Investing in textbook affordability can have a huge payoff for students—just ask Assistant Professors Alice Brawley Newlin and Marta Maras in the Management department. Their open, customized textbook for Statistical Methods (MGT 235) is completely free. It has been used by over 400 students and saved them an estimated $150,000! 2022 Gettysburg College Student Textbook And Course Materials Survey Executive Summary, Janelle Wertzberger, Mary R. Elmquist

In Fall 2022, Musselman Library conducted its second course materials survey, this time in collaboration with 10 other liberal arts colleges from around the country. The results from this new survey illuminate how students are affected by textbook and course material costs, how they cope with these costs, and how effects and behaviors have changed since our 2019 survey.
This report summarizes the background of the project, key findings, and recommendations.

Open educational resources (OER) offer flexibility and resiliency in any mode of instruction, while simultaneously reducing inequities among students. Faculty can employ other strategies to reduce student costs, as well. We’ve all heard stories of students struggling with textbook costs, but how do our students cope when the price gets too high? Modeled after the Student Textbook and Course Materials Survey conducted by Florida Virtual Campus, Musselman Library’s course materials survey sought to uncover how textbook costs impact the success of Gettysburg College students. Results give insight into participants’ perceptions of how much money they spend, the strategies they use to reduce costs, and the effects of the cost of course materials on their academic success.

Musselman Library’s strategic plan is designed to guide the library’s efforts for the next three years, 2020-2023. The library’s plan reflects Gettysburg College’s current strategic plan for 2016-2021 and grounds itself in our ongoing mission to support a liberal arts education at Gettysburg with the library as the intellectual center of campus.
The plan includes four strategic directions: support student success, design inspiring and accessible spaces, reimagine library collections, and cultivate an inclusive and responsive library climate.

In institutions that do not actively integrate DH into the curriculum, introducing undergraduates to DH tools and methods can be difficult. However, Gettysburg College has facilitated a summer research experience for undergraduates. This interactive workshop will introduce participants to the Digital Scholarship Summer Fellowship program and provide a high-level overview of its development and implementation. Workshop leaders will provide guidance on developing a summer program tailored to participants' institution's needs and aspirations. Participants will come away with strategies for identifying stakeholders and partners, developing program goals, selecting digital tools, designing workshops, and methods to incorporate aspects of assessment and sustainability.

Musselman Library’s Digital Scholarship Committee supports high-impact student projects that use digital tools and methods to interpret, analyze, and present humanistic research. In addition to facilitating an eight-week summer research fellowship, the Committee partners with faculty members to design and oversee digital projects introduced as course assignments. To expand the inclusivity and diversity of the library’s environment, Musselman Library offers a variety of training and educational opportunities for staff and student employees. Using a variety of formats and partnerships with other departments, these efforts have led to intentional changes in library space, services and equipment available, and hiring practices. Practical examples include highlighting events on campus, hosting short film and reading discussions, and utilizing campus speakers.

In the summer of 2016, Gettysburg College’s Musselman Library piloted the Digital Scholarship Summer Fellowship (DSSF), a library-led, student-centered introduction to digital scholarship. For 10 weeks, a cohort of three undergraduate student fellows were introduced to digital tools, project management, research skills, and the philosophy behind digital scholarship, with the culmination the creation and presentation of a digital scholarship project. While the DSSF program is a library initiative, it drew support from partners from across campus, leveraging instructional support and the experience of digital scholarship practitioners from multiple departments to implement a broad curriculum in digital scholarship. Peer learning services are an emerging trend in academic libraries of various sizes. These models allow students to engage and support the research needs of other students. These interactions may build off their classroom experiences and library training, while further developing their own research skills. One of the things that we celebrate here tonight at this reception is the strong relationship between faculty and students. The mentoring of student research and creative activity is so important here at Gettysburg—and it’s especially gratifying for faculty and students alike when that collaboration results in co-authored publications. But whether or not publication is an outcome, the opportunity for students to work closely with faculty is something that we offer in a way that not many colleges and universities do. During Open Education Week 2019, Musselman Library's Department of Scholarly Communications educated the campus community about issues of textbook affordability and about the development of Open Educational Resources. This poster provides basic information about what Open Education is and how it is a response to the high cost of course materials, which creates barriers for many students who cannot afford to purchase their books. Open Education seeks to create equitable access to all course materials and transform traditional ideas about pedagogy.
