4 Steps To Standards Integration, Vanessa Greenwood Nov 2006

4 Steps To Standards Integration, Vanessa Greenwood

School of Communication and Media Scholarship and Creative Works

It is too easy for teachers and library media specialists to entangle themselves in the multiple strands of standards: State core curriculum content standards, National Educational Technology Standards for Students (NETS.S), National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS.T), and the Information Literacy Standards (ALA). To prevent teachers from drowning professionally in this vast sea of accountability, the author presents an exercise that untangles the standards and helps teachers to align their teaching style with immediately accessible instructional technologies. This exercise is a useful anchor for inservice teachers and media specialists to experiment using new media technologies to support existing curriculum …

Integrating Student Information Competencies Into Library Services, Jeanne M. Brown

Library Faculty Publications

Many in the library field would argue that we have begun to perceive ourselves differently – especially in academic libraries. ALA’s Association of College and Research Libraries has been instrumental in creating or promoting a sea-change and much has gone into projecting an image of the librarian as an integral part of the educational enterprise. The message is that librarians are/ are becoming teachers.

Information-Seeking Behavior Of Faculty In One School Of Public Health, Lisa C. Wallis Sep 2006

Information-Seeking Behavior Of Faculty In One School Of Public Health, Lisa C. Wallis

Lisa C. Wallis, MSPH, MS

To date, a relatively small number of studies have examined the information needs and behaviors of public health practitioners, with most of the research funded by recent National Library of Medicine (NLM) and National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) initiatives [14]. One segment of the public health workforce whose information needs have not yet been examined is faculty members in schools of public health. Public health faculty are the teachers and mentors of many future public health practitioners and therefore have an opportunity to shape where and how the public health workforce seeks information. The …

E-Karaoke For Gender Empowerment, Payal Arora

Payal Arora

A folksongs karaoke product has been created to increase usage of subtitled media to enhance literacy and technology use, particularly among girls in rural India. This entails generating and proliferating popular local folksongs with social and cultural themes of interest to girls, accompanied by the award-winning Same Language Subtitling (SLS) feature. In this paper, the prime goal is to discuss possible implications of this novel technology content on girls’ socialization, education, and activism. Based on initial findings from a pilot test of this product in schools, private and public in rural India, I propose that this product has the potential …

Transforming Teachers Into Teacher Researchers: How To Become Information Literate Teacher Researchers And Model Information Literacy For Student Researchers, Susan Kendall, Mary Nino, Lorene Sisson

Faculty and Staff Publications

Information literacy is one of the major areas emphasized by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). According to NCATE, all candidates in school settings must be able to systematically integrate information literacy in Pre-K and K-12 school curriculum to assist student learning. The 21st century requires information literate teacher-researchers who are capable of meeting the standards set by the professional organizations such as (NCATE), the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) and the American Association of School Librarians (AASL). Teaching is no longer finite knowledge distributed by the teacher and returned upon demand. Critical thinking, …
