Demystifying The Microeconomic Foundation Of Economic Development In Nigeria: Evidence From Ease Of Doing Business Index, Imandojemu Kingsley

Bullion

The welfare of the citizenry in a modern economy depends critically on the state of the consumer behaviour of the household and the production decisions of business firms. Despite the efforts of the monetary authorities in supporting the micro-components of the economy and invariably improving the Ease of Doing Business in the country, very little has been done to evaluate their appropriateness in stimulating economic development. Against this backdrop, this paper critically examines the impact of supporting the microeconomic units on economic development in Nigeria.

An Evaluation Of Lfucg Economic Development: Making Strides Towards Strategic, Performance-Driven Partnerships, Sarah Ausmus Smith

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

Like many other municipal governments, Lexington utilizes a web of partnerships to support economic development. These relationships take many forms; LFUCG employs grants, tax incentives for businesses, and contracts with other organizations. Unlike some of its peers, though, LFUCG does not have a strategic plan in place to drive decision-making processes and sharpen its focus on outcomes. This report sets the foundation for future strategic management efforts by identifying opportunities and weaknesses that might be addressed by LFUCG through an environmental scan and establishing a performance management framework for existing contractual economic development partners. The key findings are as follows: …

Navigating The Life Cycle Of Trust In Developing Economies: One-Size Solutions Do Not Fit All, Laura Hartman, Julie Gedro, Courtney Masterson

Laura Hartman

Trust is critical to the development and maintenance of collaborative and cohesive relationships in societies, broadly, and in organizations, specifically. At the same time, trust is highly dependent on the social context in which it occurs. Unfortunately, existing research involving trust remains somewhat limited to a particular set of developed economies, providing a window to explore a culture's stage of economic development as a key contextual determinant of trust within organizations. In this article, we review the state of the scholarship on trust and identify those qualities of trust that are common in organizations at similar stages of economic development, …

Inclusive Business: Using For-Profit Business Models To Address Global Poverty, Samuel James Conner

Senior Honors Theses

Due to the rise of globalization, modernization, and the Internet revolution, awareness of global poverty has expanded, making its eradication a chief goal of the global development community for the twenty-first century. Though corporations are often expected to participate in social and community development initiatives without regard for profits, this paper presents inclusive business as a way for businesses to profitably engage impoverished segments of society. Inclusive businesses seek to expand their consumer bases or strengthen their supply chains by moving into new markets among the poor that have limited access to global markets and remain largely untapped. The research …

There has been a trend within the last decade, observable to economic development practitioners, for innovation becoming increasingly integrated into and central to mainstream economic development. To date it can be seen across all areas of economic development, including factors of competitiveness and competitive advantage, to the attraction and retention of talent. Arguably, this extends the policy recommendations and implications of innovation from competitiveness and growth to the perceived dynamicity and attractiveness of a locale to potential inward investors and upwardly mobile entrepreneurs.

This dissertation explores the evolution of innovation policy, through design and implementation, over a nine-year period. The …

High-Tech Transportation Corridors Are In Vogue: Proposed Federal Transportation Policy Amendments, Clovia Hamilton

Winthrop Faculty and Staff Publications

When there is an economic downturn, cities are forced to develop a strategy to revitalize. Increasing the transfer of high technology into the marketplace stimulates the economy. High tech industries are industries that include relatively high percentages of scientific and technical workers, or industries that make relatively large expenditures in research and development. "[I]n difficult economic times, political stakeholders in the technology transfer process usually view success in economic impact terms, and often from short-term and parochial perspectives-how many jobs in my state next year?" Examples include the expansion of the suburban space economy in the 1980s that produced new …

The Imperative For Energizing The Industrial Transformation In Nigeria., D. Olu Ajakaiye, A. Sesan Ayodele

Bullion

The paper examined the imperative for energizing the industrial transformation. Given the foreign uncompetitive and high cost economic environment, the imperative for energizing the industrial transformation in Nigeria, is to create a conducive environment under which there would be free inflow of foreign investible funds. This may not be possible unless the current industrial environment changes to one whose enabling environment encourages industrial policy instruments that make Nigeria a least cost industrial producer. This suggests something drastic must be done policy-wise to modify the existing high bank-lending rate to make it supportive to the industrialization process. Besides, the depreciation of …
