The Effects Of Discipline Membership And Experience In The Field On Scholars’ Book And Journal Format Preferences, Ana Dubnjakovic

Using data from Ithaka S + R US Faculty Survey 2015, the current study examined the influence of disciplinary differences and experience levels as well as their interactions on scholars’ attitudes toward print and electronic materials. While results of 3 × 5 factorial ANOVA procedure indicated both disciplinary membership and experience played a role in scholars’ attitudes, effect size indicated disciplinary membership played a more crucial role. Significant findings include rising popularity of electronic formats across examined groups.

In 2018, SJSU Library completed a project to revamp our public dashboard, incorporating data visualization best practices using Tableau. This session will focus on the step-by-step process of implementing this project, from the first stages to a successful debut. After some preliminary research, we began by creating a prototype and gathering feedback from stakeholders. Next we cleaned and extracted our data from Alma Analytics and other sources. San Jose State University Library, along with all California State University (CSU) libraries, recently migrated to ExLibris’ Alma and Primo, going live with our unified CSU library system in 2017. One of our most anticipated Alma features is the ability to export invoices from Alma into the campus PeopleSoft financial systems (ERPs). A team of systems and acquisitions staff from several campuses developed an integration plan that could be adapted for use by all our CSU libraries. Several libraries have now successfully implemented this process, improving their invoice workflow efficiency.

Academic libraries are increasingly focused on the acquisition and expansion of circulating technology collections. These collections are often governed by auxiliary library services such as Access Services or IT departments and not considered as part of the general collection. Technology purchases are typically made with one-time-use funds and replacement is an ad-hoc process depending on budget availability. Deselection is a necessary but politically sensitive part of an academic librarian's responsibilities. To provide an overview of the emotional dynamics involved in weeding an academic collection, this article analyzes editorials, articles, and book chapters chronicling faculty response to weeding from a psycholinguistic viewpoint. Using computer-based text analysis, these accounts are examined for the amount and type of emotional content they contain. These findings provide a template for what librarians can expect when beginning a deselection process and point to best practices for working effectively with faculty to create a robust and healthy collection.

Objective – The purpose of this study is to explore collection development, cataloguing, processing, and circulation practices for tabletop game collections in libraries. This study used the term “tabletop games” to refer to the array of game styles that are played in real-world, social settings, such as board games, dice and card games, collectible card games, and role-playing games. “What do you value most about the library?” A single open-ended question on a recent San José State University survey of faculty and students revealed a world of difference between what these two groups want from a library. Students valued the library for the quiet space it offered. They commented less on the library collection and more on library services. Like most academic libraries, San José State University Library is struggling to meet users’ rising expectations for immediate information within the financial confines of a flat budget. To address acquisition of nonsubscribed article content, particularly outside of business hours, San José State University Library implemented Copyright Clearance Center’s Get It Now, a document delivery service. Three academic years of analyzed data, which involves more than 10,000 requests, and the subsequent collection development actions taken by the library will be discussed. The value and challenges of patron-driven, unmediated document delivery services in conjunction with traditional document delivery services will be considered.

Does ebrary work with screen readers? Can Wiley ebooks be downloaded? What ebook publishers allow printing? This poster offers a comparative evaluation of 16 major academic ebook platforms using criteria key to accessibility such as: text-to-speech options, text enlargement, full text searching, print capability and more. Results can be used to support and inform the decisions of acquisition departments and librarians when choosing what ebook packages to buy or promote to users. Since our presentations on ebook management at past IUGs, one lesson learned is that the process is always evolving. As our academic ebook collections increased in size and complexity, we then added patron driven ebook plans (PDAs,) consortia-wide programs, and migrated to Sierra. The result has been ongoing fine-tuning of our methods to handle record loads from various suppliers and duplication across multiple platforms. With increasing attention on ebooks at our campus, the process needs to be effective. This presentation will highlight the steps we developed, then updated for Sierra, to efficiently administer ebooks, ensuring dependable access for our users.

The continuing growth of ebook purchases through librarian selection and demand driven acquisitions (DDA) has resulted in an explosion of ebook platform usage. This paper presents the results of a comparative analysis done on the features, usability and accessibility of academic ebook platforms such as ebrary, EBL, Safari, Springer, and Wiley. This research was done across platforms (iOS, Windows, Android) and included testing with a variety of the most prominent accessible technologies.

A recent Government Accountability Office study stated that close to 40% of college students decide against buying textbooks. Rising textbook and tuition costs have created an economic crisis for students that has dramatic consequences for their success and ultimate retention and graduation rates. San José State University’s (SJSU) Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library implemented a patron-driven acquisition program on March 1, 2011 to make electronically available a wide collection of items without concurrency limits, meet users’ needs on a timely basis, and maximize the collections budget by purchasing materials as needed and selected by University users. In September 2011, SJSU’s Library implemented a simple widget that requested demographic data from its EBL users. Users identified their status (i.e., faculty, staff, or student) and area of discipline. In order to manage the increase in e-book purchases and variety of suppliers, the SJSU Technical Services Department developed an e-book workflow that modeled, where possible, our print acquisitions workflow. This session will present our current e-book workflow, our use of unique Millennium load tables, and our efforts to add e-book statistics and license agreements to Millennium’s ERM module.

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library in San Jose, California is a unique dual-use library serving the students of San Jose State University and the community of San Jose, California. The reference collections of the two libraries are merged and interfiled to promote ease of access for both populations served. Economies of scale were realized through collaborative collection development activities for major reference purchases between the two institutions. This article describes the planning and creation of the King Library's merged reference collection and reviews the literature of collaborative collection development and merged or interfiled collections.

This paper explores the issues in developing international children's library collections. Although promoting global awareness among children is no longer easily debatable, many libraries, big and small, rich and poor, are lagging behind when it comes to implementing the concept of having a collection of international children's literature. In addition, this paper suggests some strategies to diversify international children's collections by incorporating resources in variety of formats such as print, digital, and artifacts. Further, it lists some important resources for librarians to look at as they work towards developing their international children's library collections.
