The Librarian/Lecturer: Successful Course Development Based On Km Principles, Stuart Basefsky
Stuart Basefsky
This presentation focuses on a highly successful and award winning course taught by a librarian/lecturer. It was specifically designed to serve the knowledge needs and aspirations of students, faculty, companies, publishers and the educational institution to which all these parties are connected. The unique manner in which the KM needs of the parties are met by establishing synergies is highlighted as well as how it is assessed.

Blogging the Library
The library has a significant amount of materials on-site. For pleasure or for simply completing assigned work, our library has the resources to help students and staff. The library continually has to keep updating its equipment and technical materials like CDs and IPADS. Otherwise, the technology would be outdated and less useful, if useful at all. [excerpt]

Also, more exciting things have happened! I've completed more of the Research 101 guide, and I'm pretty close to finishing it. I have to say it has been a lot of fun to look at what information is the most useful when doing research, and the best way to phrase the ideas so that it is helpful for students. I think casual but informative is working pretty well. Also, images are a great bonus. Too much text and the reader gets bogged down and it is hard to focus on the options let alone absorb the material. My intern supervisor …

Purdue University Research Repository: A Dataset Solution, Courtney E. Matthews
Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
The Purdue University Research Repository (PURR) is the free, online research data collaboration platform and data management service solution for Purdue researchers made possible through a partnership of the Purdue University Libraries, the Office of Vice-President Research, and Information Technology at Purdue. PURR provides researchers with a virtual project collaboration space, the ability to issue dataset publications with unique Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs), while meeting the challenges of dataset accessibility and preservation. In doing so PURR exemplifies the continued role of Libraries in the research life-cycle of the university by providing a tool and a suite of services that ensure …

A recent Government Accountability Office study stated that close to 40% of college students decide against buying textbooks. Rising textbook and tuition costs have created an economic crisis for students that has dramatic consequences for their success and ultimate retention and graduation rates. As a result, libraries and faculty are investigating how to incorporate library resources and open educational resources (OER) into required course materials. A new San Jose State University (SJSU) initiative known as “Affordable Learning $olutions” works to provide class resources for students by utilizing library owned electronic resources. This session will explain how the SJSU Library partnered …

Digitizing And Hosting Streaming Media Directly From Libraries, Cyrus Ford Zarganj
Library Faculty Presentations
The main objective of this poster is to show how libraries can provide an “online video library” to library users. Library users with a computer and an Internet connection can view videos through the library website. This poster also includes the technical aspects of making streaming videos available to library users.

Building Collections In Irs From External Data Sources, Sai Deng, Susan Matveyeva
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This presentation will address the experiments of building research publication collections from external data sources such as PubMed, IEEE Xplore and Web of Science in the DSpace based institutional repository (IR). To get data from other sources is an alternative way to develop collections for different disciplines since author self-deposit has not become a common practice for institutional repositories. This is also an effort in line with the current metadata cataloging trend of moving from item by item cataloging to batch processing of metadata, repurposing of metadata between different systems and communities, and providing value-added data services to students and …

Science And Technology Resources On The Internet: Biodiversity Web Resources, John Creech
Science And Technology Resources On The Internet: Biodiversity Web Resources, John Creech
Library Scholarship
Biodiversity, a contraction of the phrase "biological diversity," was first used by Walter G. Rosen during a planning meeting for the 1986 National Forum on BioDiversity held in Washington, DC, while the first appearance of the word in the print literature likely occurred with the 1988 publication of the proceedings of this conference (Hawksworth 1995). The term "biodiversity" first appeared in the Biodiversity Web Resources http://www.istl.org/12-fall/internet.html 1 of 15 3/11/14 11:26 AM BIOSIS database in 1988 with four references, but by April of 1994 the count of citations had increased to 888 (Hawksworth 1995).

Blogging the Library
As promised, I'm going to tell you about what the library is doing for Banned Books Week! I have had a lot of fun planning it. First of all, we're going to have pins with book covers on them so that students can show off their favorite banned book. There will also be snacks, and a comment box where they can write their feelings on censorship which will be posted on Facebook and Twitter, hopefully every day but it depends on how many responses we get. I'm also making up signs so that students can see the title and then …

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
The Purdue University Research Repository (PURR, http://research.hub.purdue.edu) uses HUBzero to provide a research collaboration and data management solution for campus researchers. The National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and other funding agencies have begun requiring that researchers describe in their grant proposals how they will manage and share the data that will be produced in their research. Purdue researchers can include PURR in their data management plans, invite collaborators to work with them in a private projects on PURR, and publish datasets that can be cited using Digital Object Identifiers (DOI). This presentation will explore Purdue’s data …

Well, here we are: my last day of summer internship. I am quite proud of what I accomplished this summer, although I had hoped to be just a little bit farther on the cataloging. Oh, well. It’s not like the books are going anywhere, right? And I’m not going anywhere, either, so hopefully I can finish the cataloging over the course of the fall semester, and continue to add to my LibGuide. [excerpt]

I’m a rather hands-on type of learner, so I decided that the best way to go about organizing the books by topic would be to do it by hand: print off my list of titles (I’m using the same list onto which I hand-copied the call numbers last week), cut each title out, and tape it to a giant piece of paper in the proper category. I acquired flip-chart-sized Post-It notes from the supply closet in the Reference office and affixed them to a rolling white board, one to each side. Each Post-It has three categories (so I have six …

Actually, I get to do the LGBTQ in religion topic, too. When I was about halfway through the list of call number ranges to search, I realized that there was way, way too much information for a single LibGuide. With just my initial list, I have 736 books (yes, I counted—I’ll explain why later) that concern more than one part of the LGBTQQAIetc. acronym. I discussed this problem with Jess, and I decided to make sub-categories within the LGBTQ guide, as I could see very clear categories forming just by looking at the titles on my list. Religion is one …

Technology used in teaching, learning, and research has created new challenges and opportunities for managers of college and university library media resource collections and services.
Moving images, sounds, and still images have become increasingly important in teaching, learning and research, and academic librarians are working closely with other agencies on campus to support faculty and student information needs. In some institutions, librarians have become true partners in the delivery of instruction, working with faculty, technologists, and instructional developers to create “new learning communities.”
Most academic libraries collect media, and these materials are as vital and diverse as any print collection …

Correcting Accidentals: Using An Availability Study To Identify And Resolve The "Suspensions" Impeding Access To Electronic Resources, Sanjeet Mann
Sanjeet Mann
This is the online, archived version of a poster I presented at the 27th Annual NASIG Conference in Nashville, TN on June 9, 2012. Availability studies are a time-honored method of diagnosing problems with library systems and services that have recently been applied to electronic resources management. This poster reports the results of an availability study conducted on electronic resource access during the 2011-2012 academic year at the University of Redlands in Southern California. The author used reference desk statistics to identify typical research topics in ten disciplines spanning the humanities, social sciences, and sciences, and used the topics to …
