A Survey Of The Utilization Of The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's Guidelines For Playgrounds In Tennessee, Michael Alsup
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's A Handbook For Public Playground Safety was published in 1981 in response to a petition to develop a mandatory set of safety standards. The National Recreation and Park Association and the National Bureau of Standards were selected to work on the project. As the study developed, the Commission realized that a set of standards was needed instead of mandatory requirements.
Because there has not been any improvement in injury statistics nation-wide to date, the purpose of this study was to determine the degree of utilization of the guidelines in Tennessee. This was seen as …

Despite the injection of new taxes in the amount of $1 .2 billion in fiscal 1991, and recently announced cuts in the budget of approximately $464 million, the Commonwealth's fiscal condition - irrespective of the outcome of CLT's petition -is precarious. Although the political juices are flowing in Massachusetts, with an eye on November 6th, Massachusetts decision-makers have not faced up to the problems inherent in the long-term, structural spending patterns of the state's budget.
Our five-year budget projection indicates that if expenditure trends continue without dramatic restructuring - particularly in the "non-discretionary" accounts - the Commonwealth faces a steady …

The claim that the jury is a randomly chosen and representative sample of community is an important part of the ideology which currently underpins the institution. Supporters of the jury argue that both its impartiality and its independence from the State are bolstered by the fact that it represents a randomly selected cross-section of the populace. In most common law jurisdictions where the jury operates, various steps have been taken over recent years in order preserve and strengthen the perception of the jury as a "microcosm of democratic society". For example, in England the property qualification for jurors was removed …

This report from the United States (US) House Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs, dated July 30, 1990, was written to accompany US Senate Bill 1230 which proposes to expand the Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site in North Dakota by 465 acres to better represent the ancestral homelands of the Mandan and Hidatsa tribes. The proposed expansion included burial grounds. The big-business nature of college sports is becoming increasingly apparent. Each of the four schools with basketball teams in the 1990 "Final Four" received $1,430,000, while the 64 invited teams were guaranteed at least $286,000 each. On top of this, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) recently signed a $1 billion basketball deal with CBS television, ensuring that the take for individual schools will be greater in the future. College athletes are producing this revenue without remuneration other than their scholarships, which pale in comparison to the revenue they generate.
