The Organization Of Schools As An Overlooked Source Of Underqualified Teaching, Richard Ingersoll
The Organization Of Schools As An Overlooked Source Of Underqualified Teaching, Richard Ingersoll
CPRE Policy Briefs
Behind the headlines about a looming and large teacher shortage lies another story, one that suggests the problem ought to be addressed within schools as much as by external solutions. The organization of schools and how teachers are used account for a great deal of the underqualified teaching in public schools. Most policy actions, however, stress improved recruitment, teacher training, and certification requirements as the best ways to assure qualified teaching in the nation’s schools.
This study focuses on one aspect of unequal distribution of quality teaching – out-of-field placement. In schools serving primarily low-income and/or minority students, out-of-field ...

Perceptions Of Artificial Turf Regarding The Effects Of Football Playing Surfaces On Injury Rates, James Hammond
Kinesiology, Sport Studies, and Physical Education Master’s Theses
The perceptions of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III college football coaches (based on their interactions with interscholastic and intercollegiate football players) regarding the effects of football playing surfaces on athlete injury was investigated. The subjects were all (237 total) NCAA Division III football coaches. Based on the existing literature and input from a panel of expert Division III coaches, a questionnaire was formed. Results showed that 48% of the coaches surveyed, strongly agreed or agreed that artificial turf poses a greater risk to injury than natural grass.

Effects Of Visual Impairment, Gender, And Age On Self-Determination Opportunities At Home, With Friends, With Health Care, At School, And In Physical Education, Barbara Lynn Robinson
Kinesiology, Sport Studies, and Physical Education Master’s Theses
Research on Self-Determination Theory has been conducted on many aspects of an individual's across the lifespan. Studies have researched the effects of self-determined behaviors on general education, athletic sport participation, and an individual's control of their own needs. However, few studies have been conducted on self-determination opportunities that are provided in physical education. Studies indicate an importance of self-determination in all aspects of ones life with regard to perceived competence, motivation, goal setting, choice making and achievement of positive outcomes. Few studies have been conducted regarding the effects of self-determination on the lives of individuals with visual impairment ...

Charter Schools And Accountability: An Evalution Of Nevada's Charter School Accountability Legislation, Sonya Douglass Horsford
Charter Schools And Accountability: An Evalution Of Nevada's Charter School Accountability Legislation, Sonya Douglass Horsford
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
America’s public education system has become one of the most hotly debated issues in the country. Poor student performance and failing schools have forced many to identify ways to reform the current system through measures such as school-based management, performancebased incentive programs and opportunities for parental choice. As a result, charter schools have become an increasingly popular alternative to traditional public schools. In addition, there have been many questions surrounding the “autonomy for accountability” tradeoff characteristic of the charter school concept. In an effort to contribute to the discussion of charter school accountability and efforts to hold charter schools ...

A Study Of The Leadership Preparedness Of U.S. Public University Chief Business Officers, Daniel J. Hurley
A Study Of The Leadership Preparedness Of U.S. Public University Chief Business Officers, Daniel J. Hurley
Dissertations
Despite the enormous role that Chief Business Officers (CBOs) play in administering the business and financial affairs of American public universities, little research has been conducted on their leadership preparedness. The primary objectives of this study were to assess the self-perceived preparedness of U.S. public university CBOs at the time they assumed their first position in the role, and to determine if specific factors could be associated with their overall preparedness.
With support from the National Association of College and University Business Officers, a survey was developed and mailed to the entire population of CBOs at four-year public universities ...
