Cod Fish And Cooking Pots: Research On Trade Routes Of The French North Atlantic, Mallory Champagne, Catherine Losier

The materiality of the French occupation at Anse à Bertrand, Saint-Pierre has been documented over three years of excavation to understand the commercial routes that provisioned the fisherman who inhabited the point from 1763 to 1815. By comparing the ceramics from that occupation to the temporally similar Habitation Crève Coeur in Martinique, the trade routes that connect France’s colonial territories can be further understood, highlighting the vitality of these labour forces to the French empire.

A growing literature on the archaeology of farmsteads and rural domestic sites has examined commodity consumption as the means by which rural families created and maintained social networks and identities. During the nineteenth century, rural areas were increasingly influenced by the practices and values of the urban middle classes, although not every farmstead would, or could, participate in the same way. This paper examines a matching teacup and saucer recovered from the Spring House, a former commercial farmstead and hotel located southeastern Monroe County, Western New York State. What The Warners Wore: An Archaeological Investigation Ofvisual Appearance, Carolyn L. White

Clothing fasteners, jewelry, and several fragmentary accessories were recovered in 18th-century contexts during excavations at the Warner House in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. These artifacts provide insight into the clothing and accessories worn by members of the three households that resided in the Warner House during the 18th and early-19th centuries. The visual appearance of the residents communicates information about gender and class affiliations on an individual basis and also places the individuals as members of larger gender and class groupings.

In his book In Small Things Forgotten, James Deetz (1977) challenged archaeologists to use material culture as a source of information about human actions that may not be represented widely in the written record. Consequently, studies of ethnic minority groups became popular in American historical archaeology from the 1970s onwards. Equally invisible, however, are immigrant groups who wish to blend in with-or whose character resembles that of-the charter group in a given region. The Van Lidth De Jeude Family And The Waste From Their Privy: Material Culture Of A Wealthy Family In 18th-Century Tiel, The Netherlands, Michiel H. Bartels

This study uses the comprehensive material culture of the 18th-century privy of the regent family Van Lidth de Jeude in Tiel (the Netherlands). The analysis takes advantage of the secondary sources that are common in the Netherlands to evaluate the privy contents. The archaeological finds are interpreted with the aid of historical documents, contemporary literature and probate inventories, and the content of the privy is set against the background of an 18th-century provincial town in the heart of the Netherlands.
