During the Second World War, nearly 34,000 German Prisoners of War (PoWs) were transferred from British to Canadian control, and Canada thus hastily set up several large PoW camps and smaller satellite camps. PoWs filled leisure time with hobbies and crafts such as theatre, painting, model ship building, and woodworking. At Riding Mountain Work Camp, a forestry work camp in Riding Mountain National Park, Manitoba, PoWs were even allowed to build and use dugout log canoes on a nearby stream and lake. Archaeological fieldwork at the site revealed that at least four of these canoes are still extant in the …

During the height of the Second World War pressure from Great Britain resulted in the transfer of thousands of German prisoners of war (PoWs) from British to Canadian control. To house them, Canada built a system of PoW camps, including Riding Mountain Camp in southwestern Manitoba. The PoWs sent there soon realized their good fortune: they lived in warm barracks, ate abundant food, and were able to purchase goods from a mail order catalog. But while the PoWs were well treated, they were at the same time subjected to a concerted reeducation campaign organized by the Allies. This reveals that …

In this opening chapter, we introduce the developing field of archaeologies of internment. We first illustrate the prevalence of modern forms of institutional internment around the world since the final decades of the nineteenth century. Second, we offer a tentative definition of "internment” and describe what is meant by an “archaeology of internment,” including a review of previous research in the field. Third, we situate the archaeology of internment within an interdisciplinary context, and discuss some of its potential strengths and unique contributions. The internment of civilian and military prisoners became an increasingly common feature of conflicts in the twentieth century and into the twenty-first. Prison camps, though often hastily constructed and just as quickly destroyed, have left their marks in the archaeological record. Due to both their temporary nature and their often sensitive political contexts, places of internment present a unique challenge to archaeologists and heritage managers.

As archaeologists have begun to explore the material remains of internment using a range of methods, these interdisciplinary studies have demonstrated the potential to connect individual memories and historical debates to the fragmentary material remains. …

This article uses an assemblage of recently abandoned material culture as a medium for exploring the world in which we all live. First it is suggested that if we are to study contemporary material culture, then our methodology must be collaborative, multivocal, and innovative. Next, an assemblage of materials recovered from a 1991 Ford Transit van, used by archaeologists in the field for 8 years, is investigated as a case study. The vehicle is epistemologically dismantled, and it is demonstrated that the car part should be treated as a diagnostic artifact. A close investigation of the recovered small finds uncovers …

Camp Delta, Google Earth And The Ethics Of Remote Sensing In Archaeology, Adrian Myers

With easy access to satellite imagery through free applications such as Google Earth, it is now financially feasible for archaeologists to undertake remote survey in areas that are difficult or impossible to access in person. But there are ethical concerns inherent in the use of remotely sensed images, as Google Earth might be seen as a panoptic viewing technology that leaves no voice to those being viewed. Through a virtual investigation of the Camp Delta prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, I discuss methodological and theoretical aspects of the use of Google Earth in archaeology.

As archaeologists increasingly survey and excavate at sites from the late 19th to the mid-20th centuries, they more commonly encounter artifacts that the standard guides do not consider. Included in this class of “too recent” artifacts are the material remnants of the early electrification of the American household. Particularly ubiquitous electrical artifacts are the small white porcelain knobs, tubes, and cleats used in “knob and tube” wiring systems. Meticulous research by insulator collectors, notably Jack Tod and Elton Gish, is a significant boon to the archaeologist, and their work shows that these artifacts can often be dated and provenanced. Like any other factory, the death factory of Auschwitz consumed primary materials and produced secondary products. Unique to Auschwitz, though, is that the primary material consumed was human life; not just the life of the breathing human body, but also the material possessions associated with that life. The detritus of this most efficient genocide – clothing, jewellery, food, corpses – was appropriated and put to new uses by the SS and the prisoners.
