Optimal Survey Design For Community Intervention Evaluations: Cohort Or Cross-Sectional?, Paula Diehr Dec 1995

Optimal Survey Design For Community Intervention Evaluations: Cohort Or Cross-Sectional?, Paula Diehr

Paula Diehr

Community intervention evaluations that measure changes over time may conduct repeated cross-sectional surveys, follow a cohort of residents over time, or (often) use both designs. Each survey design has implications for precision and cost. To explore these issues, we assume that two waves of surveys are conducted, and that the goal is to estimate change in behavior for people who reside in the community at both times. Cohort designs are shown to provide more accurate estimates (in the sense of lower mean squared error) than cross-sectional estimates if (1) there is strong correlation over time in an individual's behavior at …

Mandibular Asymmetry In Unilateral Class Ii Malocclusion : A Cephalometric Study, Raed Z. Moussa Dec 1995

Mandibular Asymmetry In Unilateral Class Ii Malocclusion : A Cephalometric Study, Raed Z. Moussa

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study is to evaluate skeletal and dental asymmetry in unilateral class II malocclusion. A study group of 25 unilateral subdivision patients was compared to 25 class I malocclusion patients serving as the control group. Submento-vertical and frontal radiographs were used for the evaluation. Symmetry was evaluated by comparing measurements between right and left sides for both groups and matching the middle points with the midsagittal axis. Statistical paired and simple t-test were used to evaluate the difference between the two sides for both groups. The measurements showed no significant skeletal and dental asymmetries except for three …

The Support Of Measure-Valued Branching Processes In A Random Environment, Donald A. Dawson, Yi Li, Carl Mueller Oct 1995

The Support Of Measure-Valued Branching Processes In A Random Environment, Donald A. Dawson, Yi Li, Carl Mueller

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We consider the one-dimensional catalytic branching process introduced by Dawson and Fleischmann, which is a modification of the super Brownian motion. The catalysts are given by a nonnegative infinitely divisible random measure with independent increments. We give sufficient conditions for the global support of the process to be compact, and sufficient conditions for noncompact global support. Since the catalytic process is related to the heat equation, compact support may be surprising. On the other hand, the super-Brownian motion has compact global support. We find that all nonnegative stable random measures lead to compact global support, and we give an example …

Analysis Of Growth Curves Under Some Special Covariance Structures, Shobha Prabhala

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

In this dissertation we consider the growth curve or generalized MANOVA model in its most general form given by and develop statistical methodology for analyzing data using this model. Here g represents the number of groups, Yij is the observation matrix, ξ is a matrix of unknown parameters, Ai is a known matrix of rank g, and Bij is a matrix of rank k. Further, the rows of the error matrix ∈ij are independent and each distributed as Npij (0, Σij). This model accommodates different kinds of unbalanced data, such as, monotone data, data …

Exorcising The Evil Of Forum-Shopping, Kevin M. Clermont, Theodore Eisenberg Sep 1995

Exorcising The Evil Of Forum-Shopping, Kevin M. Clermont, Theodore Eisenberg

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Most of the business of litigation comprises pretrial disputes. A common and important dispute is over where adjudication should take place. Civil litigators deal with nearly as many change-of-venue motions as trials. The battle over venue often constitutes the critical issue in a case.

The American way is to provide plaintiffs with a wide choice of venues for suit. But the American way has its drawbacks. To counter these drawbacks, an integral part of our court systems, and in particular the federal court system, is the scheme of transfer of venue "in the interest of justice." However, the leading evaluative …

A Study Of Cumulative Trauma Disorders Of The Upper Extremities And Occupation In Wright-Patterson Adir Force Base Civilian Personnel, Scott T. Hillstead Sep 1995

A Study Of Cumulative Trauma Disorders Of The Upper Extremities And Occupation In Wright-Patterson Adir Force Base Civilian Personnel, Scott T. Hillstead

Theses and Dissertations

This study utilized a case-control methodology to describe and analyze the 115 cases of occupational illnesses reported by civilian employees of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (AFB) between 1990 and 1995. Determining if a statistically significant association existed between age and duration of employment risk factors and cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs) was a primary objective. The frequency of CTDs among the various organizations at Wright-Patterson AFB are also described. The research could not prove the existence of a significant association for the 44 subjects and 176 controls matched on occupational group. However, the demographic and other descriptive results may form a …

A Preliminary Analysis Of The Theoretical Parameters Of Organizational Learning, Jeffery D. Loyd Sep 1995

A Preliminary Analysis Of The Theoretical Parameters Of Organizational Learning, Jeffery D. Loyd

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this research was to develop an instrument capable of measuring the theoretical parameters of organizational learning that could be used as a diagnostic tool to measure an organization's learning potential. This goal was accomplished by developing a pilot questionnaire based on 27 potential learning parameters. The potential parameters of learning were extracted from the literature. A scale of behavioral statements was developed for each potential parameter. The pilot questionnaire was completed by 108 Air Force personnel in Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) graduate education programs. The results confirmed 85% of the original scales. Ten refined scales …

The Implementation Of Federal Government Policy In The Reuse Planning Of Military Installations: A Case Study Of Gentile Air Force Station, John L. Hoover Sep 1995

The Implementation Of Federal Government Policy In The Reuse Planning Of Military Installations: A Case Study Of Gentile Air Force Station, John L. Hoover

Theses and Dissertations

Local communities affected by a base closure are uncertain as to their future and look to the federal government for guidance and economic assistance in rebuilding their local economy. The local communities want to close the base with as little federal government interference as possible and convert the base to civilian use with as much federal financial assistance as possible. During 1993-1994 two Air Force Institute of Technology research teams began longitudinal case studies of the base closure and rescue process at Gentile Air Force Station, Ohio to determine the effectiveness of the federal government's current approach. These research teams …

Breaking The Matches In A Paired T-Test For Community Interventions When The Number Of Pairs Is Small, Paula Diehr Jul 1995

Breaking The Matches In A Paired T-Test For Community Interventions When The Number Of Pairs Is Small, Paula Diehr

Paula Diehr

There is considerable interest in community interventions for health promotion, where the community is the experimental unit. Because such interventions are expensive, the number of experimental units (communities) is usually small. Because of the small number of communities involved, investigators often match treatment and control communities on demographic variables before randomization to minimize the possibility of a bad split. Unfortunately, matching has been shown to decrease the power of the design when the number of pairs is small, unless the matching variable is very highly correlated with the outcome variable (in this case, with change in the health behaviour). We …

Space Closure Efficiency With Modified Ceramic Brackets : A Comparative Study, Kirk A. Specht

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine if the rate of extraction site closure was determined by the type of ceramic bracket used. A new ceramic bracket with a metal archwire slot was compared with a conventional ceramic bracket. Twenty patients were randomly assigned the metal slot ceramic bracket and conventional ceramic to one half of their maxillary arch respectively. The distribution was even left and right.

Retraction was started and completed on an 0.016" stainless steel round continuous archwire. One hundred gram sentalloy springs provided a uniform retraction force and were reactivated every four weeks to maintain a …

Population Genetics: Estimation Of Distributions Through Systems Of Non-Linear Differential Equations, Nacer E. Abrouk, Robert J. Lopez May 1995

Population Genetics: Estimation Of Distributions Through Systems Of Non-Linear Differential Equations, Nacer E. Abrouk, Robert J. Lopez

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

In stochastic population genetics, the fundamental quantity used for describing the genetic composition of a Mendelian population is the gene frequency. The process of change in the gene frequency is generally modeled as a stochastic process satisfying a stochastic differential equation. The drift and diffusion coefficients in this equation reflect such mechanisms as mutation, selection, and migration that affect the population. Except in very simple cases, it is difficult to determine the probability law of the stochastic process of change in gene frequency. We present a method for obtaining approximations of this process, enabling us to study models more realistic …

Free-Boundary Problems For Potential And Stokes Flows Via Nonsmooth Analysis, Srdjan Stojanovic, Tom Svobodny May 1995

Free-Boundary Problems For Potential And Stokes Flows Via Nonsmooth Analysis, Srdjan Stojanovic, Tom Svobodny

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

A new approach to some free boundary problems of the type of jets and cavities for potential flows is introduced. Both potential and Stokes flows are considered. The variable domain problems are relaxed so that they become nonsmooth optimization problems on fixed domains for somewhat singular state equations. State equations are considered, and multivalued generalized gradients of the variational functionals are studied. The method is constructive.

A Robust Method Of Solving Nonlinear Boundary Value Problems Via Modified Compromise Programming, John L. Zornick May 1995

A Robust Method Of Solving Nonlinear Boundary Value Problems Via Modified Compromise Programming, John L. Zornick

Theses and Dissertations

This study is an extension of Ng's previous work in which goal programming was used to determine an approximate solution to a boundary value problem. This approach follows the same basic approach developed by Ng in which the method of collocation was recast as a compromise programming model. Hence, instead of solving a system of simultaneous nonlinear equations, one seeks a compromise solution which minimizes (in a weighted residual sense) a vector norm of the differential equation residuals. A difference in this approach is that it makes use of a genetic algorithm as the optimizing engine as opposed to the …

Sample Design In The Finnish Agricultural Income Statistics, Paavo Väisänen Apr 1995

Sample Design In The Finnish Agricultural Income Statistics, Paavo Väisänen

Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture

The Finnish Agricultural Income Statistics. published yearly by Statistics Finland, are based on a survey in which the data are collected from the farms in connection with taxation. The sampling design is stratified simple random sampling, in which Neyman allocation is used to calculate the sample sizes for the strata. The Farm Register is used as the sampling frame where variables such as region, production sector and arable land are available for stratification. The total incomes of farms from the previous survey serve as the allocation variable. Stratification and Neyman allocation rendered the estimates of most income variables more effective …

Mixed Models Approach To On-Farm Trials: An Alternative To Meta-Analysis For Comparing One Treatment To Possibly Different Controls, Peter M. Njuho, George A. Milliken Apr 1995

Mixed Models Approach To On-Farm Trials: An Alternative To Meta-Analysis For Comparing One Treatment To Possibly Different Controls, Peter M. Njuho, George A. Milliken

Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture

The estimator of effect size, the sample mean difference divided by the sample standard error of the difference is studied in the context of mixed models and is related to the analysis of on-farm trials. A single treatment is compared against possibly different controls using a completely randomized design on each farm. A lower (1-α)100% confidence limit on mean difference of the treatment and the average control is obtained. The best linear unbiased predictors (BLUPs) of the mean difference of the treatment and the individual controls as well as the lower (1-α)100% prediction limits are provided. The effect of omitting …

Using Tree Regression To Identify Nutritional And Environmental Factors Affecting Sugarcane Production, Kenneth M. Portier, David L. Anderson Apr 1995

Using Tree Regression To Identify Nutritional And Environmental Factors Affecting Sugarcane Production, Kenneth M. Portier, David L. Anderson

Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture

A prediction function is developed for sugarcane yield using preplant soil nutrition levels, cultivar, and soil type. A tree regression approach is used because the resulting function encompasses the complexity of response between yield, multiple nutrients and other factors, while handling large amounts of data and providing information useful in the development of fertilizer and other production recommendations. Data collected from 148 control plots of experiments performed on commercial fields in the Everglades Agricultural Area of Florida are used to illustrate the method.

Step-Stress Testing In Agricultijre, Imad H. Khamis, James J. Higgins Apr 1995

Step-Stress Testing In Agricultijre, Imad H. Khamis, James J. Higgins

Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture

Step-stress testing has been used for a munber years in engineering. An item is placed on test for a specified period of time. If it does not fail in that time, the stress is increased. This process is repeated for a specified number of stress levels until the item fails. In agriculture, animals or plants may be the test items and dosage of a chemical, amount of fertilizer, temperature, etc, the stress variable. In this paper we suggest several potential applications of step-stress testing in agriculture and present inferential procedures for observations that are distributed exponentially.

Two-Factor Agricultural Experiment With Repeated Measures On One Factor In A Complete Randomized Design, Armando Garsd, María Del C. Fabrizio, María V. López Apr 1995

Two-Factor Agricultural Experiment With Repeated Measures On One Factor In A Complete Randomized Design, Armando Garsd, María Del C. Fabrizio, María V. López

Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture

A typical agricultural experiment involves comparisons of several treatments at different points in time. The ensuing lack of independence between observations of the same experimental unit may then impair the attainment of statistical significance by the standard analysis of variance, and calls for the application of more powerful methods. This paper addresses one such method, the so-called two-factor experiment with repeated measures on one factor. We discuss the adequacy of this model in the context of three concrete examples drawn from agricultural experimentation.

Sequential Analysis Of Agricultural Experiments, Armando Garsd, María V. López, María Del C. Fabrizio Apr 1995

Sequential Analysis Of Agricultural Experiments, Armando Garsd, María V. López, María Del C. Fabrizio

Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture

Interim monitoring of accumulating data has been widely used in clinical trials, but it has not received the same attention in agricultural experimentation. The methodology, however, can be a useful tool in agronomic trials designed to find better production techniques or optimal animal treatments at low cost, plus the possible economic advantages resulting from correct early decisions. These sequential procedures for testing hypothesis with available data in successive periods of time dictate termination of the experiment when a significant difference is detected, or otherwise continuation of the experiment to the end of the stipulated time or until all the planned …

Spatial Analysis Of Grasshopper Density As Influenced By Anthropogenic Habitat Changes, Bahman Shafii, William J. Price, Dennis J. Fielding, Merlyn A. Brusven Apr 1995

Spatial Analysis Of Grasshopper Density As Influenced By Anthropogenic Habitat Changes, Bahman Shafii, William J. Price, Dennis J. Fielding, Merlyn A. Brusven

Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture

The rangeland environment in southern Idaho has been heavily impacted by human activities. Invasion by exotic plant species, frequent fires, grazing pressure, and other ecological disturbances have greatly affected the structure and dynamics of grasshopper populations. Quantification of spatial patterns of grasshopper density and species composition is important in order to determine their influence on grassland ecosystems, as well as evaluating managerial decisions concerning vegetation manipulations, grazing practices, and spraying programs. A spatial statistical approach to modeling the heterogeneity of grasshopper populations is presented, and the impact of vegetation and grazing treatments on grasshopper density is investigated. Empirical applications are …

A Classification Of Unreplicated Factorial Experiments For Use With The Analysis Of Deterministic Simulation Models, J L. Willers, B. T. Vinyard Apr 1995

A Classification Of Unreplicated Factorial Experiments For Use With The Analysis Of Deterministic Simulation Models, J L. Willers, B. T. Vinyard

Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture

Deterministic simulation models are important in agricultural applications and their use is becoming increasingly common. Therefore, statistical procedures that interpret the output and evaluate the performance of deterministic models are necessary. The fact that deterministic computer simulation experiments cannot be replicated provides opportunities for using several procedures applicable to unreplicated factorial experiments. We discuss a classification scheme that selects the correct technique for most deterministic simulation experiments. The value of these techniques is their capability to estimate the experimental error variance for unreplicated computer experiments. Using these estimates of error, model developers and practitioners can more thoroughly analyze their deterministic …

Estimation Of And Adjustment For Residual Effects In Dairy Feeding Experiments Utilizing Changeover Designs, Ramon C. Littell, Charles J. Wilcox, H. H. Van Horn, A. P. Tomlinson Apr 1995

Estimation Of And Adjustment For Residual Effects In Dairy Feeding Experiments Utilizing Changeover Designs, Ramon C. Littell, Charles J. Wilcox, H. H. Van Horn, A. P. Tomlinson

Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture

A procedure is presented which demonstrates estimation of and adjustment for residual effects in changeover designs. The method utilizes all data collected in an experiment by including treatments imposed on animals prior to initiation of data collection. Estimation is achieved via general linear models. An example is given of a nutrition experiment conducted with dairy cattle. Such analyses should increase efficacy of changeover designs and reduce concern by researchers about biased estimates of direct effects which could result from residual effects. Methods from popular computer programs for estimating direct effect treatment means are compared. Practical problems encountered in computing standard …

Issues In Analysis Of A Long-Term Integrated Pest Management Field Study, J. R. Alldredge, F. L. Young

Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture

A team of 14 scientists conducted a 6-year, 16-ha, integrated pest management field study in the dryland wheat production area of the Pacific Northwest. Objectives were to develop a profitable crop production system that controls weeds effectively and reduces soil erosion. Farm-size machinery was used to till, plant, and harvest crops grown in either a continuous wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) sequence or a 3-year crop rotation of winter wheat-spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) -spring pea (Pisum sativum L.) in conservation and conventional tillage systems. Main plot factor levels were two tillage systems and three …
