We describe collaboration between a health promotion professor and librarian to design a course in the learning management system D2L that does not use a textbook. Instead of a textbook, materials from professional and governmental organizations, supplemented with library materials are used. This approach encourages critical thinking to integrate information from multiple sources. Students also become familiar with information sources they will use after graduation

Modern digital scholarship requires faculty to navigate an increasingly complex research and publication world. Liaison librarians are uniquely suited to assist faculty with scholarly communication needs, yet faculty do not identify the library as a provider of these services. Proactive promotion of scholarly communication services by librarians is needed. In this article, scholarly communication training developed for librarians at a mid-sized public university is described. Two surveys—describing faculty digital scholarship needs and librarian attitudes toward scholarly communication services—are presented. Articulating scholarly communication support as a core competency affirms the importance of this developing role for librarians.

This poster will highlight techniques for the visualization of scholarly impact data being used at a masters-granting public university for the purpose of outreach to faculty. We have built a scholarly communication support service through liaison librarians who are provided with scholarly communication professional development. PurposeThe purpose of this report is to explain the process of how Booth Library developed an online Wordpress blog in order to market physical and electronic resources in the library’s collection. This report looks at specific tools that are used to maintain the blog and sample topics that the blog covers.DesignWordPress software was installed on library servers, making the blog a cohesive part of the library’s website. Two and a half decades into the open access (OA) movement, rapid changes in scholarly communication are creating significant demands on scholars. Today’s scholars must wrestle with meeting funder mandates for providing public access to their research, managing and preserving raw data, establishing/publishing open access journals, understanding the difference between “green OA” and “gold OA,” navigating the complicated issues around copyright and intellectual property, avoiding potentially predatory publishers, adapting their tenure plans to OA, and discovering increasing amounts of OA resources for their research and their curricular materials. In the fall of 2013, the chair of Biological Sciences asked the IR librarian about digitizing the herbarium collection and including it in The Keep. More than halfway into the second decade of the 21st century, academic libraries are becoming more integrated in the scholarly life of their faculties than ever before. Important trends in scholarly communication, such as transitioning from subscription journals to open access journals, increasing amounts of “born digital” data and creative works, the growing importance of protecting one’s intellectual property rights, and keeping digital scholarship organized, managed, and preserved, are all areas where academic scholars and researchers require support services and assistance. Librarians are natural partners to provide these services.

In 2010, Booth Library began establishing an institutional repository, The Keep, an effort that involved multiple departments within the library. Potential content recruitment for the repository included large-scale digitization of archival materials and migration of previously created digital collections. Creation of the repository resulted in increased accessibility, better presentation of content that had existed on outmoded legacy web platforms, and the rescue of damaged content that had been disintegrating on other digital storage formats. For well over a century, American biologists have built collection of plants, animals, fungi, insects, and other natural materials. Often, these collections serve as a record of the unique biodiversity of the local area and provide a record of change over time. Many taxonomic, genetic, and environmental discoveries lay waiting in the drawers and cupboards in which these specimens are stored. / / Uploading images of natural history specimens to Digital Commons allows them to be easily discovered in with a web search, leading the user back to the home collection. Since 2008 EIU has been digitizing ETDs and making them available via the library catalog, I-Share (the state of IL consortia catalog), and WorldCat. It was only after ETDs were included in the institutional repository (The Keep) that the majority of faculty became fully aware of how accessible these theses had become. This dawning realization led to important conversations with faculty and other stakeholders about concerns regarding publishing, grant approval, and patents.
