Toward A Morphometric Phylogeny Of Caddo Ceramics: A Test Of 3d Geometric Morphometrics, Robert Z. Selden Jr., Timothy K. Perttula, Michael J. O'Brien
CRHR: Archaeology
In this poster we use 3D geometric morphometrics as an exploratory tool for examining diversity in vessel form (or shape) among 27 whole or reconstructed Caddo vessels from the Vanderpool site in Smith County, Texas. Forty-one landmarks from each vessel were exported to version 2.5 of Morphologika for generalized Procrustes analysis and principal components analysis and were then exported to R for cluster analysis (depending on sample size). Despite the small sample size, results indicate that 3D geometric morphometric analysis is an avenue of ceramic research where substantive analytical gains can be realized.
A Generalized Inflated Poisson Distribution, Patrick Stewart
A Generalized Inflated Poisson Distribution, Patrick Stewart
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Count data with excess number of zeros, ones or twos are commonly encountered in experimental situations. In this thesis we have examined one such fertility data from Sweden. The standard Poisson distribution, which is widely used to model such count data, may not provide a good fit to model women's fertility (defined as the number of children per woman in her lifetime) in a specific population due to various cultural and sociological reasons. Therefore, the usual Poisson distribution is inflated at specific values suitably, as dictated by the societal norms, to fit the available data. The data set is examined …

Cycle Lengths Of Θ-Biased Random Permutations, Tongjia Shi
Cycle Lengths Of Θ-Biased Random Permutations, Tongjia Shi
HMC Senior Theses
Consider a probability distribution on the permutations of n elements. If the probability of each permutation is proportional to θK, where K is the number of cycles in the permutation, then we say that the distribution generates a θ-biased random permutation. A random permutation is a special θ-biased random permutation with θ = 1. The mth moment of the rth longest cycle of a random permutation is Θ(nm), regardless of r and θ. The joint moments are derived, and it is shown that the longest cycles of a permutation can either be positively or …

Generalized Classes Of Distributions With Applications To Income And Lifetime Data, Shujiao Huang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, new classes of distributions namely: exponentiated Kumaraswamy-Dagum (EKD), Log-exponentiated Kumaraswamy-Dagum (Log-EKD), McDonald Log-logistic (McLLog) and Gamma-Dagum (GD) distributions are presented. A thorough and comprehensive investigation of these classes of distributions is conducted. Mathematical properties of these classes of distributions including series expansion, hazard and reverse hazard functions, moments, generating functions, mean and median deviations, Bonferroni and Lorenz curves, distribution of order statistics, moments of order statistics and entropies are presented. Estimation of parameters of these distributions via maximum likelihood technique, Fisher information and asymptotic confidence intervals are given. Maximum likelihood estimation of the parameters of the exponentiated …

Tornado occurrence rates computed from the available reports are biased low relative to the unknown true rates. To correct for this low bias, the authors demonstrate a method to estimate the annual probability of being struck by a tornado that uses the average report density estimated as a function of distance from nearest city/town center. The method is demonstrated on Kansas and then applied to 15 other tornado-prone states from Nebraska to Tennessee. States are ranked according to their adjusted tornado rate and comparisons are made with raw rates published elsewhere. The adjusted rates, expressed as return periods, arestates, including …
Improving Time Structure Patterns Of Orthogonal Markov Chains And Its Consequences In Hydraulic Simulations, Juan C. Jaimes-Correa
Improving Time Structure Patterns Of Orthogonal Markov Chains And Its Consequences In Hydraulic Simulations, Juan C. Jaimes-Correa
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Rainfall1 occurrences understood as rain events are relevant for agricultural practices because temporal distribution of rainfall highly affects yield production. A few stochastic models satisfactorily generate daily rainfall events while preserving temporal and spatial dependence among multiple sites. I evaluated an extension on the traditional Orthogonal Markov chain (TOMC) model in reproducing the temporal structure of rainfall events at multiple sites in Florida (FL), Nebraska (NE) and California (CA). In addition, a simulation of watershed runoff from rainfall events, reproduced by a single- and multi-site weather generator, was conducted. Results shows that (i) a temporal structure extended …
A Hybrid Agent-Based And Differential Equations Model For Simulating Antibiotic Resistance In A Hospital Ward, Lester Caudill, Barry Lawson
A Hybrid Agent-Based And Differential Equations Model For Simulating Antibiotic Resistance In A Hospital Ward, Lester Caudill, Barry Lawson
Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications
Serious infections due to antibiotic-resistant bacteria are pervasive, and of particular concern within hospital units due to frequent interaction among health-care workers and patients. Such nosocomial infections are difficult to eliminate because of inconsistent disinfection procedures and frequent interactions among infected persons, and because ill-chosen antibiotic treatment strategies can lead to a growth of resistant bacterial strains. Clinical studies to address these concerns have several issues, but chief among them are the effects on the patients involved. Realistic simulation models offer an attractive alternative. This paper presents a hybrid simulation model of antibiotic resistant infections in a hospital ward, combining …
Mapping Spatial Thematic Accuracy Using Indicator Kriging, Maria I. Martinez
Mapping Spatial Thematic Accuracy Using Indicator Kriging, Maria I. Martinez
Masters Theses
Thematic maps derived from remote sensing imagery is increasingly being used in environmental and ecological modeling. Spatial information in these maps however is not free of error. Different methodologies such as error matrices are used to assess the accuracy of the spatial information. However, most of the methods commonly used for describing the accuracy assessment of thematic data fail to describe spatial differences of the accuracy across an area of interest. This thesis describes the use of indicator kriging as a geostatistical method for mapping the spatial accuracy of thematic maps. The method is illustrated by constructing accuracy maps for …
Random Search Models Of Foraging Behavior: Theory, Simulation, And Observation., Ben C. Nolting
Random Search Models Of Foraging Behavior: Theory, Simulation, And Observation., Ben C. Nolting
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Many organisms, from bacteria to primates, use stochastic movement patterns to find food. These movement patterns, known as search strategies, have recently be- come a focus of ecologists interested in identifying universal properties of optimal foraging behavior. In this dissertation, I describe three contributions to this field. First, I propose a way to extend Charnov's Marginal Value Theorem to the spatially explicit framework of stochastic search strategies. Next, I describe simulations that compare the efficiencies of sensory and memory-based composite search strategies, which involve switching between different behavioral modes. Finally, I explain a new behavioral analysis protocol for identifying the …
Use Of P-Values To Evaluate The Probability Of A Genuine Finding In Large-Scale Genetic Association Studies, Olga A. Vsevolozhskaya, Qing Lu, Chia-Ling Kuo, Dmitri V. Zaykin
Use Of P-Values To Evaluate The Probability Of A Genuine Finding In Large-Scale Genetic Association Studies, Olga A. Vsevolozhskaya, Qing Lu, Chia-Ling Kuo, Dmitri V. Zaykin
Olga A. Vsevolozhskaya
To claim the existence of an association in modern genome-wide association studies (GWAS), a nominal P-value has to exceed a stringent Bonferroni-adjusted significance level. Despite strictness of the correction, a significant P-value does not indicate high probability that the claimed association is genuine. A simple Bayesian solution -- the False Positive Report Probability (FPRP) -- was previously proposed to convert the observed P-value to the corresponding probability of no true association. Although the FPRP solution is highly popular, it does not reflect probability that a particular finding is false. Here, we offer a simple POFIG method -- a Probability that …
Image Quality Of Energy-Dependent Approaches For X-Ray Angiography, Jesse Evan Tanguay
Image Quality Of Energy-Dependent Approaches For X-Ray Angiography, Jesse Evan Tanguay
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) is an x-ray-based imaging method widely used for diagnosis and treatment of patients with vascular disease. This technique uses subtraction of images acquired before and after injection of an iodinated contrast agent to generate iodine-specific images. While it is extremely successful at imaging structures that are near-stationary over a period of several seconds, motion artifacts can result in poor image quality with uncooperative patients and DSA is rarely used for coronary applications.
Alternative methods of generating iodine-specific images with reduced motion artifacts might exploit the energy-dependence of x-ray attenuation in a patient. This could be performed …
Pricing And Hedging Index Options With A Dominant Constituent Stock, Helen Cheyne
Pricing And Hedging Index Options With A Dominant Constituent Stock, Helen Cheyne
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
In this paper, we examine the pricing and hedging of an index option where one constituents stock plays an overly dominant role in the index. Under a Geometric Brownian Motion assumption we compare the distribution of the relative value of the index if the dominant stock is modeled separately from the rest of the index, or not. The former is equivalent to the relative index value being distributed as the sum of two lognormal random variables and the latter is distributed as a single lognormal random variable. Since these are not equal in distribution, we compare the two models. The …
Long Time Asymptotics Of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck Processes In Poisson Random Media, Fei Xing
Long Time Asymptotics Of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck Processes In Poisson Random Media, Fei Xing
Doctoral Dissertations
The Models of Random Motions in Random Media (RMRM) have been shown to have fruitful applications in various scientific areas such as polymer physics, statistical mechanics, oceanography, etc. In this dissertation, we consider a special model of RMRM: the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process in a Poisson random medium and investigate the long time evolution of its random energy. We give complete answers to the long time asymptotics of the exponential moments of the random energy with both positive and negative coefficients, under both quenched and annealed regimes. Through these results, we find out a dramatic difference between the long time behavior of …

Automating Large-Scale Simulation Calibration To Real-World Sensor Data, Richard Everett Edwards
Automating Large-Scale Simulation Calibration To Real-World Sensor Data, Richard Everett Edwards
Doctoral Dissertations
Many key decisions and design policies are made using sophisticated computer simulations. However, these sophisticated computer simulations have several major problems. The two main issues are 1) gaps between the simulation model and the actual structure, and 2) limitations of the modeling engine's capabilities. This dissertation's goal is to address these simulation deficiencies by presenting a general automated process for tuning simulation inputs such that simulation output matches real world measured data. The automated process involves the following key components -- 1) Identify a model that accurately estimates the real world simulation calibration target from measured sensor data; 2) Identify …

A Gaming Application Of The Negative Hypergeometric Distribution, Steven Norman Jones
A Gaming Application Of The Negative Hypergeometric Distribution, Steven Norman Jones
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The Negative Hypergeometric distribution represents waiting times when drawing from a finite sample without replacement. It is analogous to the negative binomial, which models the distribution of waiting times when drawing with replacement. Even though the Negative Hypergeometric has applications it is typically omitted from textbooks on probability and statistics and is not generally known. The main purpose of this thesis is to derive expressions for the mean and variance of a new application of the Negative Hypergeometric to gaming and gambling. Other applications are described as well.

The Torsion Angle Of Random Walks, Mu He
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In this thesis, we study the expected mean of the torsion angle of an n-step
equilateral random walk in 3D. We consider the random walk is generated within a confining sphere or without a confining sphere: given three consecutive vectors →e1 , →e2 , and →e3 of the random walk then the vectors →e1 and →e2 define a plane and the vectors →e2 and →e3 define a second plane. The angle between the two planes is called the torsion angle of the three vectors. Algorithms are …
The Untenability Of A Priori Prior Probabilities In Objective Bayesian Conditionalization, C.S. Arledge
The Untenability Of A Priori Prior Probabilities In Objective Bayesian Conditionalization, C.S. Arledge
Senior Honors Theses
The problem of theory confirmation has been an issue in the philosophy of science for decades. Many valiant attempts have been made to formulate a generally accepted criterion for determining the validity of a scientific theory. Bayesian probability theory has been utilized in numerous attempts to examine the epistemic nature of theory confirmation and Jonathan Weisberg offers a formulation of Bayesian Conditionalization that he believes to be both objective and successful.
In this paper I intend to show the defects in Weisberg’s theory of objective Bayesian confirmation by utilizing the arguments of both W.V. Quine and Bas van Fraassen to …

Synthesis: What We Have Learned From The East Texas Radiocarbon Database, Robert Z. Selden Jr., Timothy K. Perttula
CRHR: Archaeology
This poster provides a short overview of what we have learned from the East Texas Radiocarbon Database since it became available on the Council of Texas Archeologists’ website in 2011. These successes are numerous and include the advancement of novel methodological approaches; an improvement in our comprehension of the temporal nuances within the East Texas Archaic; the division of the East Texas Woodland period into Early, Middle and Late; the refinement of Caddo temporal chronology – particularly from a geographic perspective -- and it has provided one line of evidence to use to argue for the fluorescence of corn-based agriculture …

The American Antiquities Act, Historic Sites Act, Archeological and Historic Preservation Act, National Historic Preservation Act, American Indian Religious Freedom Act, Archeological Resources Protection Act, Abandoned Shipwreck Act, and the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act comprise the basis of our exploration of cultural resource legislation in the United States. Since the passage of the American Antiquities Act in 1906, 1086 cases have challenged these statutes in U.S. courts. We investigate temporal and regional patterns of the case law to establish whether these laws are uniformly prosecuted throughout the U.S. Our findings suggest that case law is complex and …

Radiocarbon Trends And The East Texas Caddo Tradition (Ca. A.D. 800-1680), Robert Z. Selden Jr., Timothy K. Perttula
CRHR: Archaeology
Through the employment of radiocarbon (14C) dates as data, we use the date combination process to refine site-specific summed probability distributions for 555 dates from Caddo sites (n = 19) in East Texas with 10 or more 14C dates. Summed probability distributions are then contrasted across river basins and natural regions with the remainder of the East Texas Caddo Radiocarbon Database (n = 338 dates from 132 other Caddo sites), highlighting the temporal and spatial character of Caddo archaeological sites throughout East Texas.
A Superposed Log-Linear Failure Intensity Model For Repairable Artillery Systems, Byeong Min Mun, Suk Joo Bae, Paul Kvam
A Superposed Log-Linear Failure Intensity Model For Repairable Artillery Systems, Byeong Min Mun, Suk Joo Bae, Paul Kvam
Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications
This article investigates complex repairable artillery systems that include several failure modes. We derive a superposed process based on a mixture of nonhomogeneous Poisson processes in a minimal repair model. This allows for a bathtub-shaped failure intensity that models artillery data better than currently used methods. The method of maximum likelihood is used to estimate model parameters and construct confidence intervals for the cumulative intensity of the superposed process. Finally, we propose an optimal maintenance policy for repairable systems with bathtub-shaped intensity and apply it to the artillery-failure data.
Simplicial Complexes Obtained From Qualitative Probability Orders, Paul H. Edelman, Tatiana Gvozdeva, Arkadii Slinko
Simplicial Complexes Obtained From Qualitative Probability Orders, Paul H. Edelman, Tatiana Gvozdeva, Arkadii Slinko
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
The goal of this paper is to introduce a new class of simplicial complexes that naturally generalize the threshold complexes. These will be derived from qualitative probability orders on subsets of a finite set that generalize subset orders induced by probability measures. We show that this new class strictly contains the threshold complexes and is strictly contained in the shifted complexes. We conjecture that this class of complexes is exactly the set of strongly acyclic complexes, a class that has previously appeared in the context of cooperative games. Beyond the results themselves, this new class of complexes allows us to …

Numerical Solutions To The Gross-Pitaevskii Equation For Bose-Einstein Condensates, Luigi Galati
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis we compare various potential operators for the two-dimensional (2D) Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) for Bose-Einstein condensates. Both the 2D and the 1D models are scaled to get a three parameter model. Smoothness of initial conditions is considered and choice of method (Split-Step Fourier method with Strang Splitting) is justied. Numerical simulations provide graphical evidence of properties of both focusing and nonfocusing cases.
On The Distribution Of Quadratic Expressions In Various Types Of Random Vectors, Ali Akbar Mohsenipour
On The Distribution Of Quadratic Expressions In Various Types Of Random Vectors, Ali Akbar Mohsenipour
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Several approximations to the distribution of indefinite quadratic expressions in possibly singular Gaussian random vectors and ratios thereof are obtained in this dissertation. It is established that such quadratic expressions can be represented in their most general form as the difference of two positive definite quadratic forms plus a linear combination of Gaussian random variables. New advances on the distribution of quadratic expressions in elliptically contoured vectors, which are expressed as scalar mixtures of Gaussian vectors, are proposed as well. Certain distributional aspects of Hermitian quadratic expressions in complex Gaussian vectors are also investigated. Additionally, approximations to the distributions of …
Approximate Methods For Dynamic Portfolio Allocation Under Transaction Costs, Nabeel Butt
Approximate Methods For Dynamic Portfolio Allocation Under Transaction Costs, Nabeel Butt
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The thesis provides robust and efficient lattice based algorithms for solving dynamic portfolio allocation problems under transaction costs. The early part of the thesis concentrates upon developing a toolbox based on multinomial trees. The multinomial trees are shown to provide a reasonable approximation for most popular transaction cost models in the academic literature. The tool, once forged, is implemented in the powerful Mathematica based parallel computing environment. In the second part of the thesis we provide applications of our framework to real world problems. We show re-balancing portfolios is more valuable in an investment environment where the growth and volatility …
