Pseudoarchaeology: Archaeology's Long-Lost Cousin?, Rebekah Gansemer Jan 2018

Pseudoarchaeology: Archaeology's Long-Lost Cousin?, Rebekah Gansemer

Honors Theses at the University of Iowa

The belief that in the ancient past, our ancestors were visited by extraterrestrials has enraptured audiences. Ancient alien theorists find ‘proof’ of these visitations in the many prehistoric archaeological sites. These theories have persisted for decades despite the wishes of many in academia—most especially archaeologists who are most closely associated with and work on many of the sites where supposed ‘evidence’ can be found. Academic archaeologist are quick to denounce these theories and distance themselves from those they consider ‘pseudoarchaeologists’ or non-scientific theorists. It is my argument that pseudoarchaeology and academic archaeology are not in fact related disciplines that ...

Towards Standards For The Manual Digitization And Vectorization Of Analog Historical Maps And Records, Ian Dunshee Jan 2016

Towards Standards For The Manual Digitization And Vectorization Of Analog Historical Maps And Records, Ian Dunshee

Honors Theses at the University of Iowa

While the development of automatic object recognition and vectorization algorithms to be used on scanned or digitized maps is a vibrant area of study today, most are not developed for or suitable for use with either historical maps in general or archaeological field maps both historic and modern. Current algorithms use methods such as line thinning and other approximation techniques while also relying on continuous lines and features as well as color/greyscale spectrums in the source maps to function. These often are not present in hand-drawn field maps or very old maps which can contain many irregular features and ...

Little Dairy On The Prairie: From Butter-Makin' Women To High-Tech Agriculture, Cynthia L. Peterson, Clare L. Kernak, Leah D. Rogers

Publications from The Office of the State Archaeologist

In 2001, extensive archaeological excavations were conducted at the Oneida Cheese Factory in Jones County. The county is a microcosm of larger dairying trends found throughout northeast Iowa, the state's premier dairy-producing region, Jones County moved from homemade cheese and butter production by farm women, to the industrialization of the dairy farm and opening of cheese factories and butter creameries. A number of innovations affected the industry around the turn-of-the-twentieth century, including reliable butterfat testing, the introduction of ensilage (silos) that created year round milk production, and consolidation of the many local creameries into larger creamery organizations, such as ...
