Observations On The Aboriginal Remains In Eastern New Jersey: The Notebook Of Charles F. Woolley, 1878-1881, Megan E. Springate Nov 2002

Observations On The Aboriginal Remains In Eastern New Jersey: The Notebook Of Charles F. Woolley, 1878-1881, Megan E. Springate

Megan E. Springate

Charles F. Woolley was a school teacher and avocational archaeologist in New Jersey in the late nineteenth century. One of his notebooks, which survives in a local history repository, includes details of his collection, which was largely prehistoric. Information from the notebook was used to identify site locations, and to track down several artifacts that Woolley had donated. I have removed specific site location information from this publicly available version of the conference paper.

Food, Fodder, Or Fuel?: Harvesting The Secrets Of Ancient Seeds, Naomi F. Miller Nov 2002

Food, Fodder, Or Fuel?: Harvesting The Secrets Of Ancient Seeds, Naomi F. Miller

University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology Papers

When I was in Southern Iraq in the 1970s, I collected charred woods and seed plant remains from the ancient city of Anshan, today’s Malyan. Although charcoal was plentiful, there were not many compared with other sites in the Near East. But as with those other sites, the seeds I did find included a high proportion of wild and weedy types. Yet Malyan was the capital of an ancient agricultural civilization, where wheat and barley had been cultivated for thousands of years. Why were there so many seeds of wild, nonfood plants? Even the cultigens were hard ...

What Was Under The Mcmartin Preschool? A Review And Behavioral Analysis Of The "Tunnels" Find, W. Joseph Wyatt Oct 2002

What Was Under The Mcmartin Preschool? A Review And Behavioral Analysis Of The "Tunnels" Find, W. Joseph Wyatt

Psychology Faculty Research

The McMartin Preschool child abuse case began in 1983 in Manhattan Beach, California, and was one of the most visible cases in history. Although two trials were conducted and no convictions were obtained, some individuals continue to believe that dozens of children were sexually abused at the preschool. In 1990 an archeologist was hired to determine whether tunnels had existed under the school because some of the children had alleged that some of their abuse took place in tunnels under the building. The archeologist’s report was issued in 1993. It concluded that evidence of back-filled tunnels had been found ...

Predictive Model For Archeological And Historic Site Locations Within The Big Fossil Creek Drainage, Tarrant County, Texas, Nancy Parrish, Elizabeth A. Burson

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Fort Worth District, is investigating the water resource problems, needs, and opportunities within the Big Fossil Creek drainage in Tarrant County, Texas. The effort focuses on describing existing conditions and identifying measures to minimize and control flood loss within a 48,396.8-acre area of the drainage north of the city of Fort Worth. Geo-Marine, Inc., of Plano, Texas, was contracted by the USACE to assess the potential for historic properties within the drainage area. Background research and a pedestrian reconnaissance survey of the project area were carried out and a geographical ...
