How Will This Benefit You? Ethical Guidelines For Community Driven Archives, Kelley Flannery Rowan

Works of the FIU Libraries

This presentation was given at the Centre for Excellence on Empathy, Equity & Diversity's (CEEED) inaugural seminar, Making Empathy, Equity, and Diversity Relevant for Digital Ethics seminar. It provides a brief overview of how to develop an ethical foundation when working with historically marginalized communities in developing archives and digital collections.

An ethical approach to digital collections is essential for creating collections and partnerships that benefit and represent community members and the institution hosting the collection. While examples in this presentation are based on developing relationships with tribal nations, the same approach can be employed in working with all community …

Mdc Digital Commons - Building A Student-Centered Archive, Luis Berthin

Archives Day

Miami Dade College’s Digital Commons aims to be the embodiment of a student-first digital archival repository. Archives don’t tend to live at the forefront of student minds, but with the Digital Commons, we aim to include students in the archival process and give them a sense of agency and ownership in the project. The Digital Commons will exist as a database that students use for research, as well as support and help to continue growing as part of their scholastic careers.

The Digital Commons will be an open-access platform that collects, preserves, and makes accessible student undergraduate research and creative …

Changing Collaborative Practices: Striving For More Mindful And Balanced Partnerships, Jamie Rogers

Athenaeum: Scholarly Works of the FIU Libraries Faculty and Staff

Working with non-traditional partners on digitization initiatives can be full of challenges. Community partners may not have cataloging or metadata experience, they may lack funds for equipment or software necessary for digitization, they may be short staffed, and for a multitude of reasons getting buy-in for digitization projects may be difficult. As academic libraries, we often see our roles as facilitators and advisors, providing expertise where needed to help achieve the community’s digitization goals. Yet, how do we ensure collaborative efforts are beneficial for all parties? How do we ensure everyone has a seat at the table while balancing the …

The Dark Side Of Digitized Content: Stalking, Consent, And Subpoenas, Kelley F. Rowan, Rebecca Bakker Oct 2019

The Dark Side Of Digitized Content: Stalking, Consent, And Subpoenas, Kelley F. Rowan, Rebecca Bakker

Works of the FIU Libraries

Digital librarians work to balance the sometimes competing goals of stewardship and access all while being responsive to the needs of patrons, content owners, and creators. This presentation explores the often unforeseen challenges and issues that can arise with the creation and management of digital collections. While ingesting digitized works into a repository brings up ever-present concerns such as copyright, others challenges exist within the realm of privacy (stalking, harassment, digital anonymity), plagiarism, and ownership (false claims of ownership) that are almost always unexpected.

The goal is to further a discussion on these types of issues that digital librarians may …

We’Ve Come A Long Way (Baby)! Or Have We? Evolving Intellectual Freedom Issues In The Us And Florida, L. Bryan Cooper, A.D. Beman-Cavallaro

Works of the FIU Libraries

This paper analyzes a shifting landscape of intellectual freedom (IF) in and outside Florida for children, adolescents, teens and adults. National ideals stand in tension with local and state developments, as new threats are visible in historical, legal, and technological context. Examples include doctrinal shifts, legislative bills, electronic surveillance and recent attempts to censor books, classroom texts, and reading lists.

Privacy rights for minors in Florida are increasingly unstable. New assertions of parental rights are part of a larger conservative animus. Proponents of IF can identify a lessening of ideals and standards that began after doctrinal fruition in the 1960s …

Librarians Creating Connections: Reactions And Challenges To Open Access, Orcid, And The Embargo Option, Kelley F. Rowan Sep 2016

Librarians Creating Connections: Reactions And Challenges To Open Access, Orcid, And The Embargo Option, Kelley F. Rowan

Works of the FIU Libraries

This presentation explores the challenges that librarians and graduate schools face in encouraging open access behaviours. While librarians realize the benefits of open access research for both current students and society as a whole, many disparate factors often converge, causing academic departments to actively counteract open access research practices. We will discuss some of the challenges such as geographic location and social climate, the beliefs about publishing opportunities lost or gained by open access ETDs, and student beliefs about future profits and the actual statistics.

As the 4th largest university in the country and the 6th place leader …

The Persistence Of Open Access Electronic Journals, Elizabeth A. Lightfoot Jan 2016

The Persistence Of Open Access Electronic Journals, Elizabeth A. Lightfoot

Works of the FIU Libraries

Purpose – Open access (OA) electronic journals have been identified as potentially at risk of loss without more coordinated preservation efforts. The purpose of this paper is to test the current availability of OA electronic journals indexed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ).

Design/methodology/approach – Using publicly available journal metadata downloaded from DOAJ, individual journal URLs were tested for validity and accessibility using a Microsoft Excel Visual Basic for Applications macro.

Findings – Initial results showed 69.51% of the URLs tested returned a successful HTTP status code. The remainder of the URLs returned codes that indicated redirection or …

Linking Old Librarianship To New: Aligning 5-Steps Of The Innovator's Dna In Creating Thematic Discovery Systems For The Everglades, L. Bryan Cooper, Margarita Perez Martinez

Works of the FIU Libraries

This poster presentation from the May 2015 Florida Library Association Conference, along with the Everglades Explorer discovery portal at http://ee.fiu.edu, demonstrates how traditional bibliographic and curatorial principles can be applied to: 1) selection, cross-walking and aggregation of metadata linking end-users to wide-spread digital resources from multiple silos; 2) harvesting of select PDFs, HTML and media for web archiving and access; 3) selection of CMS domains, sub-domains and folders for targeted searching using an API.

Choosing content for this discovery portal is comparable to past scholarly practice of creating and publishing subject bibliographies, except metadata and data are housed in …

Olas: Online Library Acquisitions System, Rita M. Cauce

Works of the FIU Libraries

Having trouble finding an inquiring faculty’s request because it is not in your ILS? This is no longer an issue at Florida International University (FIU) Libraries since we created OLAS (Online Library Acquisitions System), an electronic system to gather, organize, and store incoming new material requests. The implementation of OLAS was a big step towards paperless acquisitions. This session will show the previous paper intensive acquisitions workflow, and the new streamlined electronic workflow. It will demonstrate the advantages of having acquisitions processes trackable at all times online, instead of buried in a paper file. In creating OLAS, my goal was …
