the report. This research report presents a country profile of Kenya, and looks at differential access to and quality of family planning (FP) and abortion/post-abortion services to assess their current situation, as well the various financing and delivery mechanisms for these crucial services. Since 2000, Kenya has passed several new sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and population-related policies, including a new population and development policy that addresses rapid population growth. Despite widespread use, the majority of indicators proposed as measures of the quality of maternal health services have not been sufficiently validated. To accurately track progress toward national and global maternal health goals, the present study sought to validate and identify a set of maternal health indicators that can be practically applied in facility and population-based surveys. To evaluate indicators, the study employed a facility-based design. The study was conducted in public/government hospital facilities in Kenya and Mexico. People living with HIV (PLHIV) have a 20-fold higher risk of dying from tuberculosis (TB) than the general population. Reducing TB morbidity and mortality among PLHIV requires identifying those with active TB and treating them, as well as preventing new TB infections among those not infected. WHO recommends screening all HIV-infected patients for symptoms of active TB infection, testing those who show symptoms, treating those with positive TB tests, and providing isoniazid preventive therapy (IPT) for those who are either asymptomatic or whose TB test results are negative. This report contains information from a study implemented between August 2011 and July 2012 that sought to provide a comprehensive, evidence-based picture of the HIV-related issues facing young people across Africa, and the prevailing legal, policy, and programmatic responses. The study was designed to establish a basis for a sharper focus on youth within the response to HIV on the continent. Although Kenya has made significant progress in ensuring its citizens’ right to reproductive health, many Kenyans still lack access to or fail to use contraceptives, in part because of the lack of quality family planning (FP) services. Through the STEP UP research program, the African Population and Health Research Center developed a comprehensive country profile report that outlines the status, causes, and consequences of unintended pregnancy in Kenya. This report documents the living conditions and health risks of slum-dwellers across Nairobi’s informal settlements a decade after the Nairobi Cross-sectional Slums Survey (NCSS) of 2000. It aims to not only highlight the needs of slum-dwellers but also inform policymakers on the changes that have occurred in the living conditions of Nairobi’s urban poor since 2000, considering development interventions by the Government of Kenya and its development partners. The NCSS 2012 results highlight marked improvements in environmental, health, and educational indicators among slum dwellers. This qualitative study examined the challenges faced by adolescents in Kenya with regard to unintended pregnancies and how adolescents in urban slum settlements manage and cope with unintended pregnancies. The study’s findings suggest that high levels of unintended pregnancy among young people in Kenya’s urban slums are linked to myths and misconceptions about contraception. Other findings underscore the fact that many young people lack access to contraception and reproductive health services; indicate that unintended pregnancies are linked to sexual violence; and highlight the need for government to manage the high levels of school dropout as a result of an unintended …

No woman should be hit, yelled at, or abused in any way during childbirth. However, laboring women in Kenya and elsewhere may experience inhumane treatment in hospitals and clinics. This abuse is a key yet overlooked reason why only four in ten pregnant women in Kenya deliver at health facilities. To increase the number of women delivering in health facilities and thereby reduce maternal deaths, governments, health systems, and practitioners need sound evidence documenting the disrespect and abuse that women experience.
