Sprague Library Scholarship and Creative Works

Faculty Perceptions Of Students' Il Learning In First-Year Writing, Catherine Baird, Tiffany Soares Jul 2020

Faculty Perceptions Of Students' Il Learning In First-Year Writing, Catherine Baird, Tiffany Soares

Sprague Library Scholarship and Creative Works

The study investigates the perceptions of first-year writing faculty of how their students develop information literacy (IL). The authors conducted 16 semi-structured interviews and analyzed them using a qualitative inductive coding method. The study contributes a close and nuanced understanding of faculty perceptions of IL learning to a literature with few recent qualitative studies. Faculty identify what they see as enablers and barriers to student learning. The authors conclude that the empathetic, process-oriented characterization of IL learning by these faculty invites further examination using multiple methodologies and elevation of faculty's voice in the discourse around IL.

All Book Chapters by Montclair State University Authors

Many instruction librarians use the CRAAP test or a similar pneumonic tool as a regular activity in information literacy instruction classes. This involves having the students in the class select one or more sources and instructing them to answer a series of questions about these sources, as prompted by a simple checklist. Is the selected source Current, Relevant, Authoritative, Accurate and What is its Purpose? The goal is to help the students ascertain whether or not they should select this source and use it for an assignment. On occasion, a student will raise a hand and ask a simple question: …

This poster will describe how you can position your library as a catalyst in campus-wide partnerships. Stewart C. Baker posits the idea of using “Library” as a verb. Just as we “Google” when the need arises, our students, faculty, and staff need to know how to “Library.”We will describe how we made connections with a variety of campus offices responsible for student success, in particular, the Educational Opportunities Fund Program. By creating new pathways for librarian expertise and the promotion of resources, we introduced these student-focused academic units to “library-ing.” The goal was to enable our colleagues to provide excellent …

4 Steps To Standards Integration, Vanessa Greenwood

School of Communication and Media Scholarship and Creative Works

It is too easy for teachers and library media specialists to entangle themselves in the multiple strands of standards: State core curriculum content standards, National Educational Technology Standards for Students (NETS.S), National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS.T), and the Information Literacy Standards (ALA). To prevent teachers from drowning professionally in this vast sea of accountability, the author presents an exercise that untangles the standards and helps teachers to align their teaching style with immediately accessible instructional technologies. This exercise is a useful anchor for inservice teachers and media specialists to experiment using new media technologies to support existing curriculum …
