For undergraduate and graduate students aiming to transition into formalized researcher roles, learning the steps of the publication process can be difficult and unclear. Even with sound advice from mentor faculty members, learning academic publishing practices many times relies heavily on word-of-mouth and unwritten rules.
Using a modified version of content submission and peer-review options within the institutional repository, Valparaiso University’s Christopher Center for Library and Information Resources (CCLIR) formed partnerships to teach these emerging scholars about the steps in the publication and conference presentation processes by mimicking professional submission and revision practices online. For smaller institutions, limited staffing, expertise, and content recruitment all threaten an IR’s success. Launched in 2011, ValpoScholar (scholar.valpo.edu) is on its second version of content recruitment and workflow design with a third version in beta. With a primary focus on capturing metadata before moving to full-text access and preservation, this evolving approach has led to a 25 percent increase in record creation, while also increasing full-text availability. This poster will share this changing process.

Many academic libraries have found opportunities to showcase unique content through conference-hosting services, such as website-hosting and conference proceeding publishing. This poster describes two libraries’ successful efforts to archive conference materials from an undergraduate research conference and a professional conference for scholars. Through the lens of these two case studies, the repository coordinators will discuss engaging with presenters on topics of author rights, ethical use of others’ work in their presentations, creating a sustainable infrastructure for continued growth of the conference, and collaborating with faculty.

The low level of research funding for the social sciences in the US is likely to have a direct and negative effect on researchers’ ability to pay the article processing charges associated with the most common Gold OA business model. But there are other options. Amy Atchison and Jonathan Bull look at the benefits of Green Open Access. Their research indicates self-archived/ Green OA articles, regardless of format, receive significantly higher citation counts than do non-OA articles from the same editions of the same major political science journals.

The digital revolution has made it easier for Political Scientists to share and access high-quality research online. However, many of these articles are stored in proprietary databases that some institutions cannot afford. High-quality, peer reviewed, top-tier journal articles that have been made open access (freely available online) should theoretically be more easily accessed and cited than articles of similar quality that are only available to paying customers. Purpose – In an educational world with increasing internationalization, digitization, assessment and financial justification, US institutions, especially academic libraries, must justify each new project. Institutional Repositories (IRs) are no exception. The authors attempt to identify factors that might affect the international usage of US IRs as part of assessment efforts to determine an IR's return-on-investment. Design/methodology/approach – A survey was disseminated to IR administrators asking for demographic information, international usage counts for website hits and downloads, and any internationalization efforts connected to the IR in order to determine any influencing factors on an IR's international usage. This workshop discusses various ways to directly engage student patrons for outreach and programming purposes, while eliminating post-secondary administration red-tape that could hinder establishment of this programming. The presenters illustrate ways to delegate to certain students creation and promotion of library-related content for consumption by the rest of the campus community. Successful Scholarly Communication At A Small University: Integration Of Education, Services, And An Institutional Repository At Valparaiso University, Jonathan Bull, Bradford Lee Eden

Beginning in 2011, the Christopher Center Library Services (CCLS) unit at Valparaiso University (VU) started implementing new scholarly communication services utilizing two different components: 1. the education and training of library staff in scholarly communication trends and issues; and 2. the implementation of ValpoScholar, VU’s institutional repository (IR) and its associated services. These components allowed for new skills to be developed, new services to be delivered and the library’s digital collections to grow with minimal impact to existing services. This model may provide a framework for other small institutions interested in adding scholarly communication services to their existing library services.

In Spring 2013, students in the Literary Editing and Publishing (English 380) class at Valparaiso University (Valpo) were asked to create a proposal for a literary review for which they would be the editorial board. This presentation will discuss the class assignment’s design, which the English faculty member and librarian co-authored, plus the various publishing concerns and problems that the class raised, what changes we might make in the future, as well as ask broader questions about how making the undergraduate student a publisher could drastically reframe scholarly communication instruction.
