Capturing Learning In The Library Commons: A Whiteboard Photo-Ethnographic Study, Uta Uta-Hussong-Christian, Rick A. Stoddart

Libraries are increasingly called upon to provide evidence of their contributions to, or impact on, student learning. Whiteboards, which fill many learning spaces, furnish evidence via student-generated visualizations. Librarians at Oregon State University undertook an exploratory, termlong, photo-ethnographic study to determine the types of visualization activities in which students engage to help them learn. Results show differences in visualization activities across discipline groups and suggest the need to design study spaces to accommodate those needs. This study serves as a model for those seeking to identify and convey ways in which learning spaces support and contribute to student learning.

Objective – This study aimed to identify assessment opportunities and stakeholder connections in an emerging technologies department. Such departments are often overlooked by traditional assessment measures because they do not appear to provide direct support for student learning. Methods – The study consisted of a content analysis of departmental records and of weekly activity journals which were completed by staff in the Emerging Technologies and Services department in a U.S. academic library. The findings were supported by interviews with team members to provide richer data. An evidence based framework was used to identify stakeholder interactions where impactful evidence might be …

Objective: An essential contributor to library value is found within library systems, web services, and emerging technologies departments. Often these areas of library services are overlooked by traditional assessment measures. Assessing the impact of units engaged in library instruction, reference, and circulation are relatively well established. However, library technology departments, who provide the backbone upon which these other units rest, are significantly more difficult to gather appropriate evidence, metrics and measures of importance. Many conversations surrounding the future of libraries suggest that libraries are going to be defined by their unique collections. Often these discussions center on the distinctive collections found within a library’s special collections. However the possibility exists that within our stacks there are many unique resources that are also worth valuing, holding on to, and promoting to patrons. In these times of re-prioritizing library shelving footprints in order to create new dynamic study and learning spaces, libraries might unintentionally be dismantling distinctive collections by looking at item level use. In February of 2013, the Oregon Library Association Executive Board approved the formation of the OLA Library Assessment Round Table (LART). This is an important first step in helping Oregon libraries continue to demonstrate impact and value to the communities they serve. As one OLA member noted in supporting the formation of this new round table, “assessment is becoming a critical component of our culture, people want to see the value of the investments they make, and assessment is one means through which people can see that.” A library assessment round table will provide a forum for Oregon librarians to …

How end-users and stakeholders value a digital collection is one of the most compelling questions in library assessment.This presentation reports on a series of interviews with stakeholders and potential end-users of the digital collection “Western Writers Series Digital Editions.” These interviews were undertaken to determine in what ways these digital humanities materials might be used by scholars and incorporated into their research process. Interview participants were identified through scholarly citations and works cited lists. This lightning talk will use the OSU Learning Goals for Graduates to highlight the learning narrative within libraries. Supplementing A Librarian's Information Literacy Toolkit With Textbooks: A Scan Of Basic Communication Course Texts, Melissa Kozel-Gain, Rick A. Stoddart

This inquiry subjectively examines selected basic communication textbooks for information literacy concepts from the communication discipline point of view. Librarians can build on these concepts in library skills instruction sessions for first-year communication students. This analysis reveals that communication textbook authors are addressing information literacy concepts and standards with content, exercises, examples, and, most importantly, context; and the authors are often utilizing their own discipline-specific terminology to do so. Because finding, using, and evaluating information is a cornerstone of communication education and because the most successful information literacy efforts result from learning its tenets in a variety of contexts, librarians …

This paper will examine how LIS schools prepare pre-service librarians to communicate with school principal/administrators the importance and implementation of Information & Communication-Technology (ICT) standards. A recent state-wide study has shown that many school principals/ administrators derive their understanding as to the role of school libraries/ librarians from three main sources: personal experience (84.7%), on-the-job experience (81.3%), and informal communication with school librarians (80.7%).1 Obviously, school librarian interaction with principals/administrators has large impact on an administrator’s viewpoint on school libraries’/librarians’ educational efficacy. Zines, loosely defined as self-published magazines, provide a cultural insight to the time in which they are published, making them a genre that libraries may want to consider collecting. Due to their ephemeral nature, however, they create collecting, cataloging, and preserving challenges to libraries. Few libraries across the country have met these challenges and maintain zine collections. Although no two libraries met the challenges in the same way, their unique approaches to zine collections may inspire other librarians to investigate the appropriateness and feasibility of zine collections
