Essays On Large Panel Data Models With Two-Way Heterogeneity, Yiren Wang May 2023

Essays On Large Panel Data Models With Two-Way Heterogeneity, Yiren Wang

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

This dissertation consists of two papers that contribute to the estimation and inference theory of the panel data models with two-way slope heterogeneity. The first paper considers the panel quantile regression model with slope heterogeneity along both individuals and time. By modelling this two-way heterogeneity with the low-rank slope matrix, the slope coefficient can be estimated via the nuclear norm regularization followed by sample-splitting, row- and column-wise quantile regression, and debiasing. The inferential theory for the final slope estimator along with its factor and factor loading is derived. Two specification tests are proposed: one tests whether the slope coefficient is …

Essays In Labor Economics And Panel Data Analysis, Evan S. Totty Aug 2016

Essays In Labor Economics And Panel Data Analysis, Evan S. Totty

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation is composed of three independent chapters. The first chapter studies the impact of minimum wage hikes on employment of low-skill workers in the United States. The second chapter studies the lasting impact of attending a higher value-added high school on college performance. The third chapter studies the impact of stuttering on labor market outcomes.

The first chapter resolves issues in the minimum wage-employment debate by using factor model econometric methods to address concerns related to unobserved heterogeneity. Recent work has shown that the negative effects of minimum wages on employment found using traditional methods are sensitive to the …

Testing Heterogeneity In Panel Data Models With Interactive Fixed Effects, Qihui Chen Jan 2011

Testing Heterogeneity In Panel Data Models With Interactive Fixed Effects, Qihui Chen

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

This paper proposes a test for the slope homogeneity in large dimensional panel data models with interactive fixed effects based on a measure of goodness-of-fit (R2). We first obtain, for each cross-sectional unit, the R2 from the time series regression of residuals on the constant and observable regressors and then construct the test statistic R2 as an equally weighted average of the cross-sectional R2's. 2 is close to 0 under the null hypothesis of homogenous slopes and deviates away from 0 otherwise. We show that after being appropriately centered and scaled, R2 …
