Information Literacy In The New Core Curriculum, Elisa Slater Acosta Apr 2014

Information Literacy In The New Core Curriculum, Elisa Slater Acosta

Elisa Slater Acosta

Faculty and librarians at Loyola Marymount University (LMU) are partnering to embed important information literacy skills into the new core curriculum. Beginning fall 2013, every freshman at LMU will spend some mandatory time in their Freshman Seminar course developing basic information literacy skills. The same skills will be reinforced and enhanced in their Rhetorical Arts course the following semester. This will provide the foundation for students to later develop more advanced information literacy skills during a required course that has been “flagged” for information literacy at the upper level. This tiered and systematic approach will allow for a more consistent …

Should My Research Be Open Access? Perspectives From Gettysburg Faculty Authors, Janelle Wertzberger Feb 2014

Should My Research Be Open Access? Perspectives From Gettysburg Faculty Authors, Janelle Wertzberger

Janelle Wertzberger

Academia is abuzz about open access. The U.S. government has mandated that some federally-funded research be made freely available, faculty at various institutions have been adopting their own OA mandates, and some academic societies and their journals have adopted open access policies. Many Gettysburg College faculty are joining in the conversation—and taking action—by making traditionally-published scholarship available in our open access institutional repository, The Cupola, or publishing directly in open access journals. In this Friday Faculty Luncheon, Dan DeNicola, Darren Glass, and Julia Hendon will discuss their experiences with OA publishing and how it has impacted the reach of their …

This second Cookbook provides librarians with a variety of approaches to embedding instruction in courses and to assessing these activities. 55 recipes aimed at different audiences and for a wide variety of situations are presented. This volume builds on the ACRL 2011 publication Embedded Librarianship: Moving Beyond One-shot Instruction, also edited by Kaijsa Calkins and Cassandra Kvenild.

Careers In Music Librarianship Iii: Reality And Reinvention, Susannah Cleveland, Joe Clark Dec 2013

Careers In Music Librarianship Iii: Reality And Reinvention, Susannah Cleveland, Joe Clark

Susannah Cleveland

Music librarianship—a profession that brings joy and satisfaction to many—is subject to constant change that requires, in turn, continual adaptation from its practitioners so that they become comfortable with new technologies and formats, changing standards, and fresh approaches. Relevant and solid training and education are crucial to success in this field, but they alone are insufficient to guarantee placement or promotion. Recent economic shifts have created additional instability, leaving graduates from programs in librarianship sometimes unemployed and with little feedback about the quality of their experience and education while their employed counterparts likewise have little knowledge of their skills’ relevance …
