Upon notification that the upper San Pedro Acequia was known to be below the anticipated parking lot to be constructed for the VIA Metropolitan Transit System, the Texas Historical Commission (THC) contacted the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, to investigate and document the site. A representative from the THC examined the site and requested minimal excavation and documentation of the San Pedro Acequia in this location. We recommend that this portion of the San Pedro Acequia is eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.

The purpose of this archaeological project was to evaluate the cultural resource significance of the southern portion of Lot 6, its potential for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places and as a State Archeological Landmark, and to determine if development would cause significant damage to subsurface deposits. In September 1985, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, was requested to conduct an investigation of the archaeological potential of the Acuña Furniture and Music Company building located at 125 North Flores Street, San Antonio, Texas. An archival search, to determine the construction period of the present building and possible prior structures, was conducted, and an on-site inspection was made. Both indicated that no historic resources would be affected by the demolition of the building. The demolition of the building was monitored to assure that no artifacts were revealed. Test excavations were carried out at two locations on the grounds of the old U.S. Arsenal in downtown San Antonio, Texas, in December 1983. Backhoe trenching at the north end of the site revealed no indication of the location of an acequia lateral suspected to run through the area. Test excavations at the south end of the stone stable building found no indication of the location of a stairway which is presumed to have led to a second story doorway in the wall of the building. La Villita Earthworks is located in the heart of downtown San Antonio, Texas. The site appears to have been formed initially in late February 1836, by Mexican soldiers with General Santa Anna’s invading forces during the second battle of the Alamo. The outcome of this battle has been the topic for literally thousands of books over the past 149 years. Now, for the first time, archaeological evidence has been discovered which provides the first real glimpse at the Mexican side of the battle of the Alamo. The State Department of Highways and Public Transportation plans to add access lanes along segments of Loop 410 (IH 410) in the City of San Antonio, Texas. The project traverses the acequia systems of Missions San Francisco de la Espada and San Juan Capistrano and also is adjacent to an historic site, 41BX252, which is the possible location of some historical structures. Backhoe trenching and hand excavation, conducted December 8 and 9, 1986, produced no nineteenth century or Spanish Colonial materials, and also revealed that the segments of the acequias and desagues (laterals) within the project right-of-way had been disturbed …
