Excavation Of The Augustin Grignon Home In The Grignon Trading Post Site, Ou-0072, Kaukauna, Peter N. Peregrine

Between September and November 2022 Lawrence University conducted excavations of the structure identified previously as the Augustin Grignon Home, located within the Grignon Trading Post Site (OU-0072) in the City of Kaukauna, Wisconsin. Excavations were conducted to determine if the early 19th century Augustin Grignon Home incorporated an 18th century cabin, purportedly used by Dominique DuCharme as a trading post. Excavations determined that there are intact archaeological deposits within the Grignon Trading Post Site, which indicate that it is potentially eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Geophysical Survey Of Morrill Cemetery, Town Of Stockton, Portage County, Wi Bpt-0021, Peter N. Peregrine

On November 1, 2022 Lawrence University conducted a geophysical survey on the eastern side of Morrill Cemetery (BPT-0021) in the Town of Stockton, Portage County, Wisconsin. High-resolution magnetic data were collected over a 30 meter by 60 meter grid to determine if unmarked interments were present in the cemetery. The survey identified a number of magnetic anomalies that appear to be consistent with the presence of unmarked interments. It is recommended that any ground disturbance in the cemetery proceed under the expectation that interments might be disturbed.

Geophysical Survey Of The Christ Evangelical And Reformed Cemetery, Germantown, Wi Bwt-0056, Peter N. Peregrine

On October 18, 2022 Lawrence University conducted a geophysical survey on the southwestern side of the Christ Evangelical and Reformed Church cemetery (BTW-0056) in Germantown, Wisconsin. High-resolution magnetic data were conducted over a 20 meter by 40 meter grid to determine if unmarked interments were present in the cemetery. The survey identified a number of magnetic anomalies that appear to be consistent with the presence of unmarked interments. It is recommended that any ground disturbance in the cemetery proceed under the expectation that interments might be disturbed.

The formation of China is a process of national integration and a fusion of different beliefs. However, under Chairman Mao (1949-1976) and specifically during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), people were reeducated to focus on Communism and expel remnants of traditional Chinese culture including the various religions. Although, after the Cultural Revolution, China reinstated its policy of religious freedom, there were still strict laws against religion. The purpose of this project is to assess the effect of state formation on wealth inequality among the Zapotec people. This project seeks to address two questions: (1) How are the levels of wealth inequality in the Tilcajete sites affected with the emergence of state? and (2) What variables are better suited to accurately measure wealth inequality in ancient cities? To answer these questions, we used a variety of methods that all conclude with the quantitative representation of inequality, the Gini coefficient. This project examined commingled and fragmentary skeletal remains from Koch Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri, where thousands of epidemic victims were buried in mass graves. There were two primary research objectives: 1) to use archival research to construct a site history and understand patient demographics, and 2) to decommingle and estimate collection population. Archival research used Ancestry LE and Newspapers.com to collect data on the demographics of the dead and historical social dynamics of healthcare. Zooarchaeological and forensic anthropological methods, including zonation and landmark analysis, were used to estimate the minimum number of individuals (MNI) and most likely number of …

Communities constantly produce and reinforce notions of cultural heritage in their expressions of identity and memory. Especially in rural communities, this process of engaging with heritage is deeply rooted in a landscape, embedded in how people experience connection with the landscape. Preservation of this heritage greatly influences senses of social, cultural, and historical identity at individual, community, and nation levels. As contexts that express a unique sense of place, rural traditional landscapes encounter threats to their heritage in the face of modern development, unemployment, and changing policies. Between September and November 2020 Lawrence University conducted a geophysical survey in the area immediately northwest of the historic Grignon Mansion. The survey was undertaken to follow up on a previous geophysical survey, conducted in 2018, that identified possible prehistoric structures in that area. A combination of high-resolution magnetic, soil resistivity, and ground penetrating radar surveys were conducted over a 40 meter by 40 meter area in anticipation of better resolving these structures. This past summer I worked with two other students and Colin Quinn to research community museums, identity, and the cultural heritage of Translyvania. Each of us focused on a different topic for our research. I worked on researching community museums worldwide and how we can take their practices and apply it to a community museum we plan to build at the Rametz site. Most of these museums I researched were under the control of the communities themselves and the exhibits and design were made to emphasize the identity and cultural heritage of that community. In this paper, I examine the practice of cultural heritage preservation. In particular, I seek to understand how cultural heritage in rural landscapes, both in its intangible and tangible aspects, can be sustainably preserved. I focus my discussion on traditional rural landscapes in southwest Transylvania, Romania. Specifically, I ask how can we design the Ramet Museum Project to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of rural Transylvania? This paper aims to encapsulate the basic features of the human mandible while also addressing the evolution and morphological mandibular variation between mammals. It also aims to address the role that anthropology and all its sub-disciplines has played in the exploitation and erasure of Indigenous peoples. During the Portuguese rule of Dom Pedro II until 1889, through the years of the First Brazilian Republic (1889-1930) and into the First Vargas Regime (1930-1945), Brazil struggled to solidify a strong national identity that would finally unify the country and legitimize its rich cultural heritage. The discovery and excavation of Marajó Island in the 1870s provided evidence of a great, ancient civilization, and inspired Brazilian Art Deco and early Modernist artists. Polychrome ceramic urns, vessels, and tangas (female pubic covers) were among the most abundant archaeological finds, many with zoomorphic and geometric motifs that show the cultural importance of …

In the far-northern reaches of the greater American Southwest, diverse groups of small-scale agriculturalists, labeled “Fremont” by archaeologists, spread across the northern Colorado Plateau and eastern Great Basin. During the long history of Fremont archaeology, most projects have focused on the excavation of only one or a few residences even in large village sites. Until recently, there has been little effort to understand Fremont social organization or Fremont communities and nothing that could be called household archaeology (but see Hall 2008; Hockett 1998; Janetski and Talbot 2000, 2014; Simms 2008). Between September and November 2018 Lawrence University conducted a geophysical survey, Phase I shovel testing, and a single Phase II 1.5 meter by 1.5 meter test excavation to determine if significant archaeological deposits are present on the north side of the historic Grignon Mansion. The survey and test excavations were undertaken on behalf of the City of Kaukauna in anticipation of constructing a replica of the summer kitchen that had once been located on the north side of the Mansion. The survey and excavations found what are thought to be remnants of the original summer kitchen, including a possible original …

Archaeological Reports

On October 23 and 25 a geophysical survey using geomagnetic, soil resistivity, and ground penetrating radar methods was conducted to determine if there are unmarked interments at Wisconsin Burial Site OC-0042, the Brazeau Pioneer Cemetery. The survey was undertaken on behalf of the Town of Brazeau in anticipation of using the cemetery for burial. The survey found no evidence of extant interments in the cemetery.
