Digital Science: Electronic Association And Groupware In Facilitating Third Sector Research, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
In thinking about the application of computers and the internet technology to problems of association, collaboration and civil society we need to get beyond the current state of mimicking existing social processes and discover new ways to extend and enhance those social processes.

Information-Seeking Behavior Of Multicultural Students: A Case Study At San Jose State University, Mengxiong Liu, Bernice Redfern
Information-Seeking Behavior Of Multicultural Students: A Case Study At San Jose State University, Mengxiong Liu, Bernice Redfern
Faculty and Staff Publications
In 1995 a survey was conducted on the campus of San Jose State University where, for the first time, so-called minorities made up 50.7 percent of the total student population. Asian students compose the largest group among other ethnic groups. The study shows that students who use English as their primary language are usually more successful in using the library than those who use English as a second language. Length of stay in the United States also affects how often students use the library, as well as their behavior in asking reference questions. The survey found that Asian students are …

Helping Librarians To Encourage Critical Thinking Through Active Learning Techniques In Library Instruction, Cynthia Wright Swaine
Helping Librarians To Encourage Critical Thinking Through Active Learning Techniques In Library Instruction, Cynthia Wright Swaine
Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications
Encouraging librarians to incorporate critical thinking skills and active learning techniques in their course instruction requires more than talking about it in a department meeting or distributing articles on the topic. At Old Dominion University (Virginia), librarians have tried conducting workshops, had readily-accessible binders of articles and suggestions for librarians to consult, and held idea-sharing sessions. They have also tried including a related library instruction annual performance objective for each reference librarian involved in instruction. This paper describes this latest attempt to incorporate active learning in library instruction and includes an active learning planning sheet which serves as an outline …
Pathfinders On-Line: Adding Pathfinders To A Notis On-Line System, Harry D. Nuttall, Sonja L. Mcabee
Pathfinders On-Line: Adding Pathfinders To A Notis On-Line System, Harry D. Nuttall, Sonja L. Mcabee
Research, Publications & Creative Work
For decades, print pathfinders have complemented card catalogs and been useful reference tools. They're overlooked as components of on-line catalogs, even though they can extend the depth of the catalog. To encourage librarians to consider integrating pathfinders into on-line catalogs, the authors discuss problems in OPAC searching, describe the value and styles of pathfinders, and illustrate how to include them in a NOTIS system.
